When did this happen; we don’t understand,
We don’t feel any different, yet they tell us it’s true.
It must be so;
We’re just not sure what it means.
We still have hopes and dreams; feel joy and sorrow.
Some still depend on us.
A few still love us enough to care,
And we still grow, and laugh, and dance.
We still feed some who are hungry,
And there are children we still protect.
Some need our constant care and love,
And we pray, Lord let us stay for them.
They say we cost too much,
Use more than we produce,
But in our life, we’ve taken nothing,
While helping others through all those years.
We were once called great and were heroes,
And risked our lives to make others safe and free.
Mammon was never the goal,
But service to all who came in need.
Now they laugh at us; we refuse their gadgets,
They think it’s stupidity, but it’s really our choice.
They label us out of touch; don’t follow the fads,
But we do understand; just refuse their message.
Yet shouts of the truth are still on our lips,
To give warning; avoid the fall!
But they cannot hear for the roar in their ears,
And wonder at our tears.
But little children still run to us,
And throw themselves joyfully into our hands;
While we wait just a little longer,
For the embrace that at last understands.
