When Lazarus was resurrected, did (1) he hear Jesus' voice, come to life, and come forth
or
(2) was made alive, hear Jesus' voice, and come forth?

Please give only a short explanation and scripture reference if you respond with more than just a number. Thanks.

It’s the second one (I think).
Jesus called him and that raised him.

Now since I’m a geek I would also like to give you a technical explanation :) which may not be true but this is how I reason it anyway.

This also ties with “in the beginning it was the word”.
The word of God is basically the supreme and ultimate authority to the reality/universe since He created this.

So when Jesus said “Lazarus come out” many things that we know such as molecules, quantum mechanics or other things that we don’t know, Obeyed the command from God the Creator and made Lazarus from dead to alive.

Also the voice command may be a way to show to us humans that He is God because He doesn’t even need to say anything. Just think it and it would happen.

When someone dies to us on earth they aren’t dead to God

“For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭20:38‬ ‭KJV‬‬

In other words Jesus said “ Lazarus is asleep “ but then had to explain “ Lazarus is dead “ to his disciples but to Jesus he was never dead he was sleeping and Jesus woke him up

there’s a spiritual place we don’t yet have access to where life goes on even after death spiritually we can rise up now

“Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭5:14‬ ‭KJV‬‬

One of the reasons I ask for short answers is I sometimes get more confused by the answers. So can you put it on a grammar school level for me? 1 or 2? Or are you saying 3?

Neither. :)

Lazarus was dead physically but alive spiritually. He was in Sheol, the place of the dead. He returned to his physical body at Jesus' command. Jesus revived Lazarus' body by restoring it and reuniting it with the man's spirit.

I will have to catch up with the Scripture references later.

I think I understand now what you were saying. Post 8 I think makes the same point.

"Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear His voice and come out—those
who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment."
John 5:28-29

At that time Your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered. And many who sleep in the
dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, but others to shame and everlasting contempt. Then the wise will shine
like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever and ever.

Daniel 12:1b-3

I'll try not to be amazed but it does sound pretty amazing.

Okay... references...

From the OT we know that the dead were in Sheol:

Genesis 44:29 If you also take this one from me, and harm happens to him, you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.’

1 Samuel 2:6 The Lord puts to death and makes alive; He brings down to Sheol and brings up.

Psalm 6:5 For there is no mention of You in death; In Sheol, who will praise You?

Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might; for there is no activity, planning, knowledge, or wisdom in Sheol where you are going.

The physical body obviously did not descend to Sheol; people's bodies and bones still existed on Earth:

Genesis 50:25 Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will assuredly take care of you, and you shall carry my bones up from here.”

2 Kings 13:21 And as they were burying a man, behold, they saw a marauding band; and they threw the man into the grave of Elisha. And when the man touched the bones of Elisha he revived and stood up on his feet.

Those who have died are still alive in some sense:

1 Samuel 28:12-15a: Then the woman said, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” And he said, “Bring up Samuel for me.” 12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice; and the woman spoke to Saul, saying, “Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!” 13 But the king said to her, “Do not be afraid; but what do you see?” And the woman said to Saul, “I see a divine being coming up from the earth.” 14 He said to her, “How does he appear?” And she said, “An old man is coming up, and he is wrapped in a robe.” Then Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground and paid homage.
15 And Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?

The dead can be restored to life:

2 Kings 4:32-35 When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his couch. 33 He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed to the Lord. 34 Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm. 35 Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.

Luke 7:14-15 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

Thanks on behalf of all the cognitively challenged.
Do you have any thoughts on what God is wanting us to glean from the story?

a haha I’m the most scattered brained person I know so , we’re definately ofnthe same family

aim skewed a bit the other way probably I always want people to say more of what they are saying so I can make sense of it in my brain

a learn from Lazarus resurrection ? Yes I always have thoughts whether they are beneficial to anyone I can’t say lol I would say to look at what Martha learned in that there’s a really profound a revelatory thought that one can pursue and find a path that’s consistent through the New Testament

she thought “ at the last day my brother will live again “ but she was wrong look at what Jesus said to her?

“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?”
‭‭John‬ ‭11:25-26‬ ‭KJV‬‬

itnincludes the dead and thre living

What if that’s true ? And he means what he’s saying ? Lazarus rose a few moments later by the power of his word

at he man on the cross he was told also as he faced death “ today you will be with me in paradise “

at he lesson to me brother and ( I’m so sorry for the length I’m not capable of really thinking in short thoughts ) but the lesson to me is that eternal life has come and been offered not later at the end but the moment we leave our body we’re going to be present with our beloved lord in his kingdom

awe set up lines from what we think but Jesus destroys it with his words and gives us faith to believe

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭10:17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

can a Christian really hear and accept this and have faith ?

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”
‭‭John‬ ‭5:24‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Can we truly believe this ?

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.”
‭‭John‬ ‭8:51‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The lesson I take is Jesus has overcome death for believers we just can’t see e proof until we approach that day of our so called demise and I’m not planning on dying with my body in a few years but planning on standing before the lord that day and hopefully hearing “ well done and welcome “

Death is big To us because we don’t understand it but Jesus is so much bigger and he’s already solved it for us we just need to cling on to him

sorry brother I’ve written a short letter haha

Hey you gave it a shot and thanks for sharing. And I think you may have shortened it by a paragraph or 2. All I know is my brain didn't hurt as much as usual.

When Lazarus was resurrected...
Had to stop there.

I do not consider that a resurrection.

That would mean Lazarus would have a 'second resurrection' in the future, which would contradict this verse...

Revelation 20:5
"But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection."

Perhaps the meaning is that people can die more than one time.

I wonder if Lazarus went to Abraham's Bosom during the time he was dead.

Yeah. It seems sometimes the more questions you ask the more that come to mind.
Hebrews also tells us that it is appointed unto man once to die...what to make of this?
