When that happens I try to find some time to take a nap.

No I'm not being flippant. A nap works wonders.

Aside from that, I try to focus on what I can do about problems and do it. If there's something I can't do anything about, I try to ignore it because it wouldn't help anything anyway.

Caveat: This only seems to work for guys though. I've heard guys' brains and girls' brains work different, and for sure this never seems to work for girls.

Does prayer ever enter into the equation?

When you feel overwhelmed you are probably trying to do Gods job. We have to bring our issues to him in prayer and cast our cares upn him for he cares for us (takes care of it for us). I know easier said than done but we will grow in our trust of him as we do so and find out that he does indeed take care of things for us.

Psalm 61

"Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah. For thou, O God, hast heard my vows: thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name. Thou wilt prolong the king's life: and his years as many generations. He shall abide before God for ever: O prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him. So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows."

When I get overwhelmed (especially in the middle of the night), I remember how all of my life, the LORD has taken care of me and guided me. …and then gently, He closes my eyes. …Selah

Depends on the kind of whelmed that is over me. Usually my whelmed is a lack of energy, time or control. And God gave me the good sense to handle those on my own, and from what I can tell God expects me to use the sense he gave me.

He who dwells in the Secret Place
In the shelter of the Most High
He shall abide under
The shadow of the Almighty

I will say of the Lord
He is my Refuge
He is my Fortress
My God, in Him I trust

He will cover you with His feathers
And under His wings, you’ll find a hiding place
Where you’ll be safe

Because he loves Me, says the Lord
I will come to His rescue
I will carry Him through
Because he loves Me

I will answer when he calls upon Me
For he knows Me and My name he follows
I will be with him in troubles
Because he loves Me

So I’ll cover him with My feathers
And under My wings, he’ll find a hiding place
And he’ll be safe within My grace

Because he loves Me . . .

. . selah

God likes to hear from us about all things...1 Peter 5:7.
Also, handling things on our own at work makes us a more valuable worker. Handling things on our own with God makes us rebellious. For us to live is Christ and we can only do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
God desires us to rely on Him...to walk in the Spirit and commune with Him moment by moment. It is our highest good and is most glorifying to Him.
Piper wrote...God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him. This is the essence of Psalm 23.

What, I'm not spiritual enough to meet your standard?

Different kinds of overwhelmed require different remedies. I wouldn't see a doctor about a common cold, and I also wouldn't just take a lot of zinc (what I commonly do when I have a common cold) if I was vomiting blood.

I talk to God all day long. I ask for advice, thank Him for a good night's sleep (which one learns to appreciate more as one gets older, you bet!) and comment about stuff in general.

That doesn't mean "tired" overwhelmed doesn't need a good nap. When I get that kind of overwhelmed I am going to take a nap.

Got a problem with it? Not holy enough?

My sincerest apologies. My intention was help and not offend. Please forgive my inability to help in a manner without causing offense.

Well for the record a nap could not sort this out . not just stressed with a lot to deal with but rather being pulled at numerous ends I hope you get me ..so its not time management issues .its being overwhelming with calamity

Yea sort of I hope some one can be less anonymous. So I can share?
Ooooohhh... You're not looking for advice on how to deal with a certain kind of whelmed. You're looking to vent about your whelmed. That's cool.
