Revelation includes all of the others, and many other kinds of impartation from God. A vision is a "picture" or "video" you see in your mind, but may "appear" to you and be visible to your natural eyes. A dream is what most people experience when they're asleep in REM state, but it may be from God. A trance is like a vision, but your other senses are suspended in the natural world.

the very word of God is the difference.

Revelation is only in the word of God from the Holy Spirit. Vision is birthed in a person to do the work of God and must be in line with the word of God. A dream is a desire to do or be warned or encouraged, also given by God and too must be in line with the word of God. Trance is being overcome by a power that takes over your thought process. It is not something we see as normative in the word of God

Revelation is literally "unveiling". For example, it was used to describe an artist revealing a sculpture. He worked behind a curtain until it was ready to be seen. He would raise the curtain and it was a "revelation". Revelation is God showing us what He has done. We can read the words in the Bible but they may mean little to us. Revelation makes them come alive.

Visions are something that you see while you are fully awake. A friend of mine had a vision of a city being destroyed, shortly before it was hit by a massive storm. He saw the city being picked up and thrown down. He was wide awake at the time. The city was Darwin, devastated over Christmas 1974.

Dreams happen while we are asleep. Most dreams are meaningless. Some are from God. I've had one dream from God for sure.

Trances are when you cease to be conscious of the physical realm or even yourself. I've had that experience once in 50 years. It's hard to describe, but I was in perfect peace and as if I was in heaven already.

We need to be careful. All these experiences can be counterfeited by Satan. Some have flashing thoughts that they think are God, but they are not. Some have "visions" which are simply from their own imaginations. Acting on a dream without confirming that it is of God is foolish. Many people involved in the occult, mediums, fortune tellers and so on, fall into trances. Obviously they are speaking from the pit of hell, not God.

Various differences, but, for me, these most often occur after I have dined at Taco Bell.....

(ok, back to seriousness)
