Hey Everyone!

I was in a local store over a week ago and noticed... They're almost out of Valentine candy. :cry:

To which, I can only have this kind of reaction:

1738864960607.jpeg

Why?

Because when you're a single, the best thing to look forward to on Valentine's Day is all the half-price candy the next day! And it looks like this year, I'm going to be seriously missing out. :cry:

I've worked in several different stores over the years and unless it's changed, for smaller holidays like Valentine's and Easter, they'll get their entire shipment at once. Sometimes, this is enough to fill their designated space -- so once it's all out, there won't be anymore. Sometimes there might be extra in the back, and if it's a big holiday like Christmas or Halloween, they might get extra reinforcements, but not for Everyone's Favorite Day to Remind You That You Are Single (unless things have changed or it's different in other stores.)

Therefore, it looks like my chances of scoring reduced-priced goodies are literally flying right out the heart-shaped window!

I was seriously looking forward to:

1. Reese's Miniatures Peanut Butter Cups (but ONLY the miniatures!) They have JUST the right chocolate to PB ratio, unlike the other sizes/shapes.)

2. M&M's, peanut and plain, but I'll try almost any flavor.

3. Brach's cinnamon jelly hearts -- they're only available for V-day, and they MUST be Brach's! Any other brand is simply inferior and not worth the money, even at 1/2 price!!

Now of course -- I need candy like I need a hole in my head or a second butt (which all that candy just might give me.) But it's nice to look forward to SOMETHING on these Hallmark holidays, especially since I've been trying to limit myself to ONLY buying candy if it's on sale after a holiday.

How about you?

* Any favorites you're hoping to snag at a deal?

* The infamous heart boxes?

1738865473297.jpeg

* A new stuffed friend?

1738865583913.jpeg

* Housewares or decorations?

1738865754348.jpeg

* Jewelry, flowers, or candles?

1738865828123.jpeg

Personally, I wouldn't mind snagging some colorful 1/2 off kitchen towels and a new soap dispenser (and I'm sure it would be a lot better for me than any candy!)

* What about everyone else?

* Do you have something special in mind treat yourself with (if it's still there!!) the day after we're all Made Aware of How Single We Are?

(Married friends are welcome to answer too! Do you and your spouse get each other anything for the infamous V-Day?)

Back in the day they used to bring out some good chocolates for Valentine's. These days it's just the junk you can find any day of the year at the checkout, just in a different package.

Of course that might be because of where I live. Maybe in big cities they still bring out good stuff for Valentine's Day.

I've never really done Valentine's Day. When the kids were growing up I'd always score a bunch of deep discounted candy after each holiday... though if I had it to do all over again I wouldn't bring home nearly as much candy as I did back in those days.

Candy has gotten so expensive now that when they discount it 50% or more I still think it is overpriced... I've always had a hard time adjusting my thinking to inflation.

In our house we have a strong preference for quality candy. When I was a kid I would eat anything with sugar in it. Nowadays I'm pretty picky. My kids wouldn't eat Palmer's candy and I don't blame them... that stuff is bottom shelf. We love See's chocolates which we consider to be the best candies the world has to offer. I imagine in heaven there will be a See's dispensary near the Tree of Life that produces a different fruit each month. Rev 22:1-2 The fruit of the leaves will heal the nations while the See's Candy will console folks while they heal.

I have a good recipe for them brownies, if you want to try it. They come out more like the center of a pan of box mix brownies, not like the edges. So if you prefer the edges, don't try this recipe.

Want to try it?

Well I've got a coupon for a free box of cake mix at the store, I'm thinking if I bake the cake, then I can chop it up and layer it with some whipped cream frosting to make some parfaits or similar. Oh and I need to get the hearts out of the freezer ( I think I have both beef and pig hearts) because that's become my traditional valentines day meal if I have a heart to eat. If I don't have enough heart I might have to break out the cow tongue too to supply my food needs through the next week.

It would be a tough choice between peanut m&ms and Reese cups...

I'd probably get a little of both. ☕

Yes! Send me the recipe please
- 12 tablespoons butter. That's 1 and 1/4 sticks in the USA.
- 1 and 1/4 cups sugar.
- 3/4 cup cocoa powder. Except I just melted in some of my chocolate bars, because they are strong enough to use as baking chocolate. Also taste better.
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Except I used almond extract for an extra kick.
- 1/4 teaspoon salt.
- two large cold eggs. Emphasis on must be cold eggs.
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour. Not self-rising flour. The eggs do what little rising it requires.

Preheat oven to 325 Fahrenheit.

Melt butter in saucepan or microwave. Stir in chocolate, sugar and salt while it is still hot. If you're using chocolate bars like I did, melt them in with the butter. If you're using powdered cocoa, just stir it in after you melt the butter. Don't worry if it seems grainy. It will smooth out a lot after you add the rest of the stuff.

After it has cooled enough to be warm but not hot, mixed in the eggs and flour. Pour into greased pan and bake until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean.

I used no-bake chocolate cheesecake for the topping for these brownies. That's just cream cheese, whipping cream, powdered sugar and chocolate. There are specific proportions mentioned in the recipe, but you can mix them in just about any proportions depending on your taste. Whip it all up like you were making homemade whipped cream, pour it on top of the brownies and chill in the fridge.

Two 8 oz packages cream cheese
1 cup heavy whipping cream
3/4 cup powdered sugar
A chocolate bar melted into the heavy whipping cream

That's what I use, but again you can use more sugar or more whipping cream or less cocoa or whatever you want. It's not being baked so chemistry doesn't really matter much here.

I just ate what I think was a turkey heart and thought that it might be good for my heart health. Unless it's a gizzard, then it will be good for my gizzard.

Cow tongue?

I bet it likes chocolate too!

Your comment just reminded me of the meal of turkey, garlic and a hot pepper I just had. I opened the wrapper of giblets and wondered what the mystery meat was. Lol.

Mom took me to Yodars, an Amish store as a little boy and my uncle was a butcher for a&p, so I saw the display at his store. Yoder's had something strange. It was beef tongue.
I asked Mom about it and she told me what it was and asked if I wanted her to make it for me for dinner. It was kinda funny since it seemed like the only food that tastes too! 😄

Last summer I bought one and asked her to make it for us when I get her out of the hospital. That made her really happy. Unfortunately, someone else wouldn't allow that.
I will have to wait until I catch up with her on the other side. That's something I look forward to.

Not me! I asked for that last year, and this is what I got.

I still can't believe that she ate the waxed fruit on the living room table!

I haven't seen my cat in 12 months either.

Fluffy!

I miss you!

cinder brought cow tongue to a meetup. It was pretty good. She cooked it in a crock pot. Cut off the thick outer layer and it's just another chunk of meat.

Made good sandwiches too.

My blood sugar level rose 30 points just reading this.
