For some reason, this thread about social awkwardness reminded me of a movie that I saw recently. It's not a Christian movie. In fact, someone makes a derogatory statement about Christians early on in the movie, and I think that Jesus' name is used in vain once or twice during the movie as well. These and some other things aside, it was a really good movie in that it did a really good job of portraying social interaction in a way that I had never seen before. I don't want to tell you what that way is and spoil the movie for anybody, but if you ever want to check the movie out, then you can watch it for free here.

I'm a very devout Christian, and, again, it is not a Christian movie, but it actually ministered to me much more than many Christian movies that I have seen in the past have

is it a English thing theres quite a few social etiquette/mores the English have and they can be very polite and reserved depending on the type of class they are and not easy to break into certain circles even when you know the language, there's different accents as well and that can mark a person out...say you dont pronounce your Hs it means something, or you say 'can I' instead of 'may I' or beg your pardon instead of something else
But all cultures have something. Maori have tikanga which is protocols on how to behave at ceremonies and if broken its like a grievous offense.
Asian cultures esp Chinese have this thing called 'face' and that can cause people to white lie instead of just being honest.
I think many people are wary of americans when they come across as salespeople who are TOO friendly and trying to sell something or promote their 'brand'

The movie is set in London, but that really has nothing to do with why I liked it. Like I said, it is not a Christian movie, so there are certain things in the movie that I do not condone. At the same time though, the movie really ministered to me in a Christian sense or in the sense of how we can better love our neighbors as ourselves. I really don't want to give away the plot in case anybody decides to watch the movie, but it is basically a movie about how with a little bit of desire and somewhat risky effort we can turn strangers into close and caring friends.

I went and saw Indiana Jones but there was really not a lot of social things going on there - a lot of men shooting each other basically and one female protagonist...everyone was sort of like a thief
The plot did feature the lance that speared Christs heart altho that was *spoiler* fake and a bit of time travel

I dont condone it (lots of shooting, violence and beating up and vehicle chasing) and actually fell asleep in some of it. Oh but Indiana Jones was a Godparent did you know. So there was some daring rescue and tending wounds.

I try, and sometimes fail, to only put in me what I want to come out of me. That being the case, I pretty much only view Christian movies or movies about love. I used to watch a lot of violent and gory movies when I was younger, but I simply cannot bring myself to watch them anymore.

Did you really fall asleep in the movie theater? I usually watch movies on my laptop, and I sometimes drift off into la-la-land while doing so.

yea this one had reclining seats even, but I didnt know they charged $24 a ticket and my friend didnt want to wait hours for a cheaper ticket in the cheaper seats. So I had a snooze while all the fighting was and chasing was going on.

$24 is pretty steep. I think that adult tickets are around $13 by me, but I rarely ever go to the movie theater. Nowadays, movies are available on DVD shortly after being released in theaters, and they are also available on a lot of online websites where you can watch them for free.

I still think it is pretty funny that you fell asleep in the theater. That would have been better to watch than the movie itself.

Falling asleep in church is embarassing though which is also one reason why I stopped going. I cant interrupt the preacher if the sermons going on too long, and even in quiet worship you cant just get up when you want.

Now anyone reading this must think I completely lack social skills and would be ashamed to take me anywhere

I once tried to teach children how to sit still by making the library into sort of restaurant setting where they all sat at tables and had to read menus while I came round with a book trolley and they could choose their books BUT they had to stay in their seats to order a book. Like a yum cha restaurant.

Some children thought it was great and teachers liked it though some teachers didnt want to play waitress/waiter and chose to make their children sit still by putting on the tv instead and making them watch it.

well it wasnt so bad this week
I got to church after everyone had gone in and tidied up the library. The pastors niece 4yr old was wandering around church by herself, I have no idea where the sunday school teachers were. She had found a ball and was bouncing around with it. I said would go choose a book and we'll read together. she didnt know how to read so I ended up reading the Christmas Story from the beginners Bible in the church lobby.

It seemed she already knew the story, she knew the alphabet and she knew how to spell her name. There were a lot of angels in the Christmas story but she said she didnt think angels were real. The sermon ended and everyone came out, there was scones and jam. we went down and played ball in the hall downstairs away from the oldies.

I said hello to two other adults I knew there and they STILL asked me 'how's work' instead of 'How are you' or maybe 'hows grace?' lol

it seems we have a problem with the dishwasher at church it takes 2 HOURS to do a load. One church lady said I'd just buy a new one and give it to the church because they had fixed the old one, it works, but...it takes 2 hours. However, church never accepts gifts or donations.They want cash. Even if they do get cash donations, they then dont actually spend it on the things needed (they say this in order to save money) as Ive learned from different churches whos buildings and facilities are near falling apart or not being maintained.

I think this comes from some kind of strange church business model cos Ive never really made sense of it. If they made it clear well we need money and we'll spend it on this this and this then people would gladly give if they saying well tithe to us and it will be like a rent-a-pew and we gurantee you a seat on the church board then I dont know.. churches are already charging $$ for car parks. I dont think the money is going to the mission though.

so I dont really know what to think of church. Maybe the purpose driven church ruined a lot of churches because those in rich, well off areas thrived while poorer ones went under, though spiritually it seemed like the richer ones were shallow and the poorer ones deep. I know church is primarily people though but Im wondering how bout the countries where church is centuries old (instead of just a mere 200 years like nz is since the gospel arrived to these shores) and whether their traditional meeting places are just empty shells. A lot of newer churches dont have the traditional graveyards close to them where all the saints are buried together.

1. Everyone should understand that interacting with others in groups is a part of life. Therefore we need to always be prepared to deal with this instead of running away.

2. We always need to be ourselves, but at the same time we need to respect social norms in various cultures. For example In certain cultures people are expected to remove their shoes when entering a home. In other cultures modest clothing is a given, and anyone putting themselves on display would be considered rude and uncultured.

3. There is nothing onerous about saying "Hello" to a stranger and introducing yourself. But no one should expect deep and profound discussions in such settings.

4. Always taking the initiative is better than hanging around and feeling sorry for yourself. So one could make a quick round in a gathering and simply introduce oneself and move on. If someone wants to chat, one can always come back and chat with that person.

Her $24 is NZD bro so the current exchange for NZD/USD is .64 rounded up or for every one kiwi it is .64 of a buck or 64 cents. So her price would have been $15.36 USD. The additional $2.36 she paid is probably some kind of distribution fee, excise tax, or etc. Or a combination as such since it is a international release vs domestic.

As well I am sure the FOREX trading desk priced in the bullish move for the NZD/USD. Back in September the exchange rate was .56 or one kiwi was 56 cents. Our big companies that do international business they will have a FOREX trading desk or a department that figures out the exchange rate to go from the local currency back into ours. So they will look at the volatility and hedge for it so that when they exchange the currencies they get their ask for the property or product.

Volatility being what it is and the market is the market. Sometimes they make a profit on the currency exchange or take a loss on the currency exchange or come out even. So all things considered she paid what you did for the movie and the additional cost is fees and the volatility of the foreign currency market being priced in.

When people start talking stock exchange and markets my eyes glaze over. I had a boss who was always on about stocks and it was torture hearing him go on about his business and profits all the time, which as far as I know were never shared, its not like staff except he and his partner had any ownership or stake in the business...and I am not an auditor.

People who talk about property prices are also bores.
They always going up and its a vicious cycle getting on property ladders. For every boom or bubble there will eventually be a bust. I mean, I dont know what purpose this talk is or how this fosters socializing or relationships unless its a way of secretly finding out how much you earn if you start boasting about the monetary value of your house.
