What are they teaching???

A time back i watched a program on t.v where the question was asked "why do you do cocaine?
The person replied....... it enhances my personality
The interviewer asked.....what if your a moron.

So watching the news today about public school teaching young adults and children on "how to love their selves totally got me upset.
I know this has been all over social media as well as seminars being taught on this.
Its become a new fade and is taught now as a curriculum in grade and middle public schools.
They say it will help with the rising suicide rate in youths today.
To me they need to hear that they are loved that they are thought of and that jesus is there to help.
This self love imo is the work of satan. I mean isnt the same sin that led to his fall?
Self love destroys, it leads to pride infact its a form of pride.
Its been a battle ive been fighting for some time now as my grandchildren and nieces and nephews tell me im wrong.

Whatever the world and the secular, godless public school systems teach is false and misleading. However, there is no question that people become suicidal when they lose their sense of "self worth". That is not the same as "self love", which would be more like narcissism.

Every individual needs a sense of self-worth, but they can only get that after they hear the Gospel, repent, and be converted, and born again. Then it is God who gives the believer a proper sense of himself/herself -- that he or she is a child of God and loved by God. Which also includes humility, since whatever a believer receives (including salvation) is from God, and is purely by His grace. Therefore pride is excluded.

Also Paul speaks of a proper love of self, meaning that no one should willingly harm himself, but look after himself. We see this in Ephesians 5:29: For no man ever yet hated his own flesh [body]; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

What Paul is saying here has universal application, and also ties in to the second greatest commandment which is "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself". If you would not voluntarily harm yourself, then you should not do any harm to others. So loving yourself is not necessarily evil in the proper context. This is not the same as loving your old Adamic sin nature -- also called "the flesh". The "flesh" must be crucified so that God is glorified.

It is not real love, just a way to justifly sins.
If doing drugs makes one's personality better, they must not have any to begin with and don't realize it is really making them stupid.

As always in human affairs, there is both truth and and falsehood in the concept of self love. If we are required to love our neighbour as we love ourselves, then self love is vital. The trouble is that the world does not know what real love is. Real love is selfless. Yet self loathing causes people to become so weak that they can see no use for themselves. They avoid other people for fear of being exposed. This sense of hopelessness ("I'll never amount to anything", for example) is destructive and can lead to suicide.

The kind of self love that the Western world promotes is a corruption of what God intends. It leads to entitled narcissism, all too common these days. Yes, people, even unbelievers, are capable of great sacrifice and selflessness. But the increasing level of entitlement undermines this.

One way this reveals itself is in work. At least in Australia, kids just don't want menial, entry level jobs. I know someone who works in job placement for school leavers and long term unemployed. There are jobs available. Some are near impossible to fill because kids want to start at the top, not the bottom. And educators tell them that's how it should be. Such arrogance does not go down well with the rest of the workforce.

All that I've said is general and there are always exceptions. Not enough, in my book anyway.

Of all people, Christians should love themselves so that they are free to love others. We should be an example to the lost of this world.

This and many other issues must be addressed by the church.
Our children and grand children might be the leaders of tomorrow. Who are we going to blame then if we keep silent?
We need to address issues like this or be held accountable.
Wisdom from Gods word is a blessing and great gain but to be silent in your home, in your community where ever evil pops its head up is sinful. Its denying Gods ability. Thats not what we are called to do.
Im very troubled by these self help teachings.
I agree totally with Nehemiah self worth is necessary but we need to focus on perspective.
This self love is working into the church as well. Along with karma and positive thinking philosophy.

its because their parents DONT love them that public schools are resorting to this because they cant actually teach the parents to love their own children :-(

I mean so many go to school with horror stories about how their parents abuse them, split up, dont feed them, work them as slaves, love them only with certain conditions, dont have time for them, threaten to kick them out, abandon them etc

and while parents can SAY they love their children, a lot of them dont ever show it, or they will only love a favourite child. (too bad about the others)

and because many parents dont believe God is a loving Father, it cant be taught in public schools either because apparently the parents prefer to think of God as a tyrannical boss who hates you.

I suppose they could teach children to love their parents, but for some it might be really hard to teach that, especially when maybe half dont even know where one parent is.

FWIW I dont think self-love is the answer but a lot of kids are basically in survival mode. Also, when a parent has told a kid basically they will amount to nothing or better off being not born, what that does to a child I dont know.

Every school ought to have a school chaplain, doesnt have to be a designated role but someone whos heart is for the spiritual wellbeing of their students

some call it pastoral care.

Not a guidance or career counsellor. Not everyone is going to have a career. Some, because of illness or family members dying, wont ever make it graduation or to higher education because they have to work to make ends meet. That is the reality, and most higher education is not free.
