My Bible Study has a “word of the year” tradition. Each member chooses a word to represent their focus for the coming year depending on their circumstances. It is often centered on our spiritual journey but it doesn’t necessarily have to be. I thought this might be a good conversation starter for this group.
Hope is my word of the year.
For me, 2024 was a year of transformation as I renewed my relationship with God, but also pain as I started the divorce process. 2025 will be a year of change as I become single, retire, move to a new community, and become a grandparent. As I enter 2025 I choose Hope!
The Hebrew word for Hope is “qawah” which translates as “to wait or look with eager expectation”. Hope includes confidence in a positive outcome. This is quite different than the English usage which implies a slimmer chance.
These are my favorite versus about hope:
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”
Romans 15:13 ESV
“Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”
Romans 12:12 ESV
How about you? Do you have a word of the year??
