Hey Everyone,

This is meant to be a light-hearted thread that also helps us learn a little bit more about how we each responded to discipline, lol.

I'm guessing that almost everyone out there, at some point, did something they weren't supposed to be doing, got caught, and were told, "Now you go to your room and think about what you did!"

So... is that what you actually did? And what were you actually thinking at the time?

The poll is going to be anonymous and multiple choice, but please don't see the poll as a substitute for a conversation here in the thread. I had thought about making it so that we could see everyone's answers, but I'll leave it up to you as to how much you would like to share in your post.

Please note that the poll only allows me to create a limited number of answers, so if you don't see your answer listed, be sure to include it here in the thread!

It's time for all of us to come right out of our rooms and share what we REALLY did while we were in timeout. :)

Haha this is a good topic @seoulsearch 😊

⚠️Warning might trigger ahead⚠️

To be honest - like Pipp, I was never sent to my room. Depending on the severity of the situation we were either disciplined with the belt, shoe, wooden spoon or bare hands.

It was never discipline where there were marks left on the body but it was more of discipline to teach us not to answer back or be lil brats.

As we got older, obviously the disciplines became lectures then firm conversations.

And to be fair, I deserved some of those hidings because I was a spoilt brat and chose to give my parents the heartache.

So if I was sent to my room in my younger days, that would only mean one thing…..

I never got that option. Discipline was swift and physical. The time to think about what we'd done was just before we did it again..... was it worth it? Usually, no. And the smarter ones of us made sure we did not get caught again if we did play up. My daughter has a "time out" system. From what I see, the grandkids (4) think about and decide it's no big deal. They are four obnoxious brats.

We got nose-in-the-corner instead of go-to-your-room. The toybox was in my room. Mom knew better than to send me there. Nose-in-the-corner is where you stand facing where two walls meet and don't you DARE sit down or turn your head around until Mom says you can.

I can't say it was ever productive for reforming my antisocial proclivities. Mostly I spent the time sulking and brooding or sulking and indignant. But I knew better than to show signs of active rebellion. Mom was bigger than I was.

I don't remember go to your room being a common punishment while I was growing up.

My parents could tell you about a certain young smart alecky kid who defiantly said thank you for the spanking after getting one. And then they learned that withholding things we wanted was a more effective punishment and so there was a lot of grounding from electronics, or sweets or other desireable things.

And I remember attacking a few pillows when I was really angry, but I don't remember if that was a punishment or a I was taught I couldn't hit people when I needed a punching bag and I kind of did that voluntarily as a substitute for hitting people.

The discipline I remember being most impactful though was when my brother and I were kind of constantly fighting as teens and I saw my Dad actually quite sad upset about it and just at the end of his rope wondering how he could get his children to behave more like they loved each other at least a little. I'd say it worked well enough that many years later I bullied my brother into getting a better job working where I worked, but really I think that's more due to not having to live with each other any longer.

I think we just got told off
You dont think about what you did, you just know if mama aint happy, nobody is happy.

Im guessing thats why most people cant wait to leave home. I dont know, having your own room is actually a luxury. You can go to your room, close the door and not have anyone bother you.

Seems like I spent most of my childhood in my room...but it was productive
When my mom would tell me to "think about what I had done"....to me it meant ....how can I do it better next time so I don't get caught.

It was my grandparents who would place me in time out or make me go sit and think about what I did. My folks had the good sense to beat me. A lot more beatings I could have took for the nonsense I pulled, but thanks to time outs was able to in advance work through the game plan of not getting caught again and was able to work on my plausible deniability if caught......LOL

So the lesson Ive learned from this thread is sending a kid to their room to "think about what they did" really was just sending them to plot how to be sneakier...tsk tsk...y'all some naughty chillins.

at school I noticed teachers would give out 'caught being good' books

Theres also Golden R stickers for good behaviour. They get out on a chart and if the child gets enough of them they get special treatment or prizes.

I didnt know this when I first started and I had lots of kids asking me for golden R stickers for doing the tiniest thing. One kid saw I had a whole roll and stole a sheet of them, then claimed I had given them ALL to him lol

I don't recall ever being ordered to stay in my room. I do recall getting Hot Wheels tracks lashed across my behind. Nothing worse than hearing those things whistle through the air just before they crack off your butt LOL

Yep, no staying in my room for me.
