Couple guesses/thoughts - the very nature of trying to be tricky and dupe your adversary would be to use methods that might go un-noticed, not perceived as a threat... For example, The Chinese are known for using merchant ships in the same manner, could be a simple extension of that approach...
Alternatively, 1) it would appear to be a perceived act of provocation;
2) the fact that this POTUS opted not to take it down show an act of weakness - testing the waters - like a terrible twos toddler - to continue to push the limits to see how much they can get away with;
3) they DS are striving toward a scare event - proxy war as a distraction away from all their lies and agenda from being revealed...

Not sure what you mean by 'trial'... I said a few things... But in simple terms - they (may have) sent the equivalent of a seemingly non-threatening merchant ship over our air space (with a covert recon mission).... to 1) see if they could get away with it (and they did) and/or 2) to provoke an escalation...

It was an attempt at humor. Now what I actually believe is this balloon and all they other balloons from China should never made it into the USA's air space. But they have been allowed to cruise over the US by those in charge who have actively been selling this country to the Chinese. China already has access to pretty much any military or civilian secrets via our government, corporations and their well established spy network. So the purpose of the balloons is up in the air?
