This way of saying, that people who stop being Christian never were believers, comes from a certain type of theology of once saved always saved. They have to give answer as to why some backslide away from the Christian life so they say they weren't believers to begin with. Mark 4 however states the seed of the word of God fell on different types of ground and Jesus said himself,

Some are like the seeds sown on rocky ground. They hear the word and at once receive it with joy. But they themselves have no root, and they remain for only a season. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. Mk 4:16

So if they received the word with joy and remained for a season that to mean to me that they did believe. But it's standing steadfast and enduring which needs to be understood. Now if you were to ask how do I know I'll do that? I'd think every day we just have to make that decision ourselves. So it's not do you have genuine faith? Well you do right now the word is in you and you're remaining in it. But are you going to make the decision tomorrow and the next day and the next day after that....to endure? The leads one into asking then what does it take to endure? Worship, praise, prayer, feeding one's spirit with the word of God daily and seeking to do his will. You do that now. It's up to you if you do that tomorrow, so yes....I'd say right now YOU HAVE, genuine faith and I wouldn't allow any thought that comes to my mind tell me anything different.
Thanks. It would seem like they had faith on the rocky ground.

Not exactly. Jesus died and rose again for the sin of the world, yet many will perish. So, what He did doesn't save everyone.
Jesus death and resurrection are the core of the Christian faith. Without this there is no salvation. But people need to receive and believe on Jesus. I have received and believed on Jesus .

Is this news to you, Cheri? Many people reject what Christ did and they will perish.

Yes, clearly, people need to repent and accept what Jesus did for them and they will be saved. If you have, then you are born again.

I don’t reject it.
Then I suggest you stop focusing on yourself and focus on Him.

Isaiah 26:3Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

If you are kept in perfect peace, there is no room for doubt.

Cherie,
Bottom line is you must be born again to enter the kingdom of heaven. Confess to God that you are a sinner.. not just that you have sinned and you want forgiveness for some sins you committed. Jesus died, not just for the sins you committed yesterday, are committing right now, and will commit in the future. He DIED FOR SINNERS. This is a covering of who and what we are, not just what we have done. If you do not confess to God, repent from you wicked ways, accept Jesus' sacrifice for you, a sinner, you will not be born again and will not be forgiven. There is no ritual (like baptism) that can accomplish this.
Ok can we separate this sinner bit and let's see if we can agree.

You say confess to God that you are sinner.
Are you talking about the following?

Luke 18:13
13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’

So when we talk about being a sinner we talk about all the sins we have done.
Basically past sins which we ask Jesus to forgive us off.

But is that starting point?

For me the starting point is this.

John 16:8-9
8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.9 The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me.

The world's sin is unbelief in him.
When we repent of this sin then our sins before, current and future not forgiven on the cross?

As a result of confession have we not repented of our sins?
That being change me from what I was to be what I am in you.
Be like you.
I believe that when we repent of our sin of unbelief in Jesus then we seek him to help us to be like him.

We are descendants of Adam, fallen man. Our sin isn't the sin of unbelief. We are literally born spiritually dead to God because of Adam's disobedience. Even the demons believe, and they shudder. We are sinners to the core, we are not just sinning.. we are sinners.

LOL. I actually have a very beautiful garden. It contains avocado trees, plum tree, peach tree, lemon tree, fig tree, orange tree, papaya tree and gorgeous plumeria trees that are blooming like crazy!

As for praying in tongues, we've had that discussion already.

Is saying YIKES rude when you make such absurd comments as being 'watered in'? I'm trying to help this woman and you are doing no good.
What a great garden you have.
Where do you live? Not stalking but such an array of trees.

When I was younger a friend of mine had a plum tree, I was allowed to pick the plums of the tree and eat them. Yum yum.

I like a peach but much prefer a nectarine.
For some reason a peach skin grates me like a chalk being used on a blackboard.
Yet a nectarine is smooth.

We live in Southern California. I planted most of it myself. Oh, forgot to mention I also have a grape vine that wraps around our upper deck and we have some very yummy grapes this year! They are small, but they are from my garden, so.... :)

What did Jesus say about the sin of unbelief?
I posted the verse. It's clear.
Jesus said it.

If we repent of the sin of unbelief then does God see us as sinners?
If so then we have have a problem?

With regards to demons I cannot see the relevance.

Yes we were born spiritually dead to God but as a result of repenting of unbelief in Jesus we are spiritually alive.

I just read that again in KJV and it's the first time that actually stuck out to me. I know that unbelief is the only unforgivable sin (blasphemy of the Holy Spirit that testifies of Jesus). When it comes down to it, it makes sense. We are all born dead to God and if we continue in that, it basically means we reject the truth.. the Lord. We remain in unbelief.

Ok agree with me or not?
If we repent of unbelief in Jesus does God see us a sinners still?

No, I didn't think that I was suggesting that. After we are born again, God sees us in Jesus, so He sees us as perfect, never having sinned at all. The point I was trying to make is that sometimes people believe Jesus died for the sins we committed yesterday, but tomorrow is a different story. That is why I make the point that Jesus didn't just die for sins, He died for sinners.. for people.

Interesting the above is what I replied to but not what I saw.
