We haven't seen those friends since the wedding, which is sad because the groom was a very good friend of my husband. But the wife...she just didn't like us. 
I agree. Teachers come in all shapes and sizes. In a college setting, especially, I wouldn't think the bosses would care what the teachers looked like.
Funnily enough, one of the reasons he wasn't hired on to continue teaching at college was because he wore "funny" math shirts. There was no dress code and he was never told "don't wear 'x'" but in the end, it was a big reason he got canned. But God used it as a blessing because my husband was able to get a better job in an area we had hoped to move back to (oregon coast).

If we go back in time, the 50s for example, we see facial hair was typically frowned upon, as were feminine men. Yet gender roles were clearly established. Men were men and had jobs to take care of their family, women wore dresses and were the home makers.
And going further back we continue to see the same pattern. In fact, as a whole in society beards are more accepted now than in decades past. Just a few years ago long beards were pushed and encouraged in culture.
A few niche groups and a 100 year old tradition that beards are unprofessional doesn't exactly scream demonic attack.

Sunday School class leader was the same way....always with the baby face. A very few hairs on his chin was the extent of his beard. Not much for his upper lip either.
So if we ever got to talking about shaving he felt left out.
I personally use a straight razor because where I do grow a beard I only shave the sides off once a week at best. And a straight razor handles that easier than any disposable razor.
So I strop and use a badger brush and get after it.... besides... real shaving soaps smell better than the junk in a can.

Straight razors are a matter of convenience for me...they don't get clogged up the way the disposables do.
But I'm not the only one who does it...there's a steep learning curve to them and they aren't something I recommend for everyone...safety protocols for working with sharp instruments must be followed or else you will pay the price with your face, fingers, ears, or some other body part.
Look up "badger and blade" website...there's a whole forum about straight razor shaving. Some use new ones others use japanese steel and others use vintage WWI and WWII era razors...I only heard of one from the civil war era.
So...it's not a macho thing. It's a convenience thing and for others they seem to find single edge shaving to be more comfortable than twin, three or four blade shavers. Not really sure about that as I can use either...but if I do find the need to shave regularly I will probably return to twin blade shavers. But others will refuse...hey, it's their face and not mine...I don't have to live with those guys.
