So what if you committed this sin and ask for forgiveness?? What do you mean by an understanding of the Holy Spirit's work?
If you read the Text where Jesus mentioned this in all Gospels

I and do also say Jesus is the only one who ever said the term " Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit." In the whole entire Bible

We must read and look at what Jesus said and why he said it.

Matthew 12:

22 Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the [d]blind and mute man both spoke and saw. 23 And all the multitudes were amazed and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”

24 Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”

Then Jesus responded to what they said or their thoughts or both?

24 Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”

But Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them:

25 But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.
26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out?

Therefore they shall be your judges.

28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.
29 Or how can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house. 30 He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.

It was after this that Jesus said:

31 “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.

Now reading this in context, The Pharisees were speaking about Jesus when they said he cast out devils by the power of the devil, and the reason why they said this is because the people were asking from what they saw. Could this be the Massiah? So the Pharisees were speaking to discredit Jesus and attack the work he did.

Jesus knew their thoughts, so they were not knowingly speaking against the Holy Spirit. That is why Jesus said the above before telling them what is forgiven and what is not about saying something against Him and against the Holy Spirit.

Jesus is warning them and admonishing them at the same time.

"Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit" has moved into very foolish doctrines to control people. I have heard people say to others you have "Blasphmey the Holy Spirit";" therefore, you are going to hell"

. FYI, who made you the judge of that sin when Jesus is the only one in the whole Bible to speak of this? Good well, intentional believers have done nothing more than sow condemnation. Some of the reasons why people were told they did this unpardonable were:

  • you left that church or denomination
  • you spoke out against the Pastor or self-proclaiming Prophet
  • you were homosexual, sold your soul to the devil, or worshipped the devil
  • said Tongues is of the devil
Unfortunately, to some, Jesus did not say that did he?

What is the reason for Jesus saying this? Jesus said this because the Pharisees were equating the work Jesus did was by the power of the devil. Yet Jesus was telling them you are equating the work of the Holy Spirit to the devil. But the Pharisees did not know that because they were attacking Jesus.

Three lessons here and others.

  1. Jesus is the only one who said this
  2. The Pharisees were the only ones this was said to
  3. Jesus never said, " You have blasphemy the Holy Spirit

I mind everyone that Jesus had no issues in Chapter 23 to say the following to the Pharisees.

I like how there NLT says it:

Matthew chapter 23:

23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples,

2 “The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees are the official interpreters of the law of Moses. 3 So practice and obey whatever they tell you, but don’t follow their example. For they don’t practice what they teach. 4 They crush people with unbearable religious demands and never lift a finger to ease the burden.

5 “Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels.
6 And they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the seats of honor in the synagogues. 7 They love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi.’

8 “Don’t let anyone call you ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one teacher, and all of you are equal as brothers and sisters. 9 And don’t address anyone here on earth as ‘Father,’ for only God in heaven is your Father. 10 And don’t let anyone call you ‘Teacher,’ for you have only one teacher, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you must be a servant. 12 But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

13 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites!
For you shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You won’t go in yourselves, and you don’t let others enter either.

15 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you cross land and sea to make one convert, and then you turn that person into twice the child of hell you yourselves are!

16 “Blind guides! What sorrow awaits you! For you say that it means nothing to swear ‘by God’s Temple,’ but that it is binding to swear ‘by the gold in the Temple.’ 17 Blind fools! Which is more important—the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred? 18 And you say that to swear ‘by the altar’ is not binding, but to swear ‘by the gifts on the altar’ is binding.
19 How blind! For which is more important—the gift on the altar or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 When you swear ‘by the altar,’ you are swearing by it and by everything on it. 21 And when you swear ‘by the Temple,’ you are swearing by it and by God, who lives in it. 22 And when you swear ‘by heaven,’ you are swearing by the throne of God and by God, who sits on the throne.

23 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things. 24 Blind guides! You strain your water so you won’t accidentally swallow a gnat, but you swallow a camel!

25 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy—full of greed and self-indulgence! 26 You blind Pharisee! First wash the inside of the cup and the dish,[i] and then the outside will become clean, too.

27 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs—beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity. 28 Outwardly you look like righteous people, but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you build tombs for the prophets your ancestors killed, and you decorate the monuments of the godly people your ancestors destroyed. 30 Then you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would never have joined them in killing the prophets.’

I leave this with you all.

Leave the unpardonable sin with the one who can Pardon all sin. Jesus is the only one who said it. Therefore, He is the only one who knows who did it.

Many people will stand before the Lord and give account for the people who killed themselves be they were told by " Believer " they can not be forgiven. That is a Judgement, and no one is the Judge. There are people living in torment because they were told this by their Pastor or an elder. I would not want to be in their shoes. God's Judgment is great, and so is His mercy and grace.

Man controls neither.

The concern is this: that one may commit blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. This is why it matters.

However, the Pharisees were attributing to the devil the works of Jesus. Basically claiming God is evil. If this is one's mindset, one cannot be saved, because one cannot accept Christ as He is - the Only, Great, Redeeming God. For all who believe on Christ, He offers salvation.

they did not believe Jesus was God, nor did they know, so you cannot do Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit by default. You must have knowledge of The Spirit and it was Jesus who said speaking against Him would be forgiven.

Can someone explain why this sin is unforgivable unlike genocide, rape, and incest? Why is this sin unforgivable compared to what Hitler, Stalin and Muhammad the Islamic prophet did?
This one is not easy. Some believe blaspheming the Holy Spirit is calling the works by the sweet sweet holy Spirit of the devil. If its making fun of Him the holy Spirit then many here and every where else have done it with just talking about the gifts which are from the Holy spirit. I personally do not believe that as much as its wrong yet its not the unforgivable. I don't know, some say its those that reject Jesus Christ no forgiveness there we know.

Yet what was happening at the time just before Christ said that and after, what was He doing and what were they calling of the devil? As for the other sins... I still don't think "sin" is measured since no sin can enter heaven. That being said Christ said "Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin."

Rejection of Christ is the unforgivable sin. The Jewish authorities knew scriptures and prophecies concerning the Messiah and rejected Him.

The book Hebrews alludes to this. Jewish Christians that had forsaking the atonement of Christs sacrifice:

For it is impossible to restore again to repentance those who have once been enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, since on their own they are crucifying again the Son of God and are holding him up to contempt" (Hebrews 6:4-6 NRSV).

It’s PRIDE… Pride exalts itself as God… Pride wants its own way and wants everyone to honor and admire it.

Satan wants to be God… wants to be worshipped. By saying the works of the Holy Spirit of God are the works of Satan is “blasphemy against God.”

God rejects Pride and Pride rejects God… there is NO FORGIVENESS given to a prideful person, they have to humble themselves.

It is Pride that will bring accusations against God….which is blasphemy. Pride does not know Truth nor can it speak Truth.. Pride can only blaspheme….lie.

Deuteronomy 10:16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.

remember that the miracles Jesus were performing by the Holy Spirit were signs confirming that Jesus came from the Father indeed, and that people may believe.. This same Holy Spirit also declares that Jesus is the Christ.. Now, if one denies the Holy Spirit, they are also denying the truth of Jesus being the Christ..
