Come Along as The Singles Forum Hosts an Ice Cream Social! (All Are Welcome!)

Hey Everyone,

Every now and then, I'll see an advertisement for an old-fashioned "Ice Cream Social," and it brings back memories of my childhood church.

It got me thinking I thought, "Why not bring all the fun and flavors of an Ice Cream Social right here to the Singles Forum?"

And so, with that in mind, we need to know everyone's thoughts in deciding all the crucial details, such as:

1. Will servers be required to wear uniforms?




2. What varieties of ice cream should be served?

A. Hard-Pack, Hand-Scooped:



B. Soft Serve:



Or,

C. Ice Cream Bars?



3. What flavors would you like to see served? For our married friends, do you and your spouse like the same flavors, or have very different preferences?



And finally:

4. Does anyone have any memories of an ice cream truck (with its soulful siren song blaring) in your neighborhood, and did your family ever use to buy from them? Any stories of begging your parents, and maybe now you're the parent and the kids are begging you?

If we're having a social, I say make it old school...

If anyone wants to add ice cream add ons, bring what you want and enough to share...

If we go with store bought, I want some blue bell vanilla with some chocolate shell.

Mr. Rodney, I might be way off here, but...

You usually don't say much (which is a shame, boo!) and I can certainly understand if that's you're style...

But I can't help noticing that you've piped up a bit more as more threads about food have popped up in the forum.

Is it just me, or is this a bit of a coincidence???

May we also have frozen yogurts served? Please, please, pretty please?

The cherry pieces are full halves of black cherries. Oh my.

I'm with Rodney. Mostly to get a burger... He said everything I would have said, so there is nothing left for me to say.

Servers wear uniforms in ice cream parlors or restaurants, at socials they're just regular folks and the only uniform they have is a t-shirt that says ask me for ice cream or something like that, maybe just a little pin on name tag that says that since we care far more about the ice cream than the server's name.

A proper ice cream social is hand scooped with lots of add your own toppings. Bonus points if you can get people to make homemade ice cream for the social. Now if it's just a gathering like a singles picnic that you want to include ice cream in, then ice cream bars (and sundae cones) in a cooler full of dry ice is an acceptable option. And I did buy that whipped cream maker I was talking about so I can bring that with extra cream (and chargers) as my donation to the toppings.

All of those flavors are good except for the mint chocolate chip, but with an adequate toppings bar all you really need are vanilla and chocolate (if you wanna get really fancy add strawberry in there too).

The ice cream truck played pop goes the weasel and we did buy from it sometimes, but we had to use our own money, no getting extra from mom. They had ninja turtle bars something with chewing gum eyes so after you finished your ice cream you had a treat that lasted. And the ice cream truck was where I discovered how wonderful dreamcicles were.

Suggestions for other treats are certainly welcome!

I had wanted to mention some non-dairy treats for any friends who are allergic to dairy or have other preferences, but the original post was getting a bit long.

So much for an Ice Cream Social.

It's sounding more like we are turning this into an All-You-Can-Eat Dessert Buffet.

I remember the icecream truck, the Helm's bakery truck, the fuller brush man, and the milkman. I'm sure I've forgotten a few others. Honorable mention goes out to the mailman... who still has a job.

My near-by Alano Club (or an AA meeting associated with it) used to have ice-cream socials.

I say associated with without meaning it in the usual fashion, for Alano Clubs exist to support Alcoholic Anonymous in its recovery endeavours, and AA itself and all meetings, under the traditions set in place to protect their autonomy, has/have adopted a policy of “cooperation but not affiliation” with other organizations concerned with the problem of alcoholism. Tradition 6 in particular deals with this: An A.A. group ought never endorse, finance or lend the A.A. name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property and prestige divert us from our primary purpose. I wonder if there is a 12 step program for ice cream addicts .

There very well may be!!!

The 12 steps as originally laid out by Bill and Bob have been modified to help people in
hundreds and hundreds of different fellowships dealing with myriad life-challenging issues.

I'm siding with the ice cream maker. It reminds me of growing up in the country. I'd pick blackberries, and on the 4th of July my grandmother would make a blackberry cobbler and my uncle would make homemade vanilla ice cream. My grandmother would also grill burgers. Unfortunately, my fool self would eat too much and I'd have to spend the rest of the day in the lounge chair. I never learned though

As far as getting ice cream from the store, I am very fond of Braum's eggnog ice cream. It's incredible. I order 2 scoops in a waffle cone. Their cappuccino chunky chocolate is good too.

Also, if I may mention, I am very fond of frozen custard. I used to live near a locally owned frozen custard place...and let's just say it's a good thing I don't live near there anymore!

Btw, I still hear the ice cream truck. One just went by here the other day!

Green tea ice cream?

I have never heard of such, but I imagine it would be good.

And what's wrong with that? You say that like it's a BAD thing...


I made a batch of peach pudding the other day and somebody said it was like a dreamsicle. Okay, close enough.

I think it is a specialty at Asian restaurants, mostly .

And it is tasty!

Haagen Dazs has a version:



It was a little jarring at first -- tastes like grass clippings at first -- but... after the second carton, I kind of liked it.

Given the size of the cartons, I imagine it takes two or three of them before you get your serving's worth.
