Hello everyone,
Being Canadian, we celebrate the man-made holiday of Thanksgiving, same as the US, except on a different date.
Are any of you from another country that also celebrates this holiday? If so, what are the traditions, ie. turkey?
I believe Germany celebrates a "harvest festival of thanks".
Also, as a single person, I understand that sometimes holidays are difficult and lonely for some.
I am fortunate and grateful to have family, and great friends but some are widowed, estranged from family members or esp after divorces, or have moved to new locations without family and friends. What are some suggestions you can share with the rest of us re: ideas to help others survive the holiday blues.
Here are some of mine:
- find a church and get connected with people/new friends (make an effort)
- find an outreach/volunteer service in your community during the holidays & pour yourself into the lives of others/others less fortunate (perspective is a great distraction from self) ie. soup kitchen
- go deep into researching a topic/information that you've always wanted answers to (rabbit holes allowed)
- get to know some of your neighbours or elderly on your block who are usually alone and lonely during holidays and plan on a visit with them
- plan to do something fun and exciting, just by yourself ie. movie/book binge, go on a mini holiday/road trip, decorate your place just for you, work on a project/hobby you have been eager to start/complete, make it a self-care/rejuvenation time
- go on a mission trip
