Why did JESUS say all manner of sin and >--blasphemy<-- will be forgiven but blasphemy of the HOLY SPIRIT will not be forgiven?

This is a great question; one that has always caused me to wonder myself.

One thing is sure, which is that to sin against Christ has unique consequences, as He died for our sins (which includes those who killed Him).

Acts 22:7-8 NLT - "I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?' "'Who are you, lord?' I asked. "And the voice replied, 'I am Jesus the Nazarene, the one you are persecuting."

We can persecute Christ, yet later be taught by Him face to face, as was the case with Paul.

The Holy Spirit did not die for our sins. And unfortunately, that's all I have to offer on the topic. This is a great question.

Blasphemy against the Son, the man Christ Jesus, the flesh, can be forgiven.

When Peter denied Christ he did not deny God but denied the man Christ Jesus.

When Saul went against the Church he did hot go against God but he went against the man Christ Jesus not believing he was from God.

Many people do not believe in Jesus and some say bad things about Him but believe in God and do not go against God.

Mark 3:22,28-30 And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.

28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:

29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:

30Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is attributing evil to God when He is not evil which the Pharisees blasphemed against the Spirit by saying Jesus has an unclean spirit.

When the people crucified Christ He said Father forgive them for they not what they do for the people did not go against God but they went against the man Christ Jesus.

Here's my perspective on why Jesus said that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven:

I'm reminded of the second part of Romans 1, in which Paul wrote that mankind has no excuse for not believing (and even denying) that God exists (because the creation plainly bears that out). I believe that the Holy Spirit is the One who gives people the awareness of the existence of God. Therefore, to suppress and reject that awareness is to possibly place oneself outside of salvation, at least for a time.

That being said, it can't be denied that the scribes & Pharisees of Jesus' day believed that God exists. It's just that most of them couldn't fathom or entertain the idea of God taking the form of a Man; hence why they thought that Jesus performed His miracles by the power of Satan.

I think that their attribution of His miracles to Satan was a manifestation of their rejection of the Spirit. The Spirit also prompts people to accept & believe that Jesus is God and to receive Him as their Savior and Lord. And those who rebel against the Spirit's promptings, whether Jew or Gentile, will not be forgiven for their sins because they will have not received Christ as Savior.

So, it's kind of a three-step process:

1. The Spirit convinces people that God exists through evidence in the creation
2. The Spirit convinces people that Christ Jesus is part of the Godhead
3. Those who accept Christ as Savior and Lord are indwelt by the Spirit.

Also:

When He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness
and judgment: in regard to sin, because they do not believe in Me; in regard to
righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me;
and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.

Great question yes amen and one that we still wonder about. I think one would have to be a believer. Christ even said if you were blind you would have no sin. Kinda hard to speak make fun of something you have no clue idea what it really is. We know they are one yet we read don't grieve the holy Spirit. Odd we can make fun of God, Christ.. ok who's "we"? lol you understand but not the holy Spirit.

To me this is like Christ saying "if you love me obey/keep my words". How can we love someone we don't know? I didn't love Him when He found me.. He first loved me.. He never gave up on me.. I did Him. ..hmm

This is what I thank. You can find the answer in Luke 21:12-15

12.But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake.

Why are they going to deliver you up? For My Name's sake. No other reason.

13. And it shall turn to you for a testimony.

This is going to be a time for you to step up and be a voice for God.

14. Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer:

You are not to thank about what you will say; you are to allow you heart you spirit to do the speaking. What Spirit should be in your heart if they are delivering you up? Lets find out.

15. For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.

For I: Who is the I? Who is speaking here? Jesus. He is going to give us a mouth to speak with and the wisdom that will come out of that mouth. How does He do that? Through the Holy Spirit. It is going to be the words and the power of The Holy Spirit coming out of your mouth that your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay (King James Dictionary:

GAINSA'YER, n. One who contradicts or denies what is alleged; an opposer.) that are not going to be able to resist.

This is the unforgivable sin. When you stop the work of the Spirit of God.

Matthew 10:16Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.17But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;18And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.19But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.20For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

We find the same thing said here as in Luke 21.

Mark 13: 11But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.

There we have it again. What is the unforgivable sin? To deny the Holy Spirit.

look at the stages of Gods manifestation

“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”
‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

God became a man ( the son ) and blasphemy is against God in heaven glorofied in the spirit . When he was in the flesh to blaspheme against Jesus was impossible because he was I the form of man , when he was received into heaven he sent his holy glorofied spirit into believers

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.”
‭‭John‬ ‭17:3-

the son though he is God become man was sent by God a messenger during this time blasphemy was t possible against him in the flesh but remember God is a spirit

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
‭‭John‬ ‭4:24‬ ‭KJV‬‬

when Jesus returned to his glory in heaven at this point blasphemy becomes possible again but it would now be against the God upon the throne in heaven glorofofoed in spirit

if you look at the example there in your op Jesus performed a miracle and they were saying “ he did this miracle by beelzebub ( prince of demons ) but actually Jesus worked by the Holy Spirit of God

they were giving satan credit for what the spirit of God did this is when Jesus responds with that statement bout blasphemy

they were crediting the devil for what God did. Blasphemy is a terrible thing but I don’t know if we understand it correctly

is it to say something bad about God ? Or is it more complex and deep ?

Regarding the question in the Title of the OP:

He said that because that is His statement regarding the unpardonable sin.

I believe He said it because it is true and He wanted to communicate this truth to others.

I do NOT think he said it so that later generations can say he really didn't mean it... that 'blasphemy' doesn't really mean 'blasphemy', but instead means to die in unbelief or something like that. But the Matthew passage clarifies with alternate wording, which is useful for those unwilling to use a Bible, or even English, dictionary, "whosoever speaketh a word against the Holy Ghost...."

'Blasphemy' is one of those obscure words, and since a lot of people don't know the definition, preachers can tell them it means something it doesn't and they might believe it.

Just what is the unpardinable sin and when can it be commited?

Leviticus 24:11-16
The son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the Name and cursed. So they brought him to Moses. (Now his mother’s name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.) They put him in custody so that the command of the Lord might be made clear to them. Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, read more.
“Bring the one who has cursed outside the camp, and let all who heard him lay their hands on his head; then let all the congregation stone him. You shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘If anyone curses his God, then he will bear his sin. Moreover, the one who blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall certainly stone him. The alien as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.

1 Timothy 1:12-16 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;
Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him

This seems to be just another way to say whoever believes in Jesus will be saved but whoever does not believe will not be saved. Here comes Jesus offering himself to the world to heal and forgive and to love and to save, and from God, but if someone rejects the offer and does not believe he is from God, how can they be saved?

I used to think this might be talking about a single act somebody did that would doom them forever, but that doesn't seem to get at the problem being addressed. if any of those rejecting Jesus would just repent of that and turn to him I think he would save them. It is really a verse that describes people who continue to not receive the gospel, who continue to not believe in Jesus. If only they would turn to him he would save them I think, despite any past unbelief.

Pottersclay: you have rightly pointed out the difference between the religious law that was put to death when Jesus died on the cross and the forgiveness of sin we live under today. What is sad is that a lot of Christians today see the love and the forgiveness given to us today as a way of being luck worm and being justified in their sin. They are just as guilty of disabilities toward God as the man that was stoned to death in the old testament. Today the church puts up with this instead of calling it out as the apostles did in the early church. I do not want to see what happened to Ananisa and Sapphira in Acts 5 happening in the church today. God is not looking for a reason to strike people down dead. God has given us these examples of people being put to death for there sin as well as the many examples of His forgiveness as examples for us. There is a time coming when we will be judged for all of our actions. I look forward to that day. Why; because I know that I have been forgiven of my sins of the past: Acts 5:25 New King James Version
whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, (copied from Biblehub.com)

Back to the church of today. Many do not hold the people accountable for there sin. They do not take a person to the side and point out their sin what ever it is and give them a chance to repent if they do great if they do not you need to get two or three and go to them if they repent then fine, but if they don't you are to bring them before the whole church and if the still do not repent they are to be treated as an infidel (an outcast) this is all done not to humiliate the person but to bring them to repentance.

Being luck warm is as bad a sin as premeditated murder. God does not look at sin in stages this one is not as bad as that one. No sin is sin.

On the other side of the coin and this I why I said I look forward to the day of judgment is because I look forward to getting my rewards for serving God, I want to have a long flowing rob. Judgment is not just for punishment. We could do a whole thread on this.

Can a person blaspheme the HOLY SPIRIT before coming to CHRIST.
JESUS said that All manner of sin and blasphemy would be forgiven except blasphemy against the HOLY SPIRIT.

I like It,Good explanation.
I’m thinking that blasphemy against JESUS when seeing HIM as a man Is forgivable but blaspheming JESUS when you KNOW HE IS GOD Is unforgivable
but somebody might Still want to know why that Is?

I think that blasphemy of the SPIRIT means most likely a christian would do this,Is this possible?

Would an atheist do this If they REALLY KNEW I don’t IMO believe they would remain an atheist If they KNEW that JESUS was GOD.

It’s like how do you unsee something you KNOW Is true, like somebody trying to convince someone that the color green Is brown when you know green Is not brown.

The blasphemy of the Holy Spirit was committed by the serpent in the Garden when he tore his Breath of Life into the Three Lies. It is also the Original Sin. This is where the demons come from. It is how the serpent got the name Devil. These verses Jesus speaks here because the jews said that he has an evil spirit and that he casts out demons by the power of demons.
