I was cutting across Kensington Gore heading home to my flat in Earl's Court London in the wee small hours of Sunday morning and as I looked down Exhibition Rd I saw a man who was as drunk as drunk can be, he was reeling from side to side from the wrought iron railings to the very edge of the kerb where he teetered and then reeled back again before going into a headlong forward lunge. I had never seen anybody as drunk as that still on his feet.

God said "go and speak to that man about Me"

I cut off after him at once and was soon bearing down on him, but as I got nearer I noticed how HUGE he was, man he was a 6ft 6 incher and built like a brick outhouse.

I drew abreast of him and overtook him and bottled. Instead of speaking to him I bolted up the first side road and stood trembling against the railings. "Oh Lord I'm sorry ... I pray for that man, I pray that someone more obedient will have the courage to speak to him" but God said "go and speak to that man." You don't always get a second chance with God so I set off again as the first time.

Soon I was hard on his heels and drew abreast once more and overtook him and bottled again and bolted the next side road. By now I had broken into a cold sweat "Oh Lord I'm really, really sorry, I'm such a coward, please send somebody who is brave to speak to this man." But God said "go and speak to him"

I set off a third time, this time a little more circumspectly. By now he had turned into Cromwell Rd by the time I caught up with him, again I overtook him but this time I turned around and held my hand up in front of him like a policeman. I had my extremely polite shoes on and quavered "excuse me sir I wonder if I may share this little tract with you, it's about Jesus"

He stood swaying in front of me his mouth open and blinking at me like an owl. I started to blabber. "Jesus can transform your life, He transformed mine and I know He can wonderfully change yours too, He still does miracles today and He will do one for you if you will believe on Him. He works by setting up His kingdom in you putting things right for you and He will send new, good people into your life to help you"

He snatched the tract from my hand and mumbled "I'll read it tomorrow" and went to walk by but I withstood him [brave as a lion now] and stood in front of him. He almost squeaked with alarm "I promise, I promise, I'm too drunk to read it tonight but I will read it tomorrow morning."
I recognised he had a Canadian accent, he was really quite a sweet natured guy, one of those gentle giants you meet once in a while.

I bade him peace and let him go.

I attended London's largest Pentecostal church at that time and it happened that 2 weeks later the Pastor held up a letter he had received from Canada from a soldier who had been stationed in London but now returned home. The soldier recounted how his British girlfriend had dumped him the night before he was to return and it ripped his heart out. He had got rip roaring drunk and was on his way back to barracks and was going to blow his brains out and he's have done it "but a man from your church stopped me in the street and told me about Jesus and I got saved instead"

His mum a Catholic lady who had been praying for her son got saved too. All praise and glory to our wonderful Jesus.
