I thought this might be a good place to share my story. I usually hang out in Bible Discussions, and this story might qualify, but this forum probably has a wider audience.
My grandson, DL, was diagnosed with AML (Acutely Myeloid Leukemia) when he was three years old. He will turn 14 towards years end. When his pediatrician revealed her diagnosis she told my daughter to drive straight to Birmingham to Children's Hospital where a team of Doctors were waiting. She left my daughter in a small room to gather her thoughts before leaving. My grandson walked to a nearby table where a Gideons Bible lay and picked it up. He walked over to his mom, laid it in her lap, and said, “Mom, why are you crying, Jesus says it’s going to be ok.”
That began our journey with chemo treatments and hospital stays. After his initial treatments, he was in remission for 14 months before relapseing and enduring more chemo along with a bone marrow transplant. Once he recovered enough to mingle with the general public I asked him if he would be willing to share his story with a church that had him on their prayer list, that maybe some of the members would like to see and hear how God had answered their prayers.
We visited several churches and his story brought tears and hope to those who listened. Fast forward to about two weeks ago. DL still struggles with the aftereffects of his treatments and includes neuropathy and a less than perfect immune system. He has to have weekly subcutaneous injections of IGG in order to handle everyday germs and viruses. It used to involve monthly trips to the hospital for an hours long IV but his mom gives his shots at home every weekend. He called me recently and said, Remember how we visited those churches when I was younger and we talked about Jesus? I said, “Sure.” “I want you to find us a church so we can tell more people about Jesus and talk about how the Bible describes us as lambs and sheep.”
My cousin pastors a small rural church and I spoke to him about DL and I sharing a few words. He said sure, so yesterday we spoke before his church and DL shared several of his memories and I shared some thoughts on the 23rd Psalm and how it compares us to sheep and Jesus as our Shepard. After finishing and sharing hugs and greeting everyone, he turned and asked, “Do you know of any more churches we can go talk about Jesus?” I told him there were quite a few churches nearby that might allow him to share his story.
