I heard a story last night that made me ask myself the question in the thread. It came out of nowhere. Hubby and I were watching a video about visiting the Titanic museum in TN.It is of interest to me because the disaster happened close to where I grew up and I've heard the story often. But at the very end of the video one of the folk that works there told this amazing story. I haven't really looked into it yet but it made me think deeply on this question of assurance.

Apparently there was a particular minister on the ship. He was heading to preach at Moody's church in America. When he realized the great ship was going down he began calling out " Women, children and the unsaved, get in the lifeboats"!! He passed a man without a life vest and asked him if he was saved. When the man said he wasn't, he gave him his life vest and said " I don't need this, I'm not going down, I'm going up!" The pastor grabbed something to hold on to and he floated past a man he shouted to him " Are you saved?!" the man said that he wasn't. The pastor said "Believe on Jesus!". Some time later the pastor passed the man again and shouted " Are you saved yet?!!" The man said no, that he didn't think he was. The pastor said " Believe on the Lord and you will be saved!!" That was the last time the man saw the preacher, but he said he did indeed become saved that night. What a testimony! What an assurance! The preacher still had souls on his mind up till his last breath. The question is, are you as assured of your own salvation?

That is an amazing story of much faith! 😊

11And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

I'm promised eternal life because I have the Son of God. I believe on Him, not on my works like obeying the laws aka turning from sins, water baptism or dedicating my life to the Lord.

I heard a preacher say the same thing about an encounter he had out evangelizing one day...
Are you saved?
You betcha.
How do you know?
I was there when it happened.

Re "The question is, are you as assured of your own salvation?": Is this question the same as "Are you sure you accept Christ Jesus as Lord?" Can one be 57% sure he accepts Christ? Is it not a binary decision?
this is what you call, "paralysis by analysis"! (too much questioning & thinking). no, you cannot be 57% sure & you can not be 99.99% sure you believe in God, Jesus & the Holy Spirit. can someone righteously believe red is really half blue or can someone rightfully believe snow is actually sand? look at James 2:10, Deuteronomy 6:5 & Jeremiah 29:11-13.

100% assured because of His grace and power. He showed me I am saved by resurrecting my dead spirit and reconciling it with His Spirit, forever removing the veil and opening my eyes and leading me to all truth by His power for His glory. This is being born again and it is AMAZING!!! Praise Jesus name forever for His mercy and power. Man I LOVE God!!!!!!!

By God Father of Son Jesus as risen For us to be new in Father's Spirit and Truth instantly given this from Father for us by Son to us all to believe he is risen for us and we get a pass into Heaven to us to live forever whenever we die physically here on earth. (Might want to reckon self already as dead Romans 6:12?)
What???????????????? many might say, okay and not care, I say go on with your bad self, and act like you do not sin still care here on earth selfishly, do not admit to God from within you, or anyone else, no matter God still continues to love us all anyways, wants the best for each person forever, especially to not harm any others anymore as have, at least I know I have. Time to respond and stop creating your own ways from scriptures, to be anybody better than others and be rewarded by others as if you are better than others, not good for me in my soul.
God says. God has accepted you in Son's death for you, Reconciled (Forgiven) you on that cross for you all in the last shedding of blood forever it is done, not just a few as religions teach. therefore if you ever decide to believe God between God and you personally, God then seals you to learn how to be new and leave all that junk you have gotten messed up on, from this worlds evil, it will be put behind you growing new one day at a time from God's love and mercy for you too, done in Son for all
Ephesians 1:6
to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
Ephesians 1:7
in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Ephesians 4:32
and be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
Ephesians 1:13
in whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Ephesians 4:30
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

Just love as God does love us all, see it done for you by Son on that cross who went willingly for us all to believe it or not, consciously (I call that "The Art Of Fighting without Fighting")
John 6:27
Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

For you all y'all And to see God's love as in 1 Cor 13:4-7 has no law against that Love to get given us to be new, by belief to this truth he is risen and lives for us to rest in Thanksgiving and praise to this does work of Son for us
Wow to see Psdalm 103:12 fulfilled today in the risen Son after the death took away sin for us to be with Father and Son, woe is me

John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Believe God in risen Son Jesus, receive truth from God, not self or anyone else, please to stay free in God's love once done for us all (1 John 2:1-12)

Then see truth God goes just love us all as we are. We get to change willingly in love as the response to God's Love first given us all by Son for us all, doing this willingly not forcefully or manipulatively as I have seen done by others to get something they want, not really caring for others, only acting and do, these just want to feed their belly using scriptures to do that. Not good for my Soul
He, Jesus went willingly to death for us all willingly to save us all in his risen life for us all, desiring no one to die, Left us to either believe this or not in his Son Jesus as risen for us to be new in love and mercy to all, not a few all
That be what I hear Father telling us all, I love you all, will you see that and return this same love to all?
From the new Heart Daddy gives you
Ezekiel 36:26
A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

Believe God, receive new from God risen Son and be new, willingly daily to grow mature being willing to learn from any mistakes made after you believe God and you will learn new in love to all if have not already
Love from God Father in risen Son to all

John speaks of that boldness your referring to in in the day of judgment in verse 17. That great confidence he explains is the love in us. God is love. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1 John 4&version=KJV

Ok, then lets ask, how can you know that you know, be assured of your salvation as the preacher in the story was?
It doesn't matter, because the preacher was saved by faith and not by working up assurance.

Now I WILL admit that I am an introvert, so I was not comfortable witnessing for Christ until I learned enough of GW to give me enough confidence that I knew why I believed what I believed to overcome my shyness. :^)

I felt that way too. Even though I was in ministry, I had a hard time one on one. Then one day the Holy Spirit just clicked in me. People know I will pray anywhere, any time for any thing. I have a girlfriend that continues to choose a bad path in life in spite of having a soft heart to the Gospel. She stopped me one day in the grocery store and started to tell me about all her issues. I said something like "Well you know what the answer is for all your troubles". She looked at my husband and said " Oh no, she's going to do it right here". I put my hands on her right there in the food aisle and prayed over her. She was crying and I encouraged her again to get back to serving the Lord.

I don't think the point is working up assurance. Like an old preacher friend of mine use to say "You can know that you know, you are saved". That is assurance, the knowing that you are saved.

can someone righteously believe red is really half blue
Ack, no! Red and blue make purple. Red is half yellow and half magenta. Magenta does have blue in it but the yellow cancels that out.

Although in the photo industry we normally say magenta instead of purple... :D

Where false assurance exist, true assurance cannot.

Anyone can claim assurance but no one can prove it.

This verse certainly does prove that the body of Christians are assured of eternal life.

This verse does not offer assurance that an individual is part of this body. That assurance is a assumption. It may be a fair assumption but a assumption never the less.

Yes, assurance is better, (but mere belief is sufficient to get salvation started :^)
