You walked away from all you knew,
So strong and proud and eager to begin,
But you were soon broken, caught in the foul,
Of deceit, broken dreams, and sin.
It clung to your arms and weighted your legs,
Every movement hampered and heavy,
You struggle to gain your feet, at last
To stand, shaky and unsteady.
You tried one step away from the mire,
Raising your hands in a plea,
And turning your eyes in desperation,
In your pain you glanced to me.
Do you know my joy when you refuse to quit,
When you thought you had no hope for your soul,
But all the universe quivers and shakes,
When creation struggles to reach its goal.
With every effort you make I rejoice,
When you resist, my joy shakes the stars.
Your own cuts and bruises now honorably won,
Bring glory to all my own scars.
No matter how many the times you fall,
The world remains stronger, for now it must be.
But you will have one victory more than defeat,
When at last I bring you home to me.
Feeling lost and defeated, unable to dream,
At end you stand trembling and alone
Aware that all is now plain and exposed,
More naked than you have ever known
You’re missing some teeth and your hair,
Now hangs in clumps and strays;
My temple looks weary from time and abuse,
Saggysoft, floppy and grayed.
I see scars all about, some old and some new,
From sharp tools and from guns and from cold,
What was firm is now lumpy; the clear is now blurred;
And your walk not haughty and bold.
But I know you cannot yet, in truth realize,
What I feel when looking at you.
I will hug you and hold you with tears in my eyes
For behold; I make everything new.
So strong and proud and eager to begin,
But you were soon broken, caught in the foul,
Of deceit, broken dreams, and sin.
