I have pondered this of late particularly because I am thinking back upon my own past and how I have gradually changed from unfeeling and intensive to more compassionate and empathetic towards similar individuals with similar circumstances in their past...
but, more to the point what does the Bible tell us?
is suffering or hardship like a key to empathy or can one find empathize without so much of tough circumstances?
feel free to share passages that to come to mind and discuss😀🙏
As its written praise God who does comfort us in all our troubles so we can comfort others. Satan comes to kill steal and destroy God can not. We know in the book of beginnings by a lie and sin all this was handed over to Satan. Satan said this when tempting Christ how it was His given/handed to him and he could give it to whom ever he wanted. Christ told us or GOD Satan is the god of this world. What some do not want to listen to is Satan has rights and does not always need Gods permission. its silly we can go out side and do harm rob and then notice how GOD did nothing what so ever to stop you. Seems GOD was ok with it since He must have just allowed it? What did Christ say when they came to take him? If this was my kingdom my servants would not have allowed you to take me.

So for me according to Gods word there is no sickness that tries to touch me that GOD just allowed it to happen. A kingdom divided against its self will fall. The simple fact everyone that came to Christ was healed. Again GOD can not lie did He not say "lay hands on the sick they will recover". Just some put GOD on some time clock and if it does not happen when they wanted it say "well I guess God didn't want me to be healed.. I am just suffering for Christ. That is not even written. Shall I quote only the OT when it comes just to healing? Yeah GOD made allot of promises. You have to work your faith. What we believe (can be wrong) and say and do, not repenting, not forgiving all these can hinder what God wants to do.

In this world we will have trials and tribulations but He has over come the world. Its like reading to all that believe lay hands on the sick they shall recover. Christ only said what God said. God cannot lie. There is no maybe no lets hope this works. He said shall recover. Peter and John Christ had already rose. After the man was healed the people were looking at them as if they did it "why do you look at us as if we did this by our own power. That name faith in that name healed this man". Oh faith works both ways. Seen heard watched "ever year I get sick around this time" "ever time blah blah blah this happens". That's faith and stay away from me lol.

So are we moved by what see what we hear what we feel? No we walk by faith we live by faith. His words not mine. That faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen. So you make sure you have no sin you forigve on and on. You find what GOD said in His word and you stand on that. What you think I say all this because everything in my life is going (in this bod) going great? Life hits me like it hits you. This is a fallen world. Read what your Father already promised. That means you don't have to ask for it..you receive it. If God already promised it.. why would you question Him? Its done!

So for me empathy He gives it comes not by something this life hits me with. All I said is what I personally believe. It has does always work.. He can't lie. I been doing this living this all my life. I can show you my 1st bible and how marked up it is. He showed me He taught me not some man. Everytime everytime I stand on what my GOD my Father said always happens. I just don't put him on a time clock. If He said it its done. If I doubt then as He said let not that man think he will get anything .. get that? Let not man that doubts think he will get anything from God. Now if you know He hears you then you know you have the petitions you asked for. If you have not its because you ask not or your asking wrong ask in just personal things. See you ask making sure it goes in line with His word.

Pray ask Him about all this don't take my word for anything. You find this for your self. You search don't just blindly believe some post o vidoe no matter how nice loving they are. You seek you study you pray.. PRAY. That is the key. ALWAYS pray.. always praise HIM. In your weakest moments PRASIE HIM! You thank Him..l not for doing that He never did.. you praise Him in every moment. Again been at this for over 50 yeasr. Been up down fallen. I just get up dust off keep going. Try not to hate just love speak words of life repent and sorry this is hard to fallow.. I am awful as writing and speaking. Seek Him always always keep your eyes on Jesus.. put everything though the filter of JESUS. Read Luke 11 13.. if God said it.. I do it

THEREFORE, SINCE we are justified (acquitted, declared righteous, and given a right standing with God) through faith, let us [grasp the fact that we] have [the peace of reconciliation to hold and to enjoy] peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One). Through Him also we have [our] access (entrance, introduction) by faith into this grace (state of God's favor) in which we [firmly and safely] stand. And let us rejoice and exult in our hope of experiencing and enjoying the glory of God. Moreover [let us also be full of joy now!] let us exult and triumph in our troubles and rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that pressure and affliction and hardship produce patient and unswerving endurance. And endurance (fortitude) develops maturity of character (approved faith and tried integrity). And character [of this sort] produces [the habit of] joyful and confident hope of eternal salvation. Such hope never disappoints or deludes or shames us, for God's love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us. [AMP]

Love empathises!

It makes some while it seems to break others. It will eventually turn to gold for all that run to the Lord.

2 Corinthians 4:17 Context

14Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you. 15For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. 16For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. 17For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; 18While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

To love others as we love ourselves enables us to have empathy for them.

When Lazarus' sister Mary went to Jesus, broken hearted; Jesus wept, knowing that in a few short minutes, she would be rejoicing with great joy as her brother stepped out of his grave.

We're told in scripture that "for the joy set before him, Jesus suffered death, even the death upon the cross." Jesus' joy was in making us one with the Lord forever!

It depends on the person going through the experience.. A psycopath would not be affected by personal suffering to the extent of changing them to suddenly becoming a compassionate person.. It would take the intervention of the Holy Spirit upon the mind of a psycopath to transform them into a compassionate person

A very good point yes Jesus knew Lazarus would be revived yet he wept because just as in Ecclesiastes it says to everything there is a season, Jesus wept because he cared for Lazarus that much and he didn't reduce how he felt though he knew he would be revived because to do so would not be genuine...
I mean in today's time the closest we probably get to such a circumstance would be using electric clamps to revive someone but, the question would still be should we be genuine and be emotional when it appears a person has died or should we be unconcerned and cold knowing that the person will be revived?
in this modern age it is especially easy to let our hearts be dulled and uncaring but, caring for others is worth striving for because it helps us be more understanding of each other and kind

yes true, a person who has lost sanity is not likely to change unless they can be reached in some way

I can see why people would dislike the book of Job and it can be hard to read but he is definitely one of my 'Great people' in the bible 🥰
Saul/Paul To me it shows no matter how low/evil a person gets God can and will always step in.

It would be nice to hear about some of your 'Great People' from the bible?
Why is that person so Great to you?
And you can't all just write Jesus hehe 🥰
well this a Christian Forum we can have such a thread if you'd like
my first great person has always been Jonah, yes true later he was sort of a whiny baby wanting Nineveh to be destroyed but, he created the rare occasion of a person Running From God and interestingly enough a prophet of God's at that,he was devout basically giving messages to people from God but, if you look in depth he was primarily giving messages to His Brethren people all around his country where as Nineveh was a place of his Enemies and so of course he didn't want to offer them God's mercy, but, on the other hand he simply needed to say...
Repent or this City will be destroyed, but, he was so conflicted that he ran to Tarsus, and God sent a whale to stop him, but, overall what stands out to me is how some people will only see what They Want, in the end Jonah didn't get What He Wanted and even refused to believe that the people of Nineveh had really changed he thought in no time they would be back to evil ways and God would kill them but, nope they did a genuine repentance it can often be tough what God may ask of us but, it's worthwhile when we do what we should for God...
I mean think of it Jonah Twice could have died in the whale or by the people of Nineveh but, he was spared on both accounts because he finally was doing what was right but, he resented even his very life because he simply Didn't Get What He Wanted

there's this:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. (2 Cor 1:3-4)

just one of the many ways God uses our afflictions. i think these verses are pointing to what you're saying.

ps-- 2 Corinthians is a good letter for those who are suffering.
Amen God/Jesus comforts in those times and helps us to find strength and wisdom to get through are circumstances😀🙏

you're welcome it's one of the shortest books in the Bible so not much to go on exactly, actually some knowledge on the subject I actually learned from Veggietales ironically😁
they have a pretty decent adaptation that gives incite and stresses the severity Jonah might of faced either regarding God or Nineveh, while they add some humor the Jonah Veggietales movie is still about as close as I feel I can get to actually witnessing Jonah and his monumental decisions

That is a funny and kinda cute movie. It definitely gets the message in there. Although Jonah messed up God still helped him 🥰
