The Commandments of Jesus

So do you have any favorite commandments of Jesus that you find are easy to practice any that you want to get better at?

What about giving to him that asketh of thee. . . as humans that doesn't always come naturally.

That’s true. What if someone asks for your house, car, all of your money, and every last possession you own? Give it up with a cheerful heart or exercise some wisdom? It seems like there’s some balance here and reason too.

Yeah I agree. I think his heart is that He wants us to love and help our neighbor and hold this earth's things lightly.

Last night I listened to the book of Matthew. I was looking for how to be more like Jesus. Jesus said a lot of things, but something stood out to me due to how easy it is to practice.

12So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Some people call this the golden rule and often word it like "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you." I have heard it often throughout my life. So as I continued my night, keeping this verse in mind, I began seeing many opportunities where I could put this into practice.

Jesus gave many commands and Jesus is our example of who to be like.

John 13:5
15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

21To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

6Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

This is timely in that I just quoted your opening verse to a Christian coworker yesterday as we were discussing a mutual complaint of ours. The context of my quote was in relation to how several other coworkers of ours seemingly have no regard whatsoever for how their actions or lack of actions negatively affect others. For example, they'll make a huge mess and then just leave it for somebody else to clean up. I can't imagine that any of them would be happy if somebody did the same to them, so they shouldn't be doing this to others either.

That's really the commandment that I normally seek to follow or what you called "The Golden Rule". It really is all-encompassing.

I was at work when I noticed one of my coworkers had put her garbage down right in the path of where people walk. Normally I don’t really care if there’s a mess since it isn’t my property, but this time I thought. “Hmmm. Maybe she is very busy and needs help.” So since I was already enroute to throw my garbage away I picked hers up and took it with me. I figured if that was me then I would appreciate some unsolicited help.

I don’t really want to earn the title of garbage collector though. I’m sure people would absolutely take full advantage of having extra help with their garbage. I just wanted to help a bit.

Seems like this might be treacherous in some regards. Is there any wisdom aboutsee helping too often or too much?

Just pick a cooler title like...garbage valet or minister of muck.

I think it was Corrie Ten Boom who called kind deeds flowers. She would do acts of kindness throughout the day and lay the flowers at Jesus feet each night. Probably not a bad practice.

When you treat others as you would expect them to treat you. I think you do it silently, so that you keep your reward upstairs.

When I spoke to my daughter about a similar event, she told me of a saying that goes something like, "If you do it once, it is a favor but if you do it twice, it is your job."
There could be a better way to help. Perhaps you could offer them a friendly reminder that they left their garbage in the middle of the path, in case they "forgot" it?

Good point. There’s the risk of picking up a new job. I like @Inquisitor ’s point about keeping it silent, but it isn’t straightforward because Jesus pointed out it’s the intention that matters.

It’s like there is a right way to do something and a wrong way to do something it seems.

If your righteous acts are done in humility, which is within your heart that no one but God sees, with joy, that radiance that others see, then I'd say God would approve and the recipient should be left feeling "welcomed' and even thank God for (His work in) you.

Minister of muck? Maybe I'll make an acronym for that.
