I think the biggest damage to marriage is the flawed expectations of it. Dudes think I’m going to get some sex machine to clean my house and cook me dinner and totally support me in all ridiculous endeavours. Girls think (at least my delusions) this dude is going to cherish me in spite of all my flaws and worship me like the princess I believe myself to be. We will live comfortably with our perfect children that he will coach and raise to be perfect. All of them will show me nothing but love and respect even if I make no sense and have emotional breakdowns when things don’t go my way. We will vacation twice a year and our family photos will show no signs of dysfunction because we will be ideal in every way! Both of these illusions are destroyed on the wedding night when she falls asleep before sex exhausted from the day and he left his clothes on the floor and stunk up the bathroom.
U summed up the majority of scenarios there

Was married for over 28 years and had a great marriage for most of the the 28 years. Even towards the end it wasn't bad. There were no valid reasons worthy of divorce, and I fought tooth & nail to save the marriage, but she still decided not to keep me around, refused any counseling and proceeded to rake me over the coals during the divorce.

Sadly in the modern world women are taught that men are to blame for just about everything including their unhappiness which in their minds gives them reason enough to kick innocent men to the curb.

I loved being married and would do it again, but almost all the women in my age group are divorced and all I can think is they also divorced their men for no good reason and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.(n)

I never really got the 'treat me like a princess' part

I am a child of the 80s. The most famous princess then was Princess Diana, and she was treated terribly by her husband!
But then Charles never really got why she why she didnt keep a stiff upper lip and kept packing a sad when he went off with Camilla. He probably thought it was just ok to have a mistress cos he could afford one.

Ah the delusions of marriage.
