Hard to explain, I'm not christened or anything like that but I've started reading the bible after I felt called to it.
I have a few questions as I'm a bit of a 'doom scroller' and have the attention span of a goldfish at the moment...
anyway I was wondering if there was anywhere to help me understand the bible and its verses as competently as possible
Thanks to all in advance
(I have the English standard version for the Old Testament and the New Testament)

Precious friend, A Very Warm Welcome.

If I may recommend the study source I have benefitted from for over
3 decades: Berean Bible Society

Please Be Very Richly Encouraged and Edified In Christ,
And In His Word Of Truth, Rightly Divided.

Amen.

Greetings to you.

Praise God, christening is not scriptural, so no problem there.

As we read or hear the word of God, we get faith to believe. It’s the word of God that even gives us hearing.

Romans 10:17 KJV
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Repentance, full surrender, to God, through His Son, the LORD Jesus CHRIST,
Is the beginning of our journey and walk.

Matthew 4:17 KJV
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Luke 24:45 KJV
Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

Luke 11:13 KJV
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

John 14:26 KJV
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Ephesians 2:8 KJV
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Hi and welcome!

Unfortunately the Bible can't be understood without devoting time and attention to it. However, there really are only a few things you have to understand to get started: 1) The first humans at the very beginning disobey God and sinned, separating them from God spiritually. This caused all of us who descended from them to be sinners as well; 2) We needed a way to be "born again," so-to-speak, without a sinful nature and have fellowship with God restored; 3) So God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to do what was necessary; to do what we couldn't do for ourselves. To take away sin and make it possible for us to have eternal life through faith in Him.

There's a whole lot more detail, but this the heart of the Bible message. Keep this in mind as you read.

"This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief." 1 Timothy 1:15

HI welcome to the CC Forums! It's great the Lord led you here. Much good Scripture references have been given so I'll leave you with this, the two Commandments Jesus preached:
36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Mt 22:36-40
No matter what we do, if it's not out of love for each other, we're like clanging cymbals just making noise, 1 Cor 13:1.
God bless and guide you🙏!

get a King James Nelson study Bible. it has really fine study helps & concordances. but here is what to do
1st: Become a born again Christian! why? because you will have the Holy Spirit's guidance & assistance. (John 3:33, 14:26, 16:13).
2nd: great places to start are the O.T. books of Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, & N.T. books of John, 1st John, Romans & James. why? because they are great "life" lessons.
3rd: always ask the H.S. before you start reading, to help you understand what you're reading.
4th: it is always a good idea to read 1 chapter or 2 rather than a lot because of overload.
5th: Proverbs 10:7 teaches; "the memory of the just is blessed but the name of the wicked shall rot"! find a way to RECORD, RETAIN & RECALL!!! blessings to you!

^ Gospel of John is often recommended as a great place to start reading the Bible.
This movie is a word-for-Word portrayal of John's gospel.

Have you heard of the Alpha Course?

Welcome
That’s wonderful you’ve had a feeling that you should just start reading your Bible. That’s exactly what happened to me actually!
In addition to reading the Bible and praying for the Holy Spirit to guide you …
I can personally recommend the Thru the Bible app. It has been a wonderful blessing for my spiritual growth. Just give it a go.. some may criticize Dr Vernon McGee initially for his southern twang/accent but honestly his verse by verse teaching is overall solid and trustworthy.
Another resource I recommend is the ministry of Steve Gregg and the narrow path. He has verse by verse teachings and many lectures and debates on his website… it’s a treasure trove of information.

I like Steve Gregg even though/if/when I don't agree with him on all points. He is well-learned
and well spoken, and gives more than just his opinion, beliefs, and views, often presenting other
views and multiple verses for all. He is also pretty clear on many issues in that that he will say,
this is what people believe, but the Bible does not actually say that anywhere. So it can be very
thought provoking. I like J. Vernon McGee as well. Many such Bible teachers and expositors can
be heard daily on kari55.com. It is a radio program also, so I listen while driving and at home too.
Oh, another things about
thenarrowpath.com (<= link) is that it is a call-in question and answer
format, so he covers a lot of material depending on what types of questions he is fielding.
They also have a lot of archives online, sorted various ways.

We’re on the same wavelength lol
Yes I listen to Kari 550 a lot.

Yeah! I love steve Gregg’s call in show I listen almost every day.
His website has so much value, I’ve listened to hundred of hours of his Lectures 😆

Between the two of them I’ve learned so much …I know they have different eschatology and some other differences in their theology but I can listen and learn from both of them despite that…they are both wonderful ministries.

Yes... There is also the LUMO depictions of the 4 gospels, word-for-Word. The actors in the film
speak Aramaic, but you can’t really hear their dialogue clearly. You can choose whether to hear
it as NIV, KJV, or in the Spanish Reina-Valera translation, as the actors depict the scenes.

Here's a possibility for you:

Or, you can try this:

My friend's a Bible teacher, and he swears by J Vernon McGee. He's easy to listen to also.

I agree. As a fairly new believer, I watched the version I originally posted quite a few times .:D

As I became more aware of different translations, etc, I would have preferred it not be the GNB, but...

Whatcha gonna do? It is extremely well done, none-the-less. And other versions are available
.:)
