One of the greatest gifts from our creator is work.
The universe began with work. The creative effort was neither easy nor without cost. It took six continuous days of serious effort to complete creation. Once completed, the creator rested from his work. The Bible tells us that man as put in the Garden of Eden to work. Adam was tasked to groom the garden and to keep it pure, that was his work assignment. While food was plentiful in Eden, available from very tree, it still had to be gathered. There were no servants in the garden.
In creating the Sabbath, while making it a holy day unto himself, God also requires man to rest from his own work, from the work he does in the other six days.
Work is a requirement. The bible says anyone who does not provide for their family is worse than an unbeliever. It is also clear that effort has great value for the one who works. Through work comes the enjoyment of eating the sweet fruit of our own toil. Work is a gift; it brings us honor and is honored by God. It allows us to use our God given talents to join Christ in the effort to create God’s heavenly kingdom on earth.
The greatest joy in work is the opportunity to be fully human. Without work we are little more than worms in a cocoon. We may but dream of great beauty that remains painfully near, but eternally lost just out of reach.
There is no work in Sheol.
