What is pride? Is pride always sin? If not, when does pride become sin?

Apparently the sin of pride is more common among women than men. How do you think the sin of pride is exhibited in women (and men)?

According to scripture, pride certainly seems to be the opposite of humility or lowliness.

2 Chronicles 32:26

"Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah."

Job 40:11-12
"Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath: and behold every one that is proud, and abase him. Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place."

Psalm 138:6

"Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off."

Proverbs 11:2

"When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom."

Proverbs 16:19

"Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud."

Proverbs 29:23

"A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit."

Isaiah 2:12

"For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:"

Daniel 4:37

"Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase."

James 4:6

"But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble."

1 Peter 5:5

"Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. "

where someone initiates the effort in labor of planning a garden & reaping the harvest, he or she she can be proud of the produce. that pride within yourself is not sin.

1 John 2:16 ~ For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life—
is not from the Father but from the world.
Compare to Genesis 3:6 ~ When the woman saw that the tree was good
for food and pleasing to the eyes, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom, she took the fruit and ate it.
She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.
Not a stretch to see that it was the desires
of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life that caused the fall of humanity.
That same pride of life
remains upon the natural man,
because the mind of the flesh is hostile to God: It does not submit to God’s law,
nor can it do so. Those controlled by the flesh cannot please God.
Christians can do and will act carnally as well.

Enhanced Strong's Dictionary of Hebrew
H1363 גֹּבַהּ gobahh (go'-ɓah) n-m.
elation, grandeur, arrogance.
[from H1361]
KJV: excellency, haughty, height, high, loftiness, pride.
Root(s): H1361

Brown-Driver-Briggs' Hebrew Definitions
גֹּבַהּ
gôbahh
1) height, exaltation
1a) height
1b) exaltation, grandeur
1c) haughtiness
Part of Speech: noun masculine
A Related Word by BDB/Strong’s Number: from H1361
Same Word by TWOT Number: 305b

1 Samuel 17:4, 4 Then a champion came out from the camp of the Philistines, named Golyath, from Gath, whose height (H1363) was six cubits and a span."

It is used as literal height or being high 8+ times.

In this verse it shows what kind of high or above

Job 22:12, “Is not Eloah in the height (H1363 גֹּבַהּ gobahh) of heaven? And see the highest (H7218 רֹאשׁ ro'sh)stars, how lofty (H7311 רוּם ruwm) they are!"

H1363 גֹּבַהּ gobahh, when it used in the sense of character it means a person who thinks they are above others. In the case of YHWH He is above all.

2 Chronicles 32:26, 26 Then Ḥizqiyahu humbled himself for the pride of his heart, he and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim, so that the wrath of יהוה did not come upon them in the days of Ḥizqiyahu."

Psalms 10:4, 4 In the pride of his face The wrongdoer does not seek Him, In all his thoughts there is no Elohim!"

Proverbs 16:18, 18 Before destruction comes pride (H1347), And before a fall a haughty (H1363) spirit!"

H1347 גָּאוֹן ga'own (gaw-ohn') n-m.
1. arrogance or majesty (same as H1346).
2. (by implication, concretely) ornament.
[from H1342]
KJV: arrogancy, excellency(-lent), majesty, pomp, pride, proud, swelling.
Root(s): H1342
See also: H1346

H1363 גֹּבַהּ gobahh, when it used in the sense of character it means a person who thinks they are above others. In the case of YHWH He is above all. Therefore when it is a person that thinks they are above all, it is error

I believe sinful pride is feeling more highly about yourself than you ought. And, I can assure you, I am not devoid of that arrogance. God, I believe, helped me to see it one night about 9 years ago. Scary.

Is pride always sin?
If you couple what I shared about pride being the opposite of humility and lowliness with what SpeakTruth101 shared about pride being equated with such things as haughtiness, arrogance, loftiness, and an exalting of one's self, then I think that you will come to recognize why leaven, which is yeast or baking powder, and which is a rising agent that is used in baking, is symbolic of sin throughout the Bible. In other words, every type of sin is an exalting of our own ways above God's ways, or a rising up of our own wills against the will of God for our lives, or has pride as its foundation.

While on earth, Jesus constantly humbled himself while seeking the will of his Father in prayer, and he therefore only spoke God's words and only did the things which he saw his Father doing. This is the type of humility or lowliness that we ought to be expressing ourselves as those who profess to be followers of Christ, and this is the only way that we can truly remove all leaven or pride from our lives.

1 Corinthians 5:6-8

"It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife. And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you. For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed, In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth."

The Corinthians were "puffed up" (envision the work of leaven, or yeast, or baking powder in cookies, or a cake, or bread) in their minds, and, therefore, they did not throw this impenitent man out of their congregation. Had Paul not intervened, and had this man not been removed from the congregation until the time came when he genuinely repented, then the entire congregation would have been "leavened" because "a little leaven leavens the whole lump".

With this understanding before us, what do you think the average church or congregation today looks like in God's eyes?

Personally, I believe that God sees a gargantuan cake, cookie, or loaf of bread (sticking with the analogy), and I doubt that he finds it the least bit appealing or appetizing. In other words, our churches or congregations are loaded with impenitent sinners, thereby "leavening" the whole congregation, and many of the impenitent sinners are standing behind the pulpit.

Seeing how this question was posed in the BDF which is full of contention, this might be a timely reminder:

Proverbs 13:10

"Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom."

I don't believe pride is more common in women than men.
Whoever came to that conclusion may have done so because of the length women may go to to enhance their looks eg botox, getting everything either made larger or smaller etc etc.
Wasn't pride the first sin of the devil. Interesting that the LGBT (I forgot the remaining letters) call their parades "Pride" or pride month.

If you follow the link in the OP, then you will see that this conclusion is based upon "a Vatican report" (which is useless) or "a Catholic survey" based upon what their "priests" have heard in the confessionals. Seeing how that whole system is corrupt due to its own pride, I would not pay these conclusions any mind at all

Yes. His exalting of himself is what caused his fall, but I am sure that you knew that already, and that your question was only rhetorical in nature. Sometimes, I just like to type...lol.

Before everything is said and done, the remaining letters might look something like this:

LGBTUVWXY and Z.

Now I know my A,B,C's, tell me what you think of me.

Actually, do not tell me.

I already struggle with rejection...lol.

I find it interesting why they used the name pride out of every word they could pick from. Strange would be better lol.
Also why the mobile phone company chose the name apple. Just goes to show you :unsure:o_O

Pride is not a sin, it is "The Sin." Pride is the mother of all sins, from pride flows every sin that was ever conceived or committed. It is the cause of satan's fall and the single weapon he has to use against God's people. Pride is placing ourselves above God, just like he did. (But I agree with seekingthem, this is well understood.)

As for men and women, have you been watching how men's behavior has changed in the last 50 years? Vanity is surely not feminine any longer. Men and women are switching roles. Good luck with that!

Especially when you consider the Apple logo. What was the original sin? Eve eating of the forbidden fruit. Notice the stem at the top of the "apple" logo fits neatly into the bite-hole. I don't believe in coincidences.

...and that fruit was taken from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. In other words, the knowledge of both good and evil are much more accessible now through the use of computers.

While we are on the topic of food, I miss your chicken hat...lol.

And if you type backwards, it displays the book of satan.
