The Temptation Of Christ

1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.

13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

Acceptance Throughout Galilee

14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

Rejection At Nazareth

16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?

23 And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.

24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.

25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;

26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.

27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.

28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,

29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.

30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way,

Demons Are Cast Out

31 And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.

32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.

33 And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,

34 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.

35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.

36 And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.

37 And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.

Peter's Mother In Law Is Healed

38 And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.

39 And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.

Jesus Ministers Through Galilee

40 Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.

41 And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.

43 And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.

44 And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.

What does Luke 4:18 mean?

This verse records Jesus reciting a part of the prophet Isaiah. When first written, Scriptures did not have chapter or verse divisions. When Jesus "finds" this portion of Scripture, He locates the passage by memory. As was custom, Jesus stands to read the text, then sits to give His interpretation (Luke 4:16, 20). Despite this being His hometown synagogue, the experience will not go as well as it has in other towns (Luke 4:14–15).

In this part of Isaiah (Isaiah 61:1–2), the "Anointed One" is said to come bringing good news, healing, and liberation (Matthew 9:35; John 8:34–36). Jesus reads only what we would consider verse 1 of Isaiah chapter 61, along with the first sentence of what we consider verse 2. As soon as He sits, Jesus declares that the part of the prophecy He has just read is being fulfilled (Luke 4:21). Those aspects of Messiah's mission are the purpose of his "first advent," meaning His earthly ministry (Luke 9:2; John 3:16–18; Matthew 11:2–5). God's completed judgment will happen at Christ's "second advent," as part of the end times (Revelation 19:11–16).

The themes of this prophecy are clearly seen in Jesus' earthly ministry. He greatly emphasized His love for the poor and hurting (Matthew 5:3–12; Luke 14:13–14). He spoke of freedom from sin which only He could offer (John 10:10; Matthew 11:30). Only Jesus miraculously healed blindness (Matthew 12:22–23; Luke 18:35). Those oppressed by demons were rescued (Matthew 8:16).

Thanks for posting Luke 4:18. For some reason, when people read the word 'healing' in the Bible, they think of it always as physical healing. In fact, it is too common for people to think physical about many verses of the Bible that are meant spiritual. This verse is a good place to see that healing is associated with the heart, a spirit thing. "he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted" The other terms in this verse - captive, blind, and poor - might be talking about the spirit also, not that Jesus can't help those in those physical conditions, but it seems to me that the verse is emphasizing the spiritual, like so many other verses in the Bible that accidentally get read in a physical way.

What I mean is the prophets are all as you have shown they all witness of Christ and every aspect his kingdom beforehand from his suffering and death on the cross to his teachings and ministry and miracles and everything else

All the prophets are foretelling of the New Testament as well as thier role in pronouncing judgement and concluding the end over the Old Testament

An amazing verse, but many (most?) miss what he is saying in quoting this particular passage from Isaiah.

Today this scripture has been fulfilled even as you heard it being read.

There in his hometown synagogue, he is pronouncing-- 'I'm just like the prophet Isaiah.'

And he goes on.....

But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s days, when the sky was shut up three and a half years and there was a great famine over all the land. Yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to a woman who was a widow at Zarephath in Sidon.

'I'm like the prophet Elijah.'

And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, yet none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”

In fact, they handed him the Isaiah scroll- like it had been preselected, or like it was a scheduled reading for that day-- and he went and found this particular section specifically to make the comparison. He read from what we know as Isaiah 61 but that section of scripture that he quotes is this Lord speaking directly to the prophet Isaiah, telling him that he was the anointed one (Messiah) who had been set apart and sent to be a deliverer to captive Israel. Jesus is saying in Luke-- 'Me.... I'm like him (Isaiah) -and I've been anointed like he was. 'The spirit of the Lord is upon me,' like it was upon him and I've been sent, like he was sent. I bring the word of God, like Isaiah, like Elijah, like Elisha and all the prophets received the word of the father and delivered it as messengers.'

Look at what the Lord (God) said to Isaiah as recorded in scripture preceding Isaiah 61-- these are the words of God to him in Isaiah 59... It is the Holy Spirit-- (God's spirit) that is upon Isaiah, putting God's words into Isaiah's mouth. Jesus stands up in the synagogue and says--- 'Same, same-- This, is like that.'

“My Spirit, who is upon you, and my words, which I have placed in your mouth, will not depart from your mouth or from the mouths of your children and descendants from this time forward,” says the LORD.

The Messiah tells us that He was sent to preach “the Gospel of the Kingdom of God” (Luke 4:43). This verse gives additional detail to that mission.
In reference to the point about the Holy Spirit coming upon the Messiah after His baptism, I believe we are looking at a prophetic or foreshadowing of things to come. Scripture tells us the Messiah was to be the first in all things (eg: Colossians 1:18 - “And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.”). We know that the Messiah was the only begotten son of God; fully man, fully God. Therefore, He had the Spirit of God within Him at birth. The descending of the dove onto Messiah after His baptism is the foreshadowing of the promises God has made in His renewed Covenant (Hebrews 8: 8-12) - the gift of His Spirit.

Really, no. In Luke 4:43 Jesus is quoting from Isaiah, where Isaiah says that he, himself was sent to proclaim good news to the poor, release to the captives, regaining of sight to the blind, freedom for the oppressed and the time of the Lord's favor.

He was quoting directly from Isaiah, where Isaiah was speaking for himself. Jesus was making an association of his role with that role that Isaiah fulfilled.

I agree that Isaiah was given this direction. The Messiah also carried this responsibility as confirmed in Mt 4:43, Mk 1:38.

I heard it said, perhaps someone could confirm, that the Jewish temples coordinated their scripture reading according to the date so that all temples were reading the same scripture at the same time. The scrolls were passed to the next man in the seat and he took the turn to read.

If this is true, then we can also see the timing of God when Jesus received the scroll and that particular scripture was next to be read aloud: all temples were hearing the same passage of scripture.

This is true. Across the world, the same Torah (the first 5 books of Moses) portion is read. Each year begins a new cycle.

I personally think a lot of understanding is needed here with your statement ----as Jesus did heal Spiritually as well as Physically ------and that applies today -----

I say ----People need to understand what Jesus accomplished on the Cross -------and they need to pay attention to what Isaiah the Prophet describes what Jesus will accomplish on the Cross when he is sacrificed ---

The stripes from the cat and nine tails that Jesus took on His back are Healing stripes ------Jesus took all our sickness and disease with Him on the Cross ----

Notice ---WE ARE Healed ---Past tense ---it does not say you are only healed Spiritually ----it says His punishment that He took Made us WELL ---Brought us Wholeness ----peace ---if your physically or spiritually sick your not whole -----

Understanding that the Curses that was brought in by the written law that man could not keep included sickness and Disease ---

Jesus took the Curse and replaced it with the Blessings -----there is no sickness or disease mentioned in the Blessings only Health is mentioned ------

In today's world sickness and disease comes from the stresses of this life ------Stress --fear ---anxiety ---worry etc causes DIS_EASE in the Body --Mind and Spirit

Peace in the Body --Mind and Spirit brings Health -----it is up to all true Christians to keep the stresses of this life out of their lives ------and maintain peace in their midst ---God has given us His Word and Grace to maintain a ---healthy spiritual and Physical health ---happy --joyful --peaceful --prosperous life

Curses in Deuteronomy 28 ---Jesus took this with Him on the Cross ----

I say ------NO Sickness mentioned in the Blessings ---all born again people are under the Blessings ----but the stresses and anxiety of life when allowed to infiltrate our minds and body can cause Born Again people to be sick ------it is up to us to rely on God and His Word to keeps us in His perfect peace ----which keeps us healthy ------Satan is still the god of this world and he will play havoc with our mind to take your peace away -----and replace it with worry and anxiety ------

This is incorrect. Isaiah was definitely NOT speaking about Himself. He was writing down what Jesus of Nazareth would say about Himself approximately 600 years later. Just like many prophets wrote what Christ would say in the future.

Please tell me this is your own idea, and not something someone has taught you.

It’s not. Isaiah wrote what he wrote in his own time and for his own time and of things that were going to happen. Those things did happen. Destruction did come. Captivity and the survival of a remnant, a return and a rebuilding. These things are historical.

Jesus takes Isaiah and “applies” it to himself also. He makes an association and says ‘this time is like that time’ -and you can bank on it. The pattern of the prophets is a repeating one. Jesus points this out too in mentioning Elijah and Elisha. He’s saying those two are like John and himself. He even states that John IS Elijah in making the connection for us.

When Isaiah wrote of the coming messiah figure he points to Cyrus. And that’s who saved the Jewish nation at that time.

It’s great to make these associations of scripture that applies to more than one era or age… scripture is full of such references and associations, but it’s not like they had no contemporary meaning. When Isaiah wrote of a virgin conceiving and bearing a son— he was writing about his son. This scripture was later associated with Jesus and someone pointed out the connection after the fact.
