SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN - BLOG New research suggests both liberals and conservatives are motivated to believe fake news, and dismiss real news that contradicts their ideologies By Scott Barry Kaufman on February 14, 2019

''...Are Liberals and Conservatives Equally Susceptible to Fake News?

The answer is yes. The researchers found that people on both sides of the traditional left-right divide are equally likely to believe political news that is consistent with their ideology, and to disbelieve news that is inconsistent with their side. For instance, liberals judged the anti-Trump story as being much more legitimate than the pro-Trump story, with conservatives showing the opposite judgment. Interestingly, these effects were even more pronounced when they replaced binary party preferences with party warmth judgments. In other words, if you are way left or way right you are even more likely to cognitively distort yourself in all sorts of ways to either believe the news (if it supports your party) or bend over backwards to disconfirm it (if it disconfirms your party's line).

The researchers conclude that "people infer news legitimacy in a way that appears motivated by their own ideological positioning."

These findings are very much in line with Jonathan Haidt's account of motivated reasoning being a big source of divisions in politics and religion.

This finding is also consistent with other research suggesting that there are symmetries among both liberals and conservatives when it comes to motivated reasoning. For instance, liberals and conservatives are similarly motivated to avoid exposure to one another's opinions, and are similarly motivated to deny scientific findings that are inconsistent with their ideology. On the slightly more hopeful side, the average ratings of legitimacy of fake news for both groups was below the midpoint of the scale. This suggests that most people do have at least some capacity to discern true stories from those that are false.

In fact, the researchers found it was important to consider three particular variables to determine whether someone within their party would be particularly susceptible to fake news.

A furniture store near me puts famous quotes or quips from time to time on their marquee.

Today's reads:
News is what somebody somewhere wants to suppress; all the rest is advertising.

Someone once asked which media outlet they should watch to get their news from. The answer? Whichever one confirms your biases.

As far as I can tell, there aren’t any neutral media outlets anymore. Several years ago I was paying careful attention to the news every day and which ones had a conservative lean or a progressive lean.

Big names like Fox and CNN pander to their viewer base. It’s been documented that if either one says too many things that don’t sympathize with the expectations of their audience that their ratings will nose dive.

News is more like entertainment than anything else now. Modern day gladiators, blue versus red. While some of it may be true, it’s more like a sub-genre of fiction like social fiction.

I agree with the concept that both are easily led astray by fake news.

I also believe that there will NEVER be enough evidence that Trump is guilty of some crime for his supporters to believe his guilt. Just as I believe there will NEVER be enough evidence that Trump is innocent of some crime for the Liberals to believe he is innocent.

Even evidence discovered can be "faked." But, it even if it was TRUTH one way or the other those who are against what the Truth proves will never believe it.

So, I wonder if "fake news" is responsible? Or is it the bias of the peoples? The majority of people will always believe whatever News is presented to them that agrees with their views...........

SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN - BLOG
Is Scientific American "scientific" and "credible" any longer?

"The uneven quality of Scientific American articles on topics I am familiar with has led me to question its trustworthiness more generally. I know I’m not alone in that questioning."
https://dailynous.com/2018/09/13/scientific-american-trustworthy-periodical/

Science is now geared towards propaganda, whether it is medical science, climate science, or some other branches of science. The COVID Scamdemic has exposed the fraudulent nature of today's medical "science". The Green Agenda has exposed the lies of the Green Nazis who are determined to destroy humanity.

I alluded to this earlier. It's called cognitive bias. You hear something that already lines up with your preconceived notions about an idea and you say okay that makes sense it must be true. Everyone does it

Better yet. You go looking for anything and everything that lines up with your prejudice....cognitive bias....and ignore what you see as an attack on the truth.

Voila. We now present the news!

Better yet, you throw your hands up, you say what is truth, and then decide to just trust MSNBC, Twitter, and NY Times to tell you the truth.

That's called cognitive dissonance when you are confronted with information that conflicts your view your brain wants to ignore it.
Again, everyone's brains are subject to these types of logical fallacies

I call him completely disconnected from reality I'm pretty sure the Greeks figured out 2,000 years ago that the Earth isn't flat

Another thing to consider is that sites like Facebook and YouTube create what's called filter bubbles.
Go to YouTube and look for something like flat Earth videos and then you're going to be directed to other woo videos

For sure. It's where you go to get disconnected from reality :)

Or other people's realities anyway  Just write something in this forum that goes against the general consensus and watch the fur fly
