Jewish and Christian

I have a Jewish background and am active in Jewish events. For years, I was longing for spirituality and not just prayer and good actions. I have started doing Christian meditation and it is very calming and calls to me. While it feels strange to be open to Christianity after all these years of not taking it seriously, I now find that the Christian message really does resonate and I am okay in becoming more Christian in outlook.

Pleased to hear it. However, the question you should ask yourself, is "Am I born again?". Christianity is not a religion to be followed or a philosophy of life. Jesus spoke of the Kingdom of God. Unless you are born again, you are shut out of God's kingdom.

In Acts 21:20, they were rejoicing that tens of thousands of Jews were coming to faith in Jesus who were all zealous for the Torah, which is in accordance with Titus 2:14, where Jesus gave himself to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people of his own possession who are zealous for doing good works, so Jews coming to faith in Jesus were not ceasing to be Jews or to practice Judaism. This means that there was a period of time between the resurrection of Jesus and the inclusion of Gentiles in Acts 10 that is estimated to be around 7-15 year during which all Christians were Torah observant Jews, so Christianity at its origin was the form of Judaism that recognized Jesus as the Messiah, which is also known as Messianic Judaism.

If I could suggest checking out John J Parson's writings at Hebrew4Christians.com. He is a Jewish believer in Jesus who I believe has a good grasp of the new covenant from a Jewish viewpoint.

I would encourage you to look up Old Testament prophesies about the Jewish Messiah who was to come, I think you will find they point directly to Jesus!

Jesus also referenced the OT Prophets a lot. He was Jewish by birthright and called the Temple His Fathers' house.

As Soyeong was saying, the first "Christians" were actually just Jewish people who believed that Jesus was the foretold Savior they had been waiting for. And when the apostles (all Jewish by birthright) took the Good News of Jesus to other countries, they went to the local synagogues first.

You don't stop being Jewish when you start believing in Jesus, you just come to realize that He's the missing piece of the puzzle of your Jewishness.

the wisest move anyone can make is to be a born again Christian. the proof of that is the Holy Spirit living with you for life once b.a. & with that, verses John 3:3, John 14:26 & 16:13 reveal that truth.

Thank you for your support and encouragement. While I do not yet believe in Jesus, I am allowing the Christian message to reach me and I am okay with becoming Jewish and Christian. If I come to believe in Jesus in the future I guess that I will become Christian with a Jewish background.

I also wanted to tell you that the spirituality you are looking for is available to every believer in Jesus, the Bible says that one of the reasons He came was so that we could have The Holy Spirit guiding us here on Earth. The same Holy Spirit that came to King David and other prophets in the Old Testament!

When Jesus died, the Bible says the Temple curtain tore in half......the barrier separating ordinary people from God's presence was gone forever. You can have that presence in your own life too if you accept Jesus' sacrifice as your atonement. It's hard to describe what that presence feels like, but it's something I don't want to live without. He has amazing experiences waiting for you when you are ready!

hhhmmmmm! big debate on that. there are a bunch of people who disagree on that. for instance, someone being both Jewish & Christian, which belief are you going to choose when a subject comes up? there are vast differences. around here, i probably met 20-30 Jewish people & all are atheists but 2. can someone be catholic & Christian? i definitely don't believe so. all christians have the Holy Spirit living in them. the H.S. will convict us when thinking, speaking & doing something wrong. catholics don't have the H.S. living with them. if they did, they would listen to & obey the H.S. nudging them to stop saying the h.m. prayer, stop having a priest forgive sins, stop with all the made up beliefs like stations of the cross, lent, praying to saints which is a sin called necromancy, etc. btw, not only is the h.m. prayer useless, it's a sin to pray it! i am discussing this with anyone here on CC, not arguing. i'd like to hear others comment on this.

Valid question, but maybe we could start a separate thread to talk about it? I do believe that the OP is seeking sincerely and that God is working on his heart. Some seeds take longer to sprout and there's nothing wrong with that .

Mr. Larry, please excuse our exuberance, we are all hoping that you sign with "Team Jesus" and sometimes we get a little wound up lol.

Regarding being both Jewish and Christian, there are some traditional things that would pass away or no longer feel right after a Jewish person commits to Jesus, but your lineage remains intact and a lot of the Jewish traditions are actually symbolic of God's love and plan for redemption. Jesus' "Last Supper" meal here on Earth was actually a celebration of Passover, you can read about it in Matthew 26 starting at verse 17. I shall post some of it here:

17 Now on the first day of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”

18 And He said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.” ’

19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.

Jesus knew He would soon fulfil his destiny as the second passover "lamb". The first Passover was to protect God's people from Earthly death, the second provided a way to protect us from eternal death. I do not personally celebrate Passover but I see nothing wrong with a Jewish beleiver in Christ doing so, it just has a more personal meaning to them.

Even the "Communion" ritual that Jesus told us to do in remembrance of Him is based off of a Jewish engagement/wedding ceremony. I had always taken communion with the knowledge it was important, but understanding the symbolic background of it made it more meaningful to me, like a missing piece to a puzzle.
