It is not our place to judge the motives of people for dressing the way they do. It is our place to let them know of the negative effect it has on other people outside a church filled with dressed up people who might consider entering but don't like to dress up or are not able to dress up. A perfect example is a homeless person (and there are many) or even an illegal immigrant (and there are many) walking by a church wanting to go into the church building to hear the word of God but will not enter because they are not dressed properly. It's a question of what is important to people, looks or the heart. God judges the heart, not the looks.
If a homeless person or illegal immigrant wants to fellowship and hear God's word they shouldn't have any problem finding a group that looks like them, if that's what they need.

I contend that wearing our Sunday best clothes for church deters people who can't afford such clothing from going to church because they are not properly dressed. The comment that I hear is that it is a sign of respect when you are dressed in your best. Respect for who? Does God care how you are dressed? What is your opinion?
Personally, I would dress up a bit it is a special day to honour GOD.

So if you are having fellowship with God at home do you first go and put on your suit before you begin?
What a silly response. Comparing apples anf oranges. So when you go to work (outside your home), do you wear your pajamas?

Well now that depends. I work in a school and when it is Children In Need all staff have to wear their PJ's 😁

Christians should dress appropriately for a public occasion.

Showing up in beach wear like flip flops, shorts, short shorts, tube tops, spandex etc., so poor people don't feel bad seems like a weak excuse to me, more like the desire to go against social norms.

Wearing appropriate clothing is respect for other people.

1Pe 3:3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
1Pe 3:4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

Mat 23:5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,.

Luk 20:46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts.

1Ti 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
1Ti 2:10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

When I go to Church I dress in jeans, and a pull over shirt, and never thought about it being wrong, but of course it was clean and looked good.

I never thought it was an insult to not dress in a suit, and tie, or dress the best I could afford.

But I do not like being like the world that wants expensive things, and motivated by selfishness, and arrogance, and loving money, and material things, and fame, and fortune, and wanting attention, and trying to convince people they are special.

Oh you so special, oh yes you are, oh yes you are.

Which also they can get on your nerves with their constant rattling on mostly bragging about themselves, or trying to act like they are wise, and intelligent.

Oh you so wise, oh yes you are, oh yes you are.

Whenever people act like that I look at them and think I do not get it.

I do not look up to people in the strongman contest, or a body building competition, or any sports, or Albert Einstein, or anyone in the Academic field, or have a high IQ that most people do not have, or anyone of a caliber above the common people.

And people are going to try to convince me they are something special that is not even on their level.

Come on give me a break.

Jesus did not wear the finest of clothes but was modest in dress like the common people.

Some people like to go to Church in the finest of clothes, with their hair done, and their nails done, and their shoes of great quality, which it seems most people do that to brag like it is a fashion show.

But I believe God wants us to dress modestly not wearing expensive clothes which is not a necessity but being the same as wanting an expensive vehicle, and expensive house.

Which is how the television evangelists love it which they also love money.

Of course if they want to wear expensive clothing that is their business but I know some will look down on those that do not do the same for many people that claim Christianity do not abide by the complete concept of love, and are motivated by arrogance.

Jas 2:1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.
Jas 2:2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
Jas 2:3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
Jas 2:4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
Jas 2:5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
Jas 2:6 But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
Jas 2:7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?

Amen 😂

“There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

and there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom:

the rich man also died, and was buried;”

amen Jesus specialized in the poor and destitute and downtrodden and the outcasts of society

On the other hand within our own selves when we’re visiting people we respect and are impressed by many of us don’t feel right tossing in some sweat pants and a stained T-shirt to go worship or visit it becomes something that matters to us personally so if we show up with sweets on we’re going to feel like we’re doing something inappropriate but the other person may not give a hoot how anyone is dressed they just came to hear about the lord and fellowship maybe with someone who’ll accept them as they are

this subject to me seems like it would fall under the same category “ is it a sin to eat meat ? “Or do i need to observe one special day over the rest ?”

Sort of this category

“For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. ( two may not agree on food laws )

Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. ( we shouldn’t judge each other on such immaterial things as food but we should follow our own conviction )

One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. ( they don’t agree on observance of special days )

Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord;

and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it.

He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks;

and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. ( each person needs to do what they really believe on these types matters and not judge the person who does believes something different )

But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭14:2-6, 10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Things like clothing , food , observance of sabbath days those things that don’t regard love for each other shouldn’t be something we think too much about but rather the persons heart towards God and how they live thier lives in his honor with thier deeds and words and just lives they live we should look deeper than thing a tbat aren’t our judgement to make for anyone but our own self

“For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, And every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way.

…for the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.

Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth. And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭14:11-13, 17-19, 22-23‬ ‭KJV‬‬

If I’m convinced I need to eat certain foods and not others then I need to observe that faith if I underrrsnd the gospel Jesus taught that he declared all foods clean to eat then I’m free to observe that by faith but I shouldn’t try to argue with the person who thinks eating certain meats or foods is sinful I should let the lord and then work it out and worry about what I’m convicted of and honoring those things

it’s not wrong or right how we dress but each person has within them a conviction we should follow after but also accept the others no matter how they dress we should look at how they treat other people instead

I don't think anyone on this thread goes to those extreme and the purpose is not so poor people won't feel bad. The purpose is personal comfort within reason as well as a more inviting atmosphere. I'm sure that many people of lower social- economic status view church goers who go overboard in dressing up and looking successful as Christians who lack humility. I would like to remind you that the Church is not a building and any time Christians meet together, no matter the situation, the environment, the attire, or the time, the Church is in session.
