Believe in Jesus, reject the Bible, is it even possible?

Hello brothers and sisters. I have a very very close family member who says they REJECT the Bible, but believe in Jesus.

I know most people didn't even have a bible in the first century and you don't even need to read to be saved, but in my opinion now that we do have the complete bible and we CAN read, to reject it is pretty much rejecting God isn't it?

What do you guys feel about this? Is she saved or not? I do not think so honestly, because st. Paul warns us of "another Jesus"

Are there any Bible verses that say something about this topic? Believing in Jesus yet rejecting the scriptures..

The "Word" is actually a Title of Jesus Christ.

So in a sense, rejecting the Word, IS rejecting Jesus.


Ask how he knows he's believing in the RIGHT Jesus.

It's possible a person might hear the good news and believe; but after that they have to be nourished by the word of truth, whether it's from the Bible itself or a shepherd of the flock.

The believers in the first century did have most of the books of the New Testament. They were copied and circulated among the churches. The apostles of Christ went to great lengths to ensure the next generations would always have a written record.

"Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, 'If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.' " John 8:31

Jesus's Words are recorded in the Bible so to reject the Bible is to reject Jesus.

That is where you learn who Jesus is and why we need Him. To reject the Word of God then you imagine a Jesus of your own opinion.

Now let's say a remote village is converted but they hold no physical copy of the Bible. They will be saved but it still hinges on the fact have they been converted to the Biblical Jesus. With the knowledge that they have, is it Biblical? Usually this is helped by missionaries that go in and teach solid Biblical doctrine to lay the foundation.

IMPOSSIBLE!!! that's like a guy who wants to marry a girl & says, "i believe in you but nothing you say or do"! yes, it's rejecting God. imagine a solid born again christian doing the saying & the doing, always edifying, praising, praying & all else compared to someone who rejects the Bible but believes in Jesus. doesn't make sense. that person should read James 2:10, 1st Timothy 2:7 & 2:15!

I don't think that I would be comfortable with saying that "if" a person said that they accepted Jesus, but that they rejected the Bible, that they were in essence rejecting Jesus, for the reasons posted thus far... IDK?

I would want to investigate that hypothetical person out some more... ask questions and such.
I think that there's too much misinformation out there about the veracity, integrity, mistranslations, etc., etc., about the Bible. So, I think that it's a reasonable thing for a new/young believer to wonder about a lot of things relating to God as we understand Him.

Ask this person "Who is Jesus, and how do you know that this is the true Jesus?" If you get a flaky answer you will know what this person really believes.

You make the idea that "flaky" Christians are somehow an anomaly?

Liberal theology allows people to be converted but treat the Bible as second rate.

Liberal Methodism is among the worst denoms at it that I know.

Catholicism is pretty bad to at that.

It's very common unfortunately.

Get saved and then get taught. You can reject the Bible. It happened to my dad. Altho to don't know if he was ever converted

In relation to knowing if it's the ture Jesus they claim they know... I heard an analogy once. If you ask someone if they know a good friend/family member of yours and they answer, "Oh yeah, I do." Then if you ask them to describe the person and their description is way off then you can safely assume they don't know the person.

I think collectively, the answers above have already given a lot of breadth on this... the answers have all been good.


Few Additional Points:

1.) In order to be saved, we need to know certain things ABOUT Jesus... and this all has to come from scripture.
a.) We need to know we NEED Jesus... so we have to understand we're sinners that need to be saved.
b.) We need to know WHO Jesus is... that he is GOD INCARNATE, and so he has power to save us
c.) We need to know WHY he died... that his death was a substitutionary atonement for our sin debt.

2.) All of this information about Jesus, and salvation, and what it all means... this is all part of the basic gospel... and it's found in scripture.

3. When people reject the Bible, that is an act of rebellion: rebellion is the OPPOSITE of the attitude required for salvation, so this would make me very concerned of a person's salvation.

4.) Rejecting the bible is usually just a SYMPTOM of a larger SYSTEM OF BAD BELIEFS... it's usually a symptom that indicates a lot of other problems, including heart problems.

5.) It is "possible" for a person to be sincere, and sincerely accept Christ, and then to later be confused by bad teachers, and disregard the Bible... it's possible.
All you can do is talk to them, as Nehemiah mentioned above, and see what they believe about Jesus now.
If they no longer believe Jesus saves, or that he's God... then I would take them at their word, and assume they are not Christians.

I daily read my Bible and believe that it is God's Holy Word from cover to cover. I am convinced beyond shadow of doubt that it is. However, it wasn't always that way. There will always be those who attack the truth of His Word , undermine the faith of believers and unbelievers alike. God addressed that through His O.T. prophets, His disciples and at the end of Genesis. You even have to be cautious here on the forum because there are many attacks on God's Word and those who believe it.

I understand how you feel about this issue because I have had friends and have family that I expected were saved, but later found out they didn't understand the issues. Perhaps they were led astray as the epistles warn about. With me, I was a sceptical evolutionist as a teenager, but trusted Jesus of the Bible to save me. Shortly after, the Lord dealt with me about what His Word says about creation. He quickly convinced me why Genesis was a true, literal creation. I believed in Christ prior to coming to that conclusion and was convinced by spending time in His Word, by His Spirit.

I'm going to give you practical tools that are simple and you can become familiar with. Then, once you have studied the word along with the brief gospel messages, you can explain it clearly to your family member. You should know more at that point what their spiritual condition is. If they do get saved, or are saved, then the Holy Spirit will bear witness with their human spirit that they are a child of God and His Word is true. Sad to say but true.

It reminds me of the attacks that undermined faith at the University. Anyone in liberal arts colleges and even Biology got hit hard. Most were affected to a degree.
