hi can I say I am all three of them? because there are days when I sleep well and there are days when its just a whole cycle lol. But in my 'Night Owl' times I read and highlight verses from the Bible then I listen to Worship Music in Youtube. (it's so fulfilling) sometimes I feel exhausted to start the day but them bills won't pay for themselves so I gotta keep it moving lol. Early bird status makes me want to get up and walk my little Roxy in the home park for her to do her business after that refreshment I can either feel really exhausted or just drink my coffee (which is a life saver for my age, thank you God) Anyways yeah those are them days. **This thread is great** shoutout to my friends.

p.s. I love the polls too.

I'm an early bird, have been all of my life. I'm retired and over the hill now so never have too much on my schedule. I still get up early and any exercise or work I do is best done early because by the time lunch time rolls around I'm done for the day. I'll usually take a nap once or twice during the day, go to bed early, get up early, and repeat.

My natural rhythm has always been more of a night-owl. If I don't have morning responsibilities I seldom make it to bed before 2 am. But I work a traditional day shift (8 am to 5pm) and I usually try to force myself to lay down somewhere between 9 and 11. I also take night meds which play a factor as they make me a bit groggy in the morning and it takes most of the morning before I feel fully awake (even with coffee).
I wish I was more of an early riser so I could have some free time to start my day in the Word with a nice cup of coffee, but it just doesn't seem to work out that way in the present time.

Hey Everyone,

I borrowed the term "Permanently Exhausted Pigeon" from a recent Ted-Ed video about people's natural sleep/wake cycles.

I am interested in hearing how people would classify themselves: Early Bird, Night Owl, or Something in Between, and how it has affected your life.

I have always been an early bird, which seems to be part natural and partially learned from my parents. My mom often started her day at 3 AM, and no later than 5 AM. I developed a cycle even in grade school where I went to bed at 8, but got up at 3 AM to do my homework. (Of course, the danger was what if I hadn't estimated enough time to finish before school started.)

I maintained that kind of schedule even through college because I've just always thought more clearly in the still of the early morning.

But of course, real life doesn't care about what our individual body clocks. Throughout my life, I have worked pretty much every shift there is, and I think that somewhere along the line, my inner clock became broken, because I've had rampant insomnia for longer than I can remember. (On the plus side, I don't really suffer from jet lag either, but I don't travel enough for it to be a real benefit.) Ironically, even though I am a natural Early Bird, my favorite work shift was actually the Night Owl shift (10 PM to 6 PM,) because I became more energized as my shift went on instead of winding up feeling like an unwound clock.

But now that I'm on a "standard" daytime schedule, my system seems to only sleep a full night about once every 3-4 nights -- or longer. On the intermittent nights, I'm left with light naps, which certainly doesn't leave me feeling very well-rested. I'm trying to learn more about what I can do with the aspects I can control.

And so, I've been trying to do research on various sleep disorders (which, ironically, some scientists seem to be think might have been brought on or at least exacerbated because of electricity/artificially controlled light.)

It's always fascinating to me how God made our bodies, and how sensitive our eyes and entire sleep/wake cycles are to natural sunlight. I've been learning that some people's natural circadian rhythm isn't set to the standard 24-hour schedule. Apparently, some people have longer or shorter cycles, which plays into why they can never get enough sleep.

This really has me interested in other people's experiences here:

* How would you describe your natural sleep/wake cycle? Would you say you are an early bird, night owl, or somewhere in between?

* Do you have a hard time getting enough sleep? (I think we pretty much all do.) How much of this can you control (going to bed earlier,) and how much are things you can't control? How are you coping?

* How has your natural body clock meshed or clashed with the demands of real-life responsibilities such as school, work, family, etc.? If you've had jobs, school schedules, or life issues that go against your natural cycle, what have you done to survive?


I am really interested in hearing what role sleep -- and how you attempt to get enough of it -- has played in your life.
I feel for ya... Early Bird plus insomnia sounds like an unpleasant combo.

When I have vacations, or sometimes just weekends, 'left to my own devices' so to speak, I tend to drift into staying up later and later. Not sure if that makes me a Night Owl, if my sleep schedule just kind of drifts or if it just has to do with what I want to do.

I've also done all the three shifts in the past. I don't have a problem adjusting to whatevers required, but I probably feel least 100% when I first wake up. When I was in my early 20's I worked night audit/3rd shift at a hotel, and I had a real hard time not falling asleep the first week. I walked/jogged every hour, but if I tried to read a book, I'd nod off.

One of my workmates was doing her thesis on sleeping which I found s interesting, but not just sleep wake cycles but how families sleep and the kinds of beds they sleep on, positions, and whether they share beds or not.

Snoring, talking in your sleep and dreaming are also other topics for consideration. I used to be insomniac until I had to learn proper sleep hygiene as they call it.

As a baby I would wake up of course when mum didnt want me to. I thnk that sets off a pattern esp if you lying in bed, wet, wanting a cuddle and nobody is there to help you. Or if they are, they are dead to the world and sleeping like a log while you are tossing and turning.

Bedtme stories often help but parents cant do that for every single child and are often exhausted themselves. I think its a nice thing to do but children need to learn how to self soothe. In church maybe its assumed you say your prayers at bedtime but I dont recall anyone specifically teaching that.

Teenagers need more sleep and often come to school like zombies and only wake up at noon. Some are up all night studying...or playing fortnite.

People dont really mingle on the threads I make just talk about random stuff. I am a terrible matchmaker, I only do simple card games like Snap! or Go Fish not Happy Families.

Twins run in my family, and I am not one so unless you find my non existent twin, I will remain single, which has its compensations...I am never mistaken for anyone else.

I once went to a church gathering I found out that it was not church as I thought it would be but turned out to be a coven of former witches and wizards.
