Stay-at-Home Daughters

I have been staying with my parents for almost 3 years now since the pandemic began and working remotely, but my work is pressuring us to come back to the office and I have been stalling so I will likely have to move soon (a few states away). I am now in my mid 30s. I've enjoyed the quality time spent together such as eating and watching movies together, etc. I have a couple of married friends nearby but otherwise I don't get out much. Basically I am busy with work, movies, reading a bit, taking care of our cat...it is pretty stress free living with my parents compared to living on my own (I was going through a stressful period right before I moved). I wouldn't credit myself by saying I am really helping my parents as they are fairly independent. I take care of my own costs and pay for grocery and some other costs sometimes. I would just say enjoy your time with your parents, it really is a blessing to spend quality time with them. Sometimes it can feel like you are not "moving forward" by staying at home, but as long as you are content that is all that matters.

Amen. That's great you've had that time with them. Sometimes I get discouraged and lonely... I'm the oldest in a large family and several of my siblings have left home so my siblings that are still at home are younger. I love them of course but miss the ones closer to my age.
Like you said, contentment is key. Sometimes I just wish I could go out and do something big for God but I do feel like this is where He has me for now.
I help my family on the farm we work on, and often when I don't know what to do I'll resort to the sewing machine. Or sometimes my pen and paper... or sitting at my keyboard and singing, sending my friends fuzzy covers of my fave songs.

That's nice you enjoy and are able to do a variety of different activities. Most of my waking hours I have my laptop open. Even if I am relaxing and watching TV in the evening, I have my work laptop open and working a bit in the background. I try not to use my work laptop during Saturday and until Sunday evening. During the weekends I use my personal laptop, but not during family movie time. I like to watch sermons, TED podcasts, educational videos, etc. I have been trying to read more. A couple of my friends are trying to get me interested in computer games, but I have resisted so far. I do think I would like some computer games, like owning a cat cafe, etc. but I don't want to devote too much time to them. I would rather spend the time on an online degree. I do want to volunteer which I have done in the past, but it has been hard for me to find a place where I would want to devote my time long-term. It is tiring to work and volunteer.

Are there any girls out there, 20's and up, that still live in their parents' home helping their family? Let's share encouragement with each other. What do we stay busy with, anecdotes, etc. Anyone else with advice or encouragement for us can chime in too.

Well, I'm neither a girl nor a stay-at-home daughter, but I do have a sincere word of encouragement for you. I'm offering it publicly, as opposed to privately, because I don't want it to possibly be misconstrued in an off way as if I have some sort of ulterior motive for what I'm about to say.

Basically, I just want to encourage you in that you come across as a Proverbs 31 type of young woman. I've never said that to anybody before, so it's definitely not some sort of "line".

From your profile picture, to the word of encouragement on your profile page, to your posts that I've read, and the things that you've described about yourself and your hobbies, you definitely seem to be headed down the right path in life.

I almost didn't say anything because I didn't want this to sound as if I'm "hitting on you" or anything, but I had to say something because it just seems so evident, and I wanted to encourage you to stay the course that you're presently on.

I think most daughters go out to work AND stay at home at the same time. its possible when you have a local job or a home and income business. Besides who wants to pay rent?!

Its not like we have nothing to do...emotional labour also has a cost.

Yes I've had different jobs outside the home before. I am a social person so I enjoyed that. I'm curious, I've read a bunch of your posts and come to the conclusion that you're probably a teacher. Am I right?

But I have also taught. Im between jobs at the moment.
I used to say I was a gardener until everyone else wanted me to weed their garden for them lol. Thats something if you are priveliged to have a home, that you can always do.

Some people are always moving houses, I would find that very stressful, but they get used to living out of a suitcase. When you are of no fixed address, life can be hard having no roots.

However not everyone is the settling down type. I think if you ARE at home, youve got to make it as sweet as it can be for those that live there. Then you can say 'I have a home'. Home is where the heart is, and where you dont ever want to leave.

One of the teachers at my school had her house burn down. Thankfully nobody was in it at the time but she got the call at lunchtime that shed lost everything. I cant imagine how that would be but she was very stoic about it and said she was coping and that everything was fine etc but you know how some people pretend its fine when its not.

I think society would greatly benefit from children remaining in the home until they begin a family of their own. The family itself is also greatly enhanced in a multitude of ways.
And God does have you there...preparing you for great things. I imagine David desired to be doing more than just tending sheep. But all the while God was preparing him to be a king. Moses spent 40 years on the backside of the desert learning to lead God's people.
What God has you doing is preparing you as well.
