We helped build their ports, and shipping companies, to take advantage of cheap labor. Now they own us.

I wouldn't say they necessarily own us . I think while it appears that way , the real truth the respective world leaders know, and we the slave (working) class don't, is the status of individual nations and political ideologies particular to individual nations, is over with. They're all in it together.

While keeping up the appearance of the former axis and allies front, is theater for the rest of us.
That we continue to believe there are good guys and bad guys, free countries, and oppressed people's, and we as citizens of either one have to keep to what we perceive as our patriotic duty in order to sustain our way of life.

Wanna bet that and companies like it are Chinese shell companies? Or Iranian, Iraqi, even Saudi for that matter.

I would wonder how many properties American shells have bought up around the world?

Yes. Former president Nixon has much to answer for, as has the former PM of Australia, Gough Whitlam. The hypocrisy of goverments of that era and onwards is breathtaking. South Africa was bullied and blackmailed into ending apartheid. China was funded by the West to become a threat to the West. China sent in tanks to literally crush student demonstrations in Tienanmen Square. Meanwhile, it was business as usual in the West. Dollar signs far outweigh ethics. That has come back to bite.

That's not so bad for the USA. Yet. It's not good for Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia. My hope is that they build their ships out of the same rubbish steel they export to Australia. They won't last the first storm. Tough on the sailors though.

Not that he would ever care but , Bill Clinton has a great deal more than Nixon to answer for.
He signed the paperwork that gave China the right to import slave goods into America.

And Congress and numerous presidents will never answer for all the debt the American taxpayers incurred well into the future due to our borrowing monies from China.

Lets not forget he also gave them missile guidance technology.

Indeed. He sold our IBM tech to China. An act of Treason.
