Repentance is a way of life as Christians from my point of view. No matter how "well" I'm doing at living out and sharing the gospel, sin is at the core of my corrupt nature. When it comes to the surface, I need to immediately address it by asking for forgiveness and God's help to avoid giving in to the temptation (always easier said than done).
I like the verse quoted in the opening post of this forum:
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Peter reveals the compassionate nature of God, who wants everyone to repent and live the abundant life within His kingdom. Maybe I'm too much of an optimist in this area, but I believe most will eventually repent versus facing the alternative.
What's your take on the question,
"When do people truly repent of their sins, before or after truly believing in Jesus?"
For me, the repentance started after I truly believed in Jesus and accepted Him as my Lord and Savior. Like humility, repentance is a gift and Godly trait that can only come through the power of the Spirit:
Romans 2:4
New King James Version
4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?
I like how both Peter and Paul emphasize the "longsuffering" God has towards us, and His patience is immense given the rebellion we have exhibited as a race throughout the ages. It's God's goodness that leads me to repentance, not some feeble effort I make by my limited strength to address and overcome my sins.
I’m pretty much in agreement with you . I believe as we grow in our relationship with Jesus he reveals more light to us ( light bieng judgement and truth in the gospel ) …and as he does this more of the things we need to repent of “come to light “ and he never gives us more than we are capable of maintaining once we commit to him . He prepares us teaches us then our faith is tested until it’s refined in him and then we’re given more because we overcome that hurdle and we’re ready for the next bit always Jesus is there with us and has provided
doctrine for repentance confession and provision of remission of sins in his blood and in his name and by his word in the gospel
“If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”
1 John 1:6-10
i believe that when we’ve done wrong and realize we have consciously then it’s time to repent we should ask God for a sensitive conscience towards our own actions and then we’ll fell terrible when we’ve done something we know is wrong which , that’s godly sorrow that
brings repentance into salvation
i think sometimes we still fail and fall down after we convert and there is doctrine for us who do
Brother
this kind of thing is for people who understand they aren’t perfect but they believe with all thier heart in Jesus the Lord !
“For
if ye forgive men their trespasses,
your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
( this isn’t about the past he already died for sins but it’s doctrine for his disciples who are gonna still fall short sometimes )
but
if ye forgive not men their trespasses,
neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
Matthew 6:14-15 KJV
to me repentance also is tied to this law of mercy taught heavily in the gospel
“
Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
Judge not, and ye shall not be judged:
condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned:
forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall be given into your bosom. For
with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
…..And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not
the things which I say?”
Luke 6:36-38, 46 KJV
For me being judgemental and condemning others Constantly eyeing for everyone else’s sin and flaw is actually something that’s extremely important for us to repent of
most of us aren’t killers and thieves and adulterers but we still do a lot wrong towards others in action and also in thought and intent which when we receive the holy spirit in us becomes important what we think about and dwell On I mean ….we’ve become Gods temple for his spirit
sorry to ramble on there I agree with you it’s a process and no one’s perfect yet we still have the capacity to sin but also many of us are sinning in some way and don’t even realize it yet because …..we haven’t heard the stuff that makes us grow up and mature in our understanding of Jesus and his kingdom
