do not believe that we are utterly unable to keep the 10 commandments
The Apostle Jude was inspired to warn us of this very deception. "Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ" (
Jude 3–4).
Notice that Jude warns of false teachers using the idea of "grace" as a vehicle for "licentiousness\—license to
disobey the very laws of God!
Let us understand that no one can ever
earn salvation—it is God's gift! The
true grace of God leads to the
gift of salvation (
Ephesians 2:8–10;
Romans 6:23). Those
willing to obey God (
Acts 5:29,
32) and who are under true grace will be God's "workmanship, created in Christ Jesus
for good works" (
Ephesians 2:10). God's grace does not eliminate the need for obedience and keeping God's commandments. The Apostle Paul warned that one could "receive the grace of God in vain" (
2 Corinthians 6:1). And while the Apostle Peter exhorted Christians to "rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ" (
1 Peter 1:13), he continues with the expectation that we do so "as
obedient children" (v. 14; cf. v. 2).
The 10 Commandments List in Exodus 20:2-17
1.“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me.
2.“You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
3.“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
4.“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
5.“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
6.“You shall not murder.
7.“You shall not commit adultery.
8.“You shall not steal.
9.“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
10.“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”
Matthew 22:36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”
37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
John 14:21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”
22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”
23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.
