John chapter 1

[29] The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
[30] This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
[31] And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
[32] And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
[33] And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
[34] And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

If you think you know, please tell me.
It is because that is what God expected Him to do. John was doing everything according to God's commands. And how else does one properly symbolize death, burial, and resurrection?

Yeah, John the Baptist’s water baptism was called the baptism of repentance in Acts 19. People were coming from all over the Judean countryside and Jerusalem to be baptized by him.

John the Baptist was a prophet from God and even some of the scribes and Pharisees seem to have agreed. However, it seems some didn’t agree and may have just been playing it safe by getting John’s water baptism.

If you can correctly answer the below question you’re on the right track to understanding what John’s water baptism was all about.

Luke 20:1-8
1One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts and proclaiming the good news, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. 2“Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?”
3He replied, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me: 4John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin?”
5They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ 6But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”
7So they answered, “We don’t know where it was from.”
8Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

Is that why all the non-Christian Jews went to get baptized by John?

Your question was about "water" and you got the correct answer. Water is the medium for water baptism.

But why were the non-Christian Jews going to John to get water baptized? Did water baptism start off as a Jewish ritual that expressed their repentance to God or did the water have Magical powers . John said that there is going to be someone who is going to baptize with the Holy Spirit. Why are humans doing the baptizing?

That is not the question you asked, and that is another matter. Here's your question:
Why did John Baptize with water? As opposed to some other medium.

John's ministry was "proto-christian" so to speak... the whole point was to prepare people to become Christians.
Did water baptism start off as a Jewish ritual that expressed their repentance to God or did the water have Magical powers
It seems you have an idea how to answer to that question already; so, what is the point you want to make?

John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of
one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”

I baptize you with water for repentance, but after me will come One more powerful than I,
whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

If you think you know, please tell me.
it’s all based on Gods promise to wash away the sins of the people and give a new beginning to them. When we get baptized this is why we get baptized

John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And there went out unto him all the land of Judæa, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭1:4

you’ll run across people saying water baptism changed or ended but after the cross it didn’t change

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:38‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Some will then say well it doesn’t say water so that’s not water baptism but

“And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest.

And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭8:36-38‬ ‭KJV‬‬

some will say well that’s just a Jewish thing but

“While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭10:44-48‬ ‭

Really there’s no evidence anywhere of baptism changing at all according to scripture it’s where one begins as soon as one believes they then act upon it

God had promised a cleansing flow of water of life that would wash clean the people sins ( John the Baptist is actually fulfillment of the promise to send Elijah the tishbite , To prepare the people for the messiahs first coming to earth but that’s another subject )

through this prophet would come the remission of sins not as if he was the source but we get baptized in water because it includes us on the death , burial and resurrection of Jesus it’s why you go beneath the water as of dead and buried , and hen your lifted up from the water as of your being raised again to a new life

“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:3-5‬ ‭

the originals who came to John ready had faith in the death for sin and resurrection because the prophets already promised it beforehand

in scripture like Isaiah 53 and several others they were all waiting for John the Baptist to arrive because of this promise that concluded the prophets ot

“Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.”
‭‭Malachi‬ ‭3:1‬ ‭KJV‬‬

John would come preaching repentance and remission of sins and faith in Christ as he did And the. Jesus would appear and give the new covenant

see how the prophets end there ? The gospel begins there with johns arrival

“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, Which shall prepare thy way before thee. ( Malachi 3:1)

The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight. ( isaiah 40:1-5)

John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭1:1-4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

our sins are remitted through Jesus death and resurrection that’s why we get baptized by submersion in water it is an act of faith for anyone who believes “ Jesus does for my sins and was raised again from death for my justification “

tha yes e only reason we get baptized it’s what God said to do to be included in Jesus death and resurrection as you read there in Roman’s 6 but also it’s elsewhere

“in whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2:11-12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

whether one says remission of sins or circumcision of the flesh either way it’s about our sins being washed away in Jesus death and about us being given the power to live a new life no longer condemned

it’s our part in Jesus death , burial and resurrection according to faith alone meaning what he said

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭10:17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

When we hear this

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭16:15-16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

if we believe Jesus said this there’s little doubt whether we will go and get baptized for remission of sins but if we reject it and refuse to believe , why would we bother getting baptized ?

faith requires us to hear what God has said and believe this will lead us to act in those ways baptism is basic faith you believe Jesus does for your sins you then get baptized in his name for remission of sins

That is not the question you asked, and that is another matter. Here's your question:
Why did John Baptize with water? As opposed to some other medium.
You answered the question correctly in your post #3, but it is incomplete.

John 1: 15 John bore witness of Him, and cried, saying, This was He of whom I spoke, He that cometh after me is preferred before me; for He was before me.
John the Baptist was sent by God to bear witness of the Christ. He was sent to identify the Christ. In Acts 1: 20 he tells the priests and Levites that he is not the Christ.
John 1: 23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet, Isaiah.
The glory of the Lord is the Father's Holy Spirit in Christ which was revealed when it descended on Jesus for John to bear witness.
John 1: 25 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elijah, neither that prophet? That is in Isaiah 40: 3,5 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
Those sent by the Pharisees were expecting the Christ to do the baptizing, not John.
John 1: 26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water; but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not.
John is telling them that no one knows who the Christ is but that he was told to baptize with water and the Christ will be made known to him and Israel.
John 1: 31 And I knew Him not ; but that He should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
Even John did not know who the Christ was, but was told by God that the Christ would be one of the people coming to get water baptized by him.
John 1: 32-33 And John bore witness, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon Him. And I knew Him not; but He that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, the same is He who baptizeth with the Holy Spirit.
In John's vision he sees the Spirit descending upon the Christ but was not able to recognize Him. God tells John that the Christ will be made known to him when he actually sees the Spirit descending and remaining on Him. The Christ is going to be doing the baptizing, but with the Holy Spirit (not water).
Matt 3: 11 I, indeed, baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear; He shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit, and with fire;

Again, it is Christ who will be doing the baptizing with the Holy Spirit ( not water). Also, the baptism with water is unto repentance. That means achieving or demonstrating repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Acts 11: 15-16 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how He said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
Acts 10: 44 While Peter yet spoke these words, the Holy Spirit fell on them who heard the word.
The Holy Spirit actually fell on them after Peter preached Jesus to them as in Acts 10: 38-44, not as in Peter's discription of the event to the Christian Jews in Acts 11: 15 which seems to indicate that the Holy Spirit fell on them just as Peter started to speak. Since it is Christ who does the baptizing, they were baptized in the name of the Son and in the name of the Holy Spirit. Those that receive the Holy Spirit of the Father by the Son are baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
The Christian Jews of the time at first believed that Gentiles were not included in salvation through Jesus Christ, that Christian Gentiles had to be circumcized, where and how to worship, that Gentiles had to obey the Jewish Laws and rituals including the belief that being baptized with water while confessing your sins and repenting, resulted in the forgiveness or remission of sins. That is probably why Jews came from all over to get baptized by John. This belief is contrary to salvation through belief in Christ and is promulgated even now. That is also why in Scripture, Jewish Christians at first felt the need to baptize with water to show repentance. It is God who grants repentance and the water baptism of repentance is not necessary because God already knows.

John 1: 34 And I saw, and bore witness that this is the Son of God.
John baptized with water to symbolize repentance for sins ( they called out their sins and their repentance ) and the cleansing of these sins (symbolized by water which cleanses physically but not spiritually). That is why Jews from all around the Jordan came to get baptized by him. John tells the people that he is baptizing with water because he was told by God to do so in order to attract repentant sinners and to be able to identify the Christ who is the Son of God. Throughout Jewish history, when the people of Israel wandered away from God, calamity befell them. When they repented and changed their ways, God forgave them and blessed them with good fortune. Just like water is used to cleanse, it is used symbolically to cleanse sins through repentance.
Ezek 36: 25-27 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean; from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep mine ordinances, and do them.
What God said that He was going to do to Israel, He is doing now to Jews and Gentiles. He cleanses us through the blood of Jesus, and perfects us by filling us with His Spirit who fills our hearts with divine love for God and everyone else. When all our thoughts and actions are motivated by love, we are obeying the Spirit of the Law. Sprinkling clean water is obviously not literal since literal water will not clean them froir idols. Sprinkling of water was symbolic of cleansing of sins which He does now through Jesus Christ.
John 1: 35,36, 29, 40,41 Again the next day John stood, and two of his disciples; And, looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world. One of the two who heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first findeth his own brother, Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messiah, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
Again, the whole purpose of John's water baptism was to identify the Christ ( which he did) when the Holy Spirit descended and remained on Jesus. It was after Jesus had been baptized in the name of the Holy Spirit that He started His ministry by preaching repentance , revealing truth, and performing miracles.
Matt 3: 5-6 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round the Jordan, and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
Throughout Jewish history, when the people of Israel wandered away from God, calamity befell them. When they repented and changed their ways, God forgave them and blessed them with good fortune. Just like water is used to cleanse, it is used symbolically to cleanse sins through repentance. The infinitive " to repent " means " to change one's mind with regard to past ( or intended) action, or conduct, on account of regret or dissatisfaction", or " to feel regret , contrition, or compunction for what one has done or omitted to do".
Acts 5: 31 Him hath God exalted with His right hand to be a Prince and a Savior, to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
It is God the Father who exalts, grants repentance, and forgives sins.
Rom 2: 4-5 Or despiseth thou the riches of His goodness and forbearance and long-suffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the the righteous judgement of God

It is God who grants the repentance that leads to salvation. It is His Holy Spirit that softens our hearts and fills it with love for God and man.
Matt 3: 13-15 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan unto John, to be baptized by him. But John forbade Him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Permit it to be so now; for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he consented to Him. To fulfill all righteousness means to obey the Father's will which is for John to baptize Him with water so John can identify Him as the Christ. Another theory is that according to Isaiah 53: 12 where it says that the Christ was going to be numbered with the transgressors, Jesus was identifying himself with sinners.
Acts 10: 36-37 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all), That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit, and with power; who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with Him.

Peace by Jesus the Christ was both preached and published throughout all Judea and began after John's witness of Jesus as the Christ. It was there that God anointed Jesus with His Holy Spirit.
2 Cor 5: 21 For He hath made Him, who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.
Gal 5: 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word (saying), even ( that is) in this: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

Christ took on our punishment for our sins which resulted in life being owed to Him in the Father's perfect kingdom of Justice and Mercy. This life is given to a predetermined number of people in the time line of humanity who believe on the Father's plan of salvation through Jesus Christ and make up a Spiritual body ( those who have received the Holy Spirit ) of which Christ is the head. As part of Christ's spiritual body, we are in Him ( His body ) and we become adopted children of God. We are perfected by the Holy Spirit who fills our hearts with love which becomes the motivation for everything we think and do (which fulfills the Spirit of the Law given by Jesus ( to love God first and everyone else second ) and thus we become obedient.

It was a symbolic representation of the future Baptism of the Holy Spirit that the LORD Jesus would baptize us with..
Why did they keep baptizing in water all through scriptire I wonder ?

“While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭10:44-

it seems pretty basic if it ended y did they keep doing it ? Long after the soirit was given by Jesus ?
