Dear Brothers and Sisters, let's discuss this passage from Paul's Epistle to the Corinthians.

1 Corinthians 3:13-15

King James Version

13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

1. What "Day" is Apostle Paul speaking about here? Which Day will be revealed by fire? How will the fire try every man's work?

2. What does it mean that if any man's works abide, which he has built thereupon, he shall receive a reward? Built upon what? And what reward?

3. And lastly, how will some men's (or women's) works be "burned"? It says that these will suffer loss. And themselves shall be saved, yet so as by fire.

What does it mean? Thoughts from you all, dear friends in Christ?

God Bless,
Xavier.

The NLT translation answers a couple of the questions:

1 Corinthians 3:13-15 NLT - "But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person's work has any value. If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames."

I think. as to the day, this answers that question

2 Thessalonians 1:7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

2 Thessalonians 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

2 Thessalonians 1:9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

Matthew 12:35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

Matthew 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

Matthew 12:37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

Our works do follow us. I don't think many people consider enough 'our deeds' remain, both good and bad. Some how having our sins forgiven make us think all is OK, but Judgment is coming and though we may not 'pay the penalty' we are held accountable. And in the end we will end up in 'our own order' which is like 'rank' in the military.

2 Timothy 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

2 Timothy 2:20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.

2 Timothy 2:21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.

2Timothy 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

2Timothy 2:23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.

2Timothy 2:24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,

2Timothy 2:25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

2Timothy 2:26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

SAVED gets you there. Works set your place once you've arrived. There is a war going on, everyday. There are 'powers' that are looking to effect us and our lives. It comes in all forms and we have to remain ever watchful.

I think that hit me really hard when one day I read this, it doesn't read like something to take that much notice of on the surface

Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

but when the meaning of the word HOST is

6635. tsaba ►
Strong's Concordance
tsaba: army, war, warfare
Original Word: צָבָא
Part of Speech: Noun Masculine

which really brings this into perspective

Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Ephesians 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Ephesians 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

Ephesians 6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Ephesians 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Last thing, which tells us what kind of a 'cleansing' is coming

2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

2 Peter 3:11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

2 Peter 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

4747. stoicheion ►
Strong's Concordance
stoicheion: one of a row, hence a letter (of the alphabet), by ext. the elements (of knowledge)
Original Word: στοιχεῖον, ου, τό
Part of Speech: Noun, Neuter
Transliteration: stoicheion
Phonetic Spelling: (stoy-khi'-on)
Definition: one of a row, a letter (of the alphabet), the elements (of knowledge)
Usage: (a) plur: the heavenly bodies, (b) a rudiment, an element, a rudimentary principle, an elementary rule.
HELPS Word-studies
4747 stoixeíon– properly, fundamentals, like with the basic components of a philosophy, structure, etc.; (figuratively) "first principles," like the basic fundamentals of Christianity.

[4747 (stoixeíon) refers to "the rudiments with which mankind . . . were indoctrinated (before the time of Christ), i.e. the elements of religious training or the ceremonial precepts common alike to the worship of Jews and of Gentiles" (J. Thayer).

The RSV however renders stoixeia as "elemental spirits," i.e. spiritual powers or "cosmic spirits" (DNTT, 2, 828). This views 4747 /stoixeíon ("elements") as ancient astral beings associated with the very beginning (make-up) of the earth.]

THAT is what I call an intense word. That one word alone tells us so much it's crazy.

The "Day" spoken of was answered at Post #2 by 2ndTimothyGroup. See also 2 Corinthians 5:10 ... For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

How will the fire try every man's work?
Just as precious metals are processed through heating in order to extract the metal from other elements, there will be a purifying process we will go through. God tells us in 1 Cor 3:13 that a fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.

2. What does it mean that if any man's works abide, which he has built thereupon, he shall receive a reward?
Seems to me that as we labor here in this lifetime and do those things which God tells us (example: the good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them - Eph 2:10), when we go through the fire, the good works remain and we will receive a reward. Amazing! :cool:

Built upon what?
1 Corinthians 3:

9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.

10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.

11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble

In these verses, Paul tells us we are laborers together with God (vs 9) ... that we build upon the foundation which has been laid and that we are to be careful what we place upon that foundation (vs 10) ... the foundation is the Lord Jesus Christ (vs 11) ... we lay upon the foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble (vs 12).

Our works are described as gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble.

When we go through the fire, some of our works will be burned off ... anything that we added which does not belong upon the foundation of the Lord Jesus Christ.

XavierJesusLovesIndia said:
And what reward?
I don't know; however, in other sections of Scripture God tells us about crowns we are to receive ...

The works which were laid upon the foundation which do not belong on the foundation will be burned off. The loss is the loss of the reward we would have received if we had properly built upon the foundation.
