The devolution of language skills both receptive and expressive is a side issue which may be connected but not really my point.
Comprehension of written text is relative and varies, it is not solely a function of the words in print but also of the reader.
That was one point, the other....
Reading Latin is not Reading English even if the English is archaic.
My bible states that David struck down Goliath. The modern versions give credit to Elhanan. Is this a contradiction? Does truth matter?
ESV 2 Samuel 21:19 And there was again war with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, the Bethlehemite, struck down Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

Soon, someone will come out with an emogi bible, hashtag bible, and internet slang and claim they are the word of God for the modern speaker. We need to update the language from the archaic English we spoke in the 80's before computers and cell phones...
Such a good point a lot of truth... I see it everyday.
Total side issue, but I was recently reading Fahrenheit 451 and some of the sentiments expressed on this thread remind of the some of the dialogue in that book.

This is why I recommend Bible study in parallel with the use of Bible Hub. It's really helpful to see where the differences are. As can be seen in a lot of the translations, Elhanan killed a brother of Goliath, not Goliath himself.
Another downside is that the brother isn't even given a personal identity. He is just the brother of Goliath. We don't even get to know his name! "Oh, I know you! You're Goliath the Gittite's brother! And your name is um.... uh... <snapping fingers>..."

In this case the ESV and NASB are wrong. We know this from 1 Chronicles 20:5 which says in the KJV: "And there was war again with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear staff was like a weaver's beam." Even the ESV and NASB of 1 Chronicles 20:5 say "brother," so there's no excuse for this bonehead mistake. Still doesn't make the KJV God's infallible word in English.
