I listen to alternative pop/rock/metal. God only knows is one of my favorites. it descries how I feel perfectly. every word resonates.
goodness of God is my favorite song. it was partially this song that led me to be forgiven. 'all my life you have been faithful, all my life you have been so, so good,' and, he has. I just did not care or know. some of the mettallica songs are not bad either. metal is awful, but alt metal is not.
the unforgiven, enter sandman, a couple others. I really enjoy imagine dragons' 'Ready, Aim, Fire,' from iron man 3.

Not a big fan of most rock. Less of a fan of pop, especially current. Been a metal head for 30 years now. Though alt metal is not one I'm big into. I have 1000s of metal albums.
But I like other stuff as well. I sometimes go through phases were I get really into other styles I like. Other stuff I am/have been into are things like rockabilly, punk, hardcore, electronic music, movie scores, 90s Ska, swing, rap, reggae. I'm sure I could add more if I thought about it. No country though. One genre I can't get into (apart from a few older songs).

and how about enter sandman by metallica? It is more rock than metal.
Well Metallica is now and has always been classified as metal. And one of the most influential metal bands ever.
The Black album had some good songs on it. Though not a fan of Enter Sandman. Could be because I grew up more familiar with their older music. Their thrash days. When they hopped genres to do something more mainstream accessible they got a lot of backlash from their old fans. I felt a negative when Enter Sandman came out, for the same reasons others did.
Eventually I got over it and enjoy the Black album now. Though perhaps my initial dislike of the change stuck with me.
Sad But True and Nothing Else Matters were my favorites. But anything after that album I lost all interest. I tried their Death Magnetic album, it's not bad but it didn't really grab me.

You may dig Skillet. Not really my thing but they're quite popular. Lacey Sturm. And also Flyleaf, Lacey Sturms old band. Their earlier stuff was best, to me. When she quit I lost interest.
Project 86 would be considered alt metal, though perhaps too heavy for you.
Off the top of my head that's all I can think of to recommend.

oh yeah. I like enter sandman, the unforgiven, because they are softer, not so metallic.
