John 1:4 & 5

"In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome* it.

We should not be surprised or dismayed if unbelievers do not understand us. And no doubt and/or unbelief can overcome God's word. If we will stand on God's word alone, Satan can do nothing to overcome us.

Often, it seems as if we are not shining all that brightly. We need to remember first that if God says something, it is true no matter what. Those who are born again have Life and so they have the light. There may obstructions to the light. The sun still shines on the stormiest day, but clouds darken the sky. We may be clouded by unconfessed sin, or by unforgiveness. We come into the Christian life with many attitudes that need correcting and we know little of God's word or His ways. God will transform us as we ask Him to deliver us.

As we are cleansed from those things that hinder us (Hebrews 12:1),we will shine more brightly. We rarely see the change. Others will see. If someone says that you are different, be very careful. It is easy for pride to rise up and undo all the good work that God has done. Be quick to acknowledge that it is Jesus, not you.

Does it work? Yes. Some time ago, my wife and I went to a restaurant we've been to a few times. We were just being ourselves. The young waitress told us that we were to loveliest couple she had met. A waitress meets a lot of people. I immediately said that she was seeing Jesus, not me. We were the last customers and the kitchen was closed. We spent the next 20 minutes or so witnessing to the young woman. She had every excuse to leave us and start clearing tables. She was drawn to Jesus in us. If she knew me 20 years ago, she would have run and hid!

Let God change you and set you free from that which hides the Light of Christ that dwells in you now. It's peace and joy even when troubles come.

We may not think that we r shinning very bright but that's probably because we think we could always do better and we know it , however , we don't have to set the world on fire , maybe b just a speck of light in this dark world . Give someone a big smile , lend someone a hand , pass the time of day with a stranger , there r many ways we can show the love of God to others . I'm a bit shy and don't like to attract attention to myself but even I can find ways to b of use to others , just not in a very obvious way and that's fine by me . Sometimes it's easy for us Christians to forget just how far removed we r from the rest of the non Christian world but others c it in us . Give God the glory and your neighbours a smile 😁 .

If you hover over the hotlinks you can see that it is from the ESV.
I ahve no idea where the hotlinks are to hover over but thanks for the ESV answer.. I enguiored because KJV translation is very different..

(John 1:4-5) "In him was life; and the life was the light of men. {5} And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not."

(John 1:4-5) "In him was life; and the life was the light of men. {5} And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not."
“And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”
‭‭John‬ ‭3:19-21‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“he that doeth truth cometh to the light,”

“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
‭‭John‬ ‭8:31-32‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Hi Adstar-- when you use a scriptural reference, like John 3:13-15 for example, the Forum scripture tagger automatically turns your reference text blue and into a hyperlink. So now if you take your mouse cursor and move it over where it appears-- the whole verse pops up for convenience. It's an add-on feature that this site subscribes to.

That's interesting! On March 11 of this year, a change was introduced that converted normal verse citations to links. This is great for those who do not want to look up a verse, and I can understand that. But for me, it has messed up thousands of posts where I had the verse citation under a panel in text that I made the same colour as the board, making it essentially invisible, so something would show up in my post stream, as just an image shows nothing in the post stream except for the fact that a post was made. So not only has it messed up thousands of my posts, but now I also have to rewrite the text document where I keep a record of my urls. LOL.
