I'll get right down to it: Y'all going to church on Christmas day?

It seems a bit churlish, right? "Sorry God, we can't come visit you today. We're celebrating your birthday at our house."

But when the whole family is gathering at Mom and Dad's for Christmas... What'cha gonna do?

That wasn't rhetorical. Seriously, what are y'all gonna do this Christmas?

(Please mention which country or state you are in. It will be interesting to see how answers break down along geographic boundaries.)

As for myself (West Tennessee) I can't really enter a vote one way or the other. Aunt Diane's church won't get out until 1pm, so I won't have to make a choice between going to my church and family dinner.

That's part of the reason I'm interested in other people's answers.

Did you really intend this to be a singles-only discussion?

Our Canadian congregation is not having a service, which makes the choice easy.

I've lived in a few places across the USA, and the churches we attended had services on Christmas Eve, which is mandatory for our family, but not on Christmas Day.

My pastor did say church would be open Christmas Day but a shorter service. So Im considering it even though my family have plans to have a brunch type gathering. He also mentioned that there would be a meal provided free for those members who have nobody to spend Christmas with so that warmed my heart.
North Island, New Zealand here.

Since we always do a "Brunch" on Christmas morning, That won't fit with going to service at 10:30 so we'll pass this year here in South Dallas. I don't see "Church attendance" as "Visiting God" it's simply gather with the church, but since there'll be 24 of us at my place, then my front room will be where the church gathers.

1 - This is not just for singles. This forum has married people too. The Singles forum has become the default chill place for people to hang out and chat.

2 - It's the safest place to hold a legit conversation these days. I don't dare post it in BDF.

This year, I got a new job. And my work starts exactly after Christmas, on 26th Dec, Monday. 24th is my flight. I would try to make it for Christmas Eve or Christmas Sunday Mass/Service if possible, otherwise I will watch a service online and pray along. If your home is close to a church, I guess getting to a service would be easy. It's a new place for me, so it'll take some time for me to settle down.

God Bless.

Traveling over Christmas... Ouch! Stay safe out there.

I wouldn't even brave the Christmas crowds at the local Walmart, much less a Christmas airport terminal crunch.

Nice !

My church has a busy schedule this month (daily services)and we also do 24/7 prayer chains.
For Christmas Eve we usually go to the church and Christmas Day we go to the church as well.

I've gone back and forth on this. On one hand I think about the church I've most recently been attending that isn't doing Christmas or New year's services to give people family time. Many of their leaders are in the young families category and they do two services on a Sunday so doing full service on Christmas would mean they were working somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 or 6 hours on Christmas day. That's a pretty big sacrifice, even more if you expect that a lot of the parishoners would stay home with family even if you did have service (and for those going on Christmas eve anyway, how many are really going to come back for Christmas day as well just because it's Sunday)?

On the other hand, canceling Sunday service to celebrate one of the most significant events in the Christian worldview is ..... well kind of like cancelling church on Easter Sunday which would be unthinkable.

Wouldn't it be awesome if churches instead of encouraging all their people to stay home for family time had their whole congregation volunteering those times Christmas fell on a Sunday and just opened their doors to welcome all comers for food and fellowship? As a single I guess I think sometimes the church can have an almost idolatry of family life, but when I get close enough to most families I also realize they need all the help they can get.

I haven't personally decided what I'm doing churchwise Christmas Sunday yet. But if I had a church and it was having services and I was in town, I'd go.

Back in the early days, years ago, I received a warning because as a married man I wasn't supposed to be posting in the singles forum. That's why I question general topics being posted here from time to time. I guess I haven't kept up with the changes. I understand not wanting to get into the BDF, and frankly that's not the place for this either. Why can't this be in the family forum?

To answer your question, our church holds a Christmas Eve service. I imagine a lot of people will see that as their weekly assembly and skip Christmas morning. That will most likely be our plan.
