Ephesians 4:30 What does it mean?

Ephesians 4:30

King James Version

30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

I see it this way:

If a person is "Indwelt" by the Holy Spirit, the Spirit is then within you. Meaning, you are with the Spirit 24/7, as this is the guarantee, or seal of ownership, until the day of redemption. Eternal Life is what is guaranteed by the Indwelling Holy Spirit.

If the Curse of the Lord has been cut away by Christ, Repentance is granted, the Spirit is granted, and belief in the death of Christ for the forgiveness of sins is what ultimately puts a person in a Right position with Christ's Father. So, whenever a person commits a sin but also possesses the Holy Spirit "within," the Holy Spirit is grieved because the Spirit only lives within a Holy Temple . . . which is the body of a True Christian. Just as God is grieved when the physical temper was desecrated, so too is the Spirit when we sin while in this living Temple that we call a body.

One way to think about it is when we caused our parents to grieve, either by something wrong we had done or when we were really sick. This indicated a relationship, and because of that relationship, it is grieved when things are not "Right."

That's just a start; much more could be written and I'll save that for others.

29No foul language should come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need, so that it gives grace to those who hear. 30And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit. You were sealed by him for the day of redemption. 31Let all bitterness, anger and wrath, shouting and slander be removed from you, along with all malice. 32And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.

If you let ungodly communication come out of your mouth or if you express yourself in an unkind way you should sense that you have grieved the Holy Spirit.

That is why I don't understand how people on CC can argue back and forth like immature children and not feel really yucky about it.

This feeling is because they are grieving the Spirit going against what He is trying to lead them to do. They are self willed and bent on having the last word. They should cry out in repentance and stop it. Learn to follow that still small voice and not insist on the last word. Be kind. Share words intended to help others only. Ask yourself, "will this help anyone?" If not don't write it. Walk away. Let your peace return unto you if it is not received. Stay in peace at all times. Don't grieve the Spirit. Always be a representative worthy of the seal stamp upon you that you belong to Him. Don't make a fool of yourself. Be a good witness.

It means don’t sin, especially frequently and/or grievously, because it troubles God’s Holy Spirit. As a born again Christian, we have a Spirit within us and He’s God. Sin bothers Him… possibly a lot.

If you have learned how to communicate with God, not just praying one way, but actually have a conversation with Him, He’ll tell you exactly what the problems are that need to stop. If you hear nothing that doesn’t necessarily mean anything bad; perhaps all is well, continue the course, await further instructions if there are any.

A Christian's "redemption" is not yet complete, and that is why Paul here and elsewhere spoke of a future "day of redemption".

For example, elsewhere, this same Paul said:

Ephesians chapter 1

[13] In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
[14] Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Again:

Romans chapter 8

[18] For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
[19] For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
[20] For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
[21] Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
[22] For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
[23] And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
[24] For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?
[25] But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

Christians are still "waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body" and no one's "redemption" will be complete until that "day" arrives or until Christians receive their glorified bodies at the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Galatians chapter 5 discusses this in greater detail. The Holy Spirit desires us to grow in love (1Cor 13:4-7) which is pretty much selflessness. He is made sad (grieves) when we choose to walk in the flesh (selfishness) instead.

Believers are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. How much more redemption could there possibly be?

I've already quoted you where Christians are waiting for the adoption or the redemption of their bodies, so why are you asking me this question?

I’m speaking of redemption from sin. And if you please I’d appreciate it if you capitalized the word Scriptures.

Sin affected mankind in spirit, soul, and body. The body part won't be complete until Christians receive their glorified bodies at Christ's second coming, and this is why Paul referred to a future "day of redemption".

As far as the Scriptures (just for your sake) are concerned, that word isn't capitalized in my Bible, so I don't normally capitalize it, either. That said, I hold the word of God in extremely high esteem.

Amen. Those Scriptures are most Holy.

The Holy Spirit seals a believer for the future redemption. In the meantime, don't grieve the Holy Spirit with worldly living.

Spiritually, yes....physically, no.
