Yes, according to the Bible, Christians are encouraged—and even commanded—to gather together as a church. While salvation is through faith in Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8-9), being part of a church community is an essential part of Christian life. Here’s why:
1. Biblical Command to Gather
While gathering with other believers is necessary, the Bible does not say that church must happen in a specific building. The early Christians met in homes, public spaces, and synagogues. The key is to be regularly connected to a local group of believers where you can worship, learn, serve, and grow together.

- Acts 2:42-47 describes how the first Christians devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer.
- They met both in homes and in the temple courts (Acts 5:42), showing that regular gatherings were a fundamental part of Christian life.
- 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 – Paul describes believers as different parts of one body, each needing the others to function properly.
- Just as a physical body cannot function well if its parts are disconnected, a Christian cannot thrive in isolation.
- Church provides sound biblical teaching (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
- It allows believers to use their spiritual gifts to serve others (1 Peter 4:10).
- Leaders in the church are called to shepherd and equip believers (Ephesians 4:11-12).
- Matthew 16:18 – Jesus said, "I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it."
- If Jesus founded the church, then it is important to be part of it.
