By unregenerate you mean saved? You can't be saved until you hear the gospel and have your sins forgiven. So number one is hearing. You must somehow become aware of Christ and the good news. If you then believe it, you'll do what is required in order to be saved, namely, confession of belief, understanding you are in sin, and repentance knowing that you now believe in Christ and therefore have faith that he can save you from your sins, and finally being baptized into Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, thus being saved, becoming a Christian and child of God at that point. A great example of the conversion process is found in Acts 8 with the conversion of the Ethiopian eunuch. He was preached Christ by Philip and then asked Philip about baptism. So obviously Philip's preaching to him must have included the need to be baptized. He confessed his belief in Christ and was immediately baptized. So, hearing, believing, repenting as the Jews did on the day of Pentecost, confession of belief, and immersion in water, baptism, for the remission of sins. That's it in a nutshell.
Between Acts 8 and Acts 2:38-47, you have the essence of the entire conversion (salvation) process.
