I am a new member. I am Jewish and this appear to be a safe and easy place to explore Christian beliefs. I do have a question. The God of the Old Testament appears to be very different than the God of the New Testament. Would somebody like to comment on that.

Welcome, brother Larry! :):coffee:

The Old Testament shows us much about the nature of God, and His nature has not changed.
The New Testament is simply a continuation.
When Adam sinned in the Garden, he messed things up for everyone (as I'm sure you know.) God set up a program of blood sacrifice to deal with men's sins...

Hebrews 9:22
“And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”

The key thing to know is that the system of animal sacrifices was only effective because of what it pointed to. The book of Isaiah shows us what these animal sacrifices pointed to...

Isaiah 53

2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

The person spoken of here is none other than the very Son of God Himself. He is the one that all the animal sacrifices represented. He came down to earth 2000 years ago to shed His blood for us and they called His name Jesus. It was this very same Jesus who performed the work of Creation. He and the Father are One. Jesus is the One who shall sit upon the Judgement Throne at the end of time and the beginning of eternity. He shall judge because it is only his blood shed at the cross that can effect salvation. Men are given the choice of accepting or rejecting His atonement for their sins. Men's eternal state will be determined based upon what they decided to do concerning the sacrifice of God's Son.

The God of the New Testament is the same God, but He has now given all honor, glory, and Judgement to his Son.

Luke 9
33And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. 34While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. 35And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

2 Peter 1
16For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. 18And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

In the old testament Holy spirit came upon certain people at certain times according to Gods plan for them to do His will, Jesus received Holy Spirit from John the Baptist, imparted the same to the 12, and they to the 70 unto today when we may each receive Holy Spirit with the anointing to do greater works than Jesus Himself, as Jesus Himself said.
welcome and blessings to you and yours

In the old testament the chosen ones lived under the law of Moses, in the New Testament Jesus came and very clearly taught that ALL things are New in Him.

Welcome aboard, Larry.

In regards to your question, it might be easier to answer if you provide us with a specific seeming difference between the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament. As others here have already rightly stated, they are one and the same.

In the meantime, the prophet Jeremiah did foretell of a New Testament or a New Covenant when he said:

Jeremiah chapter 31

[31] Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
[32] Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
[33] But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
[34] And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

This "new covenant" or "new testament" was instituted by Jesus' blood.

In relation to "testaments", the writer of the epistle to the Hebrews said the following:

Hebrews chapter 9

[13] For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
[14] How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
[15] And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
[16] For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
[17] For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
[18] Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.
[19] For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,
[20] Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.
[21] Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.
[22] And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

If you were to write your "last will and testament", then it wouldn't go into effect until the time that you, the testator, died.

And so it is with both the Old Testament and New Testament.

Under the Old Testament, animal sacrifices were made in order to put that testament into effect, but those sacrifices foreshadowed a greater sacrifice which was yet to come...the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary.

THIS is the "new covenant" of which the prophet Jeremiah foretold.

Anyhow, please feel free to ask as many questions as you might have. The more specific the questions, the more specific the answers can be.

Again, welcome aboard.

The question asked was the God of the OT the same God as in the NT. The answer of course, is yes. I did not respond to a question regarding the law of Moses or what Jesus taught. Big difference. Are you saying that there is an Old Testament God and also a New Testament God? Scripture makes it clear that there is only one God.

Larry112- you will find much confusion here as most who claim to be Christian aren't really Christian, for a lot of reasons, mostly the work of the adversary.

From the OP-"The God of the Old Testament appears to be very different than the God of the New Testament."-
Of course He "appears" to be very different, mankind, His chosen with whom He was in covenant, was under the Law, with Christ ALL things became new.

Best wishes

If anyone is confused, then it is you.

There were approximately 2500 years from Adam to the law of Moses. Before the law was ever added, men were made righteous or placed in right standing with God BY FAITH. Some pre-law Biblical examples are Abel, Enoch, Noah, and Abraham. Godly men were justified by faith PRIOR TO THE LAW OF MOSES, and Godly men are justified by faith after the law of Moses. There is no difference.

This faith is faith in Jesus Christ and his atoning sacrifice of which all of the Old Testament sacrifices foreshadowed.

Nice way to introduce Larry to the forum, btw.

You should be ashamed of yourself for insinuating that those of us who have told Larry the truth aren't really Christians.

First of all welcome to Christian Chat.
Secondly, I have heard say the God of the Old Tesrament is different from the one of the New Testament, but I don't believe that. The Old Testament focuses on God the Sater and the New Testament focuses on the Sob of God. Of course, many think there are Christophanys in the OT (I believe this as well) but it mainly focuses on Father God. Yet the NT focuses on the Son of God and all He did, but Father God makes a few cameos as well. That is how I view it.

Psalms 51:
9Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

...and that is from the OT! :)

Really easy to find, if you can shake off the lies swirling. All of these numbers and names are American English and Christan Bible numbers, but these verses exist in your Synagogue's scrolls as well.
Jeremiah 31:31-34
“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their Adonai, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

And

Ezekiel 16:59-60
For thus saith the Lord Adonai, I will even deal with thee as thou has done, which hast despised the oath in breaking the covenant. 60 Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant.

And Ezekiel 34:7-31, which is a bit too long to type here.
But key verses here are in 34:16 and 34:29.

And again in Daniel 2:28-35, with 35 being a key, but most especially when one reads Isaiah 59:1-60:3 and remembers that, the entire Torah, and the Prophets, and the Kings, are now in the hands of the Gentiles, in their own langauges, in the name of Jesus.

And if there was a Light to the world, outside of the Shekinah, it's the Torah, at least for the Prophets and Israel.
