hey, friends, i'm soliciting your thoughts on this sandwich. do you like it, and how do you like it?

what kind of bread, and what kind of cheese? do you add other things, like a tomato slice, or ham, or bacon? hot peppers or other veggies?

when i was a kid, mom always gave us grilled cheese and tomato soup. we dropped popcorn in the soup, just a few kernels at a time so it didn't get soggy.

in my husband's family they ate tomato soup with a tuna salad sandwich. apparently, they're barbarians. :D

please share your experiences.

We have grilled cheese with tomato soup too. Those who mix a tuna salad sandwich with tomato soup are definitely barbarians! I like grilled cheese best on sourdough bread. Sometimes just cheese, sometimes cheese and bacon or ham, and thin slices of tomato.

Some people down here in the South put diced tomatoes in their tuna sandwich. Does that count as barbarism? Does it have to cross a certain tomato percentage before they can be considered barbarians? Or does the tomato have to be liquid soup? Can it be solid tomatoes and still not be barbaric?

Alligator stew with a spicy tomato sauce. But no farm gators. They have to be wrestled out of the bayous.

My late dad and my late husband were experts in alligator hunting.

I put tomato in tuna salad sandwiches, but I also put chopped green olives and shopped pickle. Not to smother the tuna salad with any of the added ingredients, just a morsel here and there, delicious.

haven't made grilled cheese in quite awhile not even popcorn lol I live in an apartment now so nervous to try anything that might burn😅
but, I remember how I liked it...
butter to go on the sides of the bread and not too soaked otherwise it gets too slippery😁😅,I have tried the tomato soup and tomato chunks but, honestly for me it doesn't add flavor really, though vegetable soup can be a nice addition😯👍
or of course if for breakfast bacon is welcome and makes it more of a meal😋👍

honestly never heard of that combo until this thread lol😁, me I like tomoatoes especially cherry tomatoes but, Tuna eh no I don't think I have ever even had the nerve to try it smells too much like cat food🥴,I mean granted fish and tomatoes are supposed to be healthy but, together sounds more like smothering good tomatoes to me😅

For our sons birthday my husband took him to dinner and a movie at the theater.
They came home raving about the "deluxe grilled cheese" they enjoyed there.
When hubs took our other son for his birthday they came home disappointed as it was nothing like what dad and first son had- and for $13 each (about 3 years ago) hubby said "never again!"
With that, I took what I found on the description for the theaters menu and recreated it- which hubs and the boys raved as being 100x's better :giggle:

deluxe-grilled-cheese-910cal-680x680.jpg <---------from the theaters listing and description:
American, cheddar and pepper jack cheese, tomato and applewood-smoked bacon on Texas toast.Served with French fries.

How I made it (sorry  photos):

Butter BOTH sides of the 2 slices of Texas toast and lightly grill one side, remove from pan, grilled side up. Turn the heat very low.
Layer the cheese on the grilled side of both slices.
Place 1 slice of bread butter side down in the pan (cheese side up).
Layer on the bacon and tomato (if using tomato) and more bacon.
Top with the other slice of bread, (cheese on top of bacon,) butter side up.
Turn heat back up (medium- med/low usually is best at this point) and slowly grill till cheese is nice and melty and desired grilled crispiness is met.
Carefully flip the sandwich and repeat the grilling on the other side.
Remove from the pan, cut in half diagonally, enjoy!

Warning @fizzyjoe : this method is a little more buttery/slippery than normal (but ohhhhhh soooo goooooooood)

that doesn't sound like a snack, sounds like a long on going process😅,I mean I never tried gator meat myself but, I know cooking them in any form has to take hours by then might as well have something else😅👍

For a grilled cheese sandwich, thickly sliced sour dough bread is best, and I would never use pre-sliced cheddar or
whatever that orange sliced cheese is. Real cheddar or Havarti alone, or a mixture of cheddar and Havarti, or gouda,
enough that it oozes from the sides of the well-grilled bread. The only other thing added would be ketchup.
Yes, my dear mother served grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup. Never tuna and tomato soup
.:D
My mother's tuna specialty was a stove-top concoction made with rice and peas. Or maybe a casserole...

To make this breakfasty I have tried adding an egg patty- but it sort of messed with the yumminess of this, so I changed it up a little.

For breakfast grilled sandwiches I will do the same thing with buttering both sides, grilling one side.
Place choice(s) of cheese on each grilled side.
I make a scrambled egg patty (by cracking 1-2 eggs in a bowl and whisking together with a little milk and seasonings).
Pour into hot pan and cook, forming/folding into a patty. Set aside.
Grill both sides of ham slice.
Layer egg and ham on one slice of the cheese bread.
Top with second slice (buttered side up).
Grill sandwich until desired doneness.

Well, then you’re in for a treat when you find the time to make it. Just remember some Bayou wine to wash it down with lol.

Yeah, I don’t get why no one is asking for my alligator stew recipe lol.
Are you the one now, who must wrestle these alligators out of the bayous, so you can stew them? .
