28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28

I understand that this to mean that following Jesus causes things to be easy but following Jesus requires crucifying your own desires in place of the Lord's desires which is hard. And doing what Jesus doesn't want you to do can be hard. So we can have trials that are not of God.

We are also reminded of passing through trials as a Christian and rivers but we are promised that the fires won't hurt us and the rivers won't overtake us.

It is a refiners fire that perfects us.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.

Isaiah 43:2
These are amongst my favorite Bible verses. Imagine what these words would have meant to a first century Jewish commoner. They were regularly denigrated as publicans and sinners and largely viewed as beyond help by the religious leaders. Suddenly a man comes on the scene offering an alternative understanding. Far from unredeemable they are given hope. Not only was He offering a new perspective but a radical new life. And far from being outcast they are invited into a new relationship wherein their former failures which led to greater burden are actually removed and in such intimate care replaced with an enabling as the intimacy increases.
And so it remains today. Those who have been given up on, perhaps even by themselves, still find in these verses hope and life.
Jesus truly came to bring life and that more abundantly.
