And here's the question of the day. What does it mean to believe on/have faith in Jesus? Is it believing he existed? All we have to do is believe he died for our sins? Or is there more to our faith in him than believing the things he did?
Hi, CC. As Christians, I believe there are a lot of things about which we can have faith in Jesus. For instance, God has bestowed countless promises upon His children, the believers and followers of Christ. We can therefore have faith that we can trust Him because He will always be faithful in keeping every promise He has ever given to us. He is not going to break any of them. For example, God promises He will never leave us nor forsake us. He promises that surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives. —Selah

Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, and in which you stand firm. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures
(1 Cor 15:1-4)

the Gospel is of first importance. we stand firm in the Gospel.

Can a once truly saved believer backslide too much and lose the gift of salvation? If so do they need to repent and ask for forgiveness through Christ again? Thoughts are welcome and scripture too!
i believe you said you were attending a church this morning. i beseech you, ask your question of the elders there.

this website, while it can be a good tool, is not the place for this, IMO. please seek guidance from Godly men in person. may our Lord bless you.

NO, NO, NO!!! never happened, will not happen now & never will happen!!! it is impossible to be saved & then lose your salvation. if someone thinks you can lose salvation, YOU WERE NEVER SAVED IN THE 1ST PLACE. look at the expression; "born again". AGAIN! that means you were born once, (physically), & now reborn again, spiritually! study John 3:5 & Romans 12:2! when born again, you will want to think, speak & act like Jesus, PERMANENTLY!!!!!!!! yes, you can backslide for a myriad of reasons but your new reformation or regeneration of spirit, soul, conscious & mind will tell you, "stop doing that"! & you will obey your mind's thoughts on correction.

S

If, I have to repent again, ask for more forgiveness given by God through Son's done work on that cross over 2,000 years ago now. Then I might not understand what is done for me by Son, Jesus about what is new in his risen Life. Without finalizing one is forgiven by God to them and for them on that final sacrifice of that cross in the last shedding of blood for it, how will anyone see new life given them from God Father to them?
What, I hear you, think on it, John 19:30 what got finished?
How many sins, errors, did he go to that cross for, how many, are taken away then and there, in his Father's view for us? Is it finished or not?
Are we forgiven by this done work or not?
We are reconciled according to 2 Cor 5:17-20

2 Corinthians 5:17-20

King James Version

17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

Okay, there I did it again, what I do not ever want to sin again and yet have anyways. in belief see (Romans 7) read 6-8 of Romans in context
God replies you are forgiven by me in my Son for you on that cross, it is finished done, you are reconciled! (2 Cor 12:7-10)

Man, says, No! you got to get it right and repent again, you not saved, because, you sinned again, as those saying this are in sin still too! yet will not tell you, and are doing their best to control you and others too, such is religion.
You better or else get it right, repent and do it no more, or God is going to get you, is the belief's of people all over the world, not understanding what Grace from God is for?

What, then is it Lord I need? Since you have forgiven me by Son for me and all others as well? (1 John 2:1-4)
God says in Spirit and Truth to you within you, The Holy Spirit of promise, You need Life, from death. You, and all are first born as dead to me in the first birth, here on earth of man and woman having sex. We, as I see it now, need God to give us all new life more abundantly. (John 10:10) the first part is emotion(s) leading people into worry. The Last part of that verse is, new life offered to us in his risen life presently and forever. In, the risen Life of Son for us. To, understand this truth for you to walk new and love all in mercy and truth, doing the same work of my Son Jesus that is now done forever in my love and mercy for you through Son to you, He, Son, Jesus did it for you already on that cross for everyone to turn to me in belief, I Love you. That is deep, wide and high y'all and truth beyond measure the only God reveals to each.
There is no more need for repentance, once one has turned to God in belief to God over Son as risen for them too. There is need to learn what is new given you.

Ephesians 1:13

King James Version

13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

Ephesians 1:6

King James Version

6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

Ephesians 1:7

King James Version

7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Wow, is this good news?

Now, carry on in belief to this new you, given you from God to you, on the very first day you decided to believe God, you will learn more and more daily in this done work of Son for you, carry on my wayward child, there will be peace when you are done.

Philippians 1:6

King James Version

6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

Amazing Grace, I had nothing to do with this gift, only to be given it from God who seriously loves us all, y'all

So, I'm saved. That means I can live as I wish and not worry if what I do is contrary to Gods Word. I do not have to worry about obeying God/Jesus, because I'm saved.

Hey, that's good to know!
No. It means “gird up your loins with truth” and begin seeking God to have and impact on your circle of influence.

I don't want to discuss this poster's business, because I don't know him and it's certainly not my place.

But if anyone has the chance, I would encourage them to read this person's other posts. He's in a state of great distress, and is in the middle of very unhealthy choices he's asking God for help with, but can't seem to pull himself away from either.

After reading his posts, I can see why he's asking this.

I believe he sees himself in a backslidden state (his posts explain why,) and he is wondering if he is still saved.

Any thoughts from others who have also read his posts? I'd be very interested in the answers, as I seem to run into a lot of people in similar circumstances.

I'm going to answer this in the simplest way I can think of. Yes, it IS possible to lose salvation.

KJV Galatians 5:19-22
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Revelations also shines a similar light on the subject.

KJV Revelations 21:8
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

So correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me like losing salvation IS possible, if you fall under any of these categories. And yes, repenting and asking for forgiveness is ALWAYS a good idea.
We all are first born under those categories mentioned from you above in scripture.
The first birth in the flesh is as dead to God as the first Adam was in "unbelief to God, when he ate, death spread to all.
Romans 8:3 no flesh will please God, Son is the only one, why? He was not first born of man, woman yes, but not man.
Be born new by God in God's done work of Son for us all is the call. Believe, receive and see. We as flesh cannot be perfect, even in trying to be, none can, proven in the First Testament of the first chosen
Therefore Christ came to die in our deserved place of death to give us new life in his risen Life, for all that will stand inn beleif to this truth will see this truth, and quit those things you mentioned to not do, over time in continuing to believe God over mankind's interpretations of, selfishly for self gain. Read the word for you, with the only purpose to know God, for us to stand in belief, it is done finished as said it is by Son in John 19:30 for new life to take over in his risen life. through, for us to walk new and not be in pride at all over it. Now alive to God, and you will get surprised a lot. I know I have and am in wow, wow as inn Isaiah 6:1-7 tells me of what is to get done in us by Son for us and is now done for us by Son on that cross to us all

Once born new by God to you personally from God, no one can turn that around ever. Thanking God all in all for doing what no other could or can do, thank you hope you get this new birth revealed to you too from God Father be the only way I see it to be truly born again by God as in John 3:1-6

I love that you have a heart for people struggling with this issue, Magenta.

Besides that, there is another important detail concerning his living conditions that I believe he's only mentioned in one of his posts, and it definitely needs to be changed, with the help of the Lord.

Yes. If not, then much of scripture needs to be explained away, imo

Hebrews 6:3–8 (ESV): 3 And this we will do if God permits. 4 For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. 7 For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. 8 But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned.

Hebrews 10:26–31 (ESV): 26 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Galatians 4:8–11 (ESV): Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. 9 But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more? 10 You observe days and months and seasons and years! 11 I am afraid I may have labored over you in vain.

Revelation 2:5–7 (ESV): 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. 6 Yet this you have: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. 7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.’

Revelation 2:10–11 (ESV): Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life. 11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.’

Revelation 2:15–17 (ESV): 15 So also you have some who hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans. 16 Therefore repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth. 17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.’

Revelation 2:25–29 (ESV): Only hold fast what you have until I come. 26 The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, 27 and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. 28 And I will give him the morning star. 29 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

Revelation 3:4–6 (ESV): Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. 5 The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels. 6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

Revelation 3:11–13 (ESV): 1 I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown. 12 The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name. 13 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

Revelation 3:15–22 (ESV): 15 “ ‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 17 For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see. 19 Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. 21 The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’ ”

It seems clear that there is a real danger is not maintaining faith to the end. The idea of “saving faith” is found nowhere in the Bible. There is faith that endures to the end and faith that fails. Faith that doesn’t endure does not result in salvation.
There is new life offered in the risen Christ, the death had to take away all sin first (John 1:29) it is now finished (John 19:30) for new life to begin in us the kids. by belief to Christ as risen for us. Then the new life begins and the Old waxes away over time in not quitting trust to God,
Eph 1:6.7.13, Phil 1:6
sealed by God to see truth over error
One in belief, leaves sin in the dirt, seeing truth of God for them. One then, leaves the errors of this world happening from religion behind them. Ever since the original temple was sacked, not one stone left upon another in AD 70. Evil has taken up the cross to get others under them to lead them. When The risen Jesus is the only mediator between God and man.
Thanksgiving and praise to God over Son taking all sin away for us as far as the east is from the west. For us to finalize it as reconciled forgiven by God through Son to now be born new by God in risen Son, thank you

"Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." 2 Tim 3:7

If one claims that a person is saved by faith, then if one loses their faith then without faith then they couldn't be saved, correct?

And if they could be saved without faith, then obviously faith would not be required to be saved?

"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. " John 8:32
Thanks, I get it
Beleive, receive and see eventually in not quitting belief

I cant find anything that says you can repent and be forgiven if you are willing. The closest thing to being beyond repentance is Hebrews 6:4, and Is kinda awkward translation wise, the way I see it is you can't start all over again afresh per say, but you will suffer losses, and the more time you waste sinning the less you're going to be worth in the end. Understand that verse was written to get people to move beyond the basics and mature as Christians, a problem with witch I still suffer.
A fact, I see to read and re read Hebrews 5:12-Chapter 6

This discussion has been going on on CC forever... Once saved, always saved. I have thought on it. And then. Define saved.

Here is my reasoning: Judas followed Christ and accepted him as Lord. He left everything behind to follow his master. That would be a good definition on saved, wouldn't it. But alas, we know what happened. His betrayal was predestined and he was damned. So I think we all can backslide and loose salvation. But we serve a God that is merciful and full of grace, and fortunately we can repent and be let into His grace again. But once saved, always saved is too easy. Salvation comes with a commitment and has to be followed up with actions and proven by the fruit.

I am not a theologian, and I know greater minds than mine have come to a different conclusion.

Hey, that's good to know!
Are you talking of the Corrinthians, that Paul addressed his letters to them to sort out there misunderstanding of this grace given them? Talking about this error of Evil given them from Evil. Still in need for new life until repented to God personally for the new life in the risen Christ to take over willingly from them, making the decision to believe God only
Why would anyone do that, live in fear or as they decide to live over others, if are born new by God in risen Son, I see to not or even comp template it.
They got the thought, hey I am forvgiven by God wow, lets go over there and take those women for ourselves, drink up all the wine and eat the food without thought of those in need at all, since we are forgiven. That is what they did, not understanding the truth of being forgiven by God. we can do that too yes, attitudes of the first born nature still in them not yet born new by God for them in risen Son Jesus to them. Yet saw this truth to them in the letters from Paul, their mistakes and repented to God personally in sorrow, a contrite heart as said in 2 Cor 7. that Paul got the report of this true repentance.

And here's the question of the day. What does it mean to believe on/have faith in Jesus? Is it believing he existed? All we have to do is believe he died for our sins? Or is there more to our faith in him than believing the things he did?
He is risen, where new life is given to us from Father of the risen Son to us. We are first born dead in need of new life, God is the one and only one that gives it. So believe Col 1:21-23, read it from verse 1 then Col 2 in the resurrected Christ, thank you
