What is the greatest sin?

In Matthew 22, Jesus said that loving God with all of our heart, soul, and mind is the greatest commandment. Loving our neighbor as ourselves is the second greatest commandment.

Since these are the two greatest commandments, then is it true that the reverse of these commandments - failing to love God, our neighbor, or hating either- is the greatest sin of all?

I’d suggest that the greatest sin is rejecting the Person and finished work of Jesus Christ.

Pretty much this. I'd say something along the lines of failing to see the need for a savior and thus rejecting the grace offered to you through Jesus.

The greatest sin is the blaspheme of the Holy Spirit. It is the "unpardonable" sin, ergo, the greatest.

Pride

considering all sin. including the sin of unbelief, is rooted in the sin of pride.

Romans 1: 29 They were filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, covetousness, malice. Full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, craftiness, they are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, rebellious toward parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 They know God’s decree, that those who practice such things deserve to die—yet they not only do them but even applaud others who practice them.

I don't know of any Scripture that says what the greatest sin actually is: as such it is a question not directly answerable. Everything written here thus far I think sheds good light on the subject.

(1) All sin (any single sin) has the wages of death. So all sin is very, very, bad!

(2) The only unforgiveable sin is the sin of blaspheming against the Holy Spirit. So in some ways it would make sense to make this the "greatest sin." But just because this sin is unforgiveable does not mean it is the greatest.

(3) If the first commandment is to love God - then is the worst sin to hate/reject or not believe in Jesus and in God - that makes sense too.

The greatest sin is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit because it is a sin that cannot be forgiven. Unbelief can be forgiven because many people have been unbelievers and then later became believers. If unbelief was unforgivable, then anyone who at any time did not believe in Jesus could not then be saved. Nevertheless, Jesus clearly tells us that there is a sin that will not be forgiven in this age or the age to come.

We are allowed to repent from any sin other than the blaspheming of the Holy Spirit, and so me understand this latter to be in danger of eternal guilt as opposed to being also forgiveable in instances. On that only our Father knows.

As per the greatest laws, those of love, when we adhere to them we will obey any and all of the laws which comprise to form those laws. Not a brain-breaker, not at all.

As for fear and faith. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom, I posted this earlier, but I should elaborate.

Anyone who comes to the stage of fearing Gos already has faith from Him for we do not fear what we do not believe exists, right?

But how do you know if you've committed this sin ? I've always been concerned about this because i don't want to commit it, plus i've thought some mean things towards god and i hope he's not mad at me.

Just remember, pride is the root cause of this sin, so that would still make pride the greatest sin

Blasphemy of the spirit would be the sin of unbelief

he who does not believe is condemned already

rejecting the gospel, is to blaspheme the spirit, because your i effect dissenting from his trueth and replacing it with your own

OK thank goodness, so atheists are the ones committing this sin, its not thinking something mean or anything or occasional doubts, so as long as i continue to believe i should be fine, right ?

Some of what has been said comes from so many ways of looking at the word. In 1 John verse 23 says " and this is His commandment that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another just as He commanded us. People seem to forget that the Father turned everything over to the Son. There are two covenants there first between the Father and the chosen people and the second based on Christ's death on the cross for us. It also says that to break any commandment is the same as breaking all of the commandments. So Jesus took away the law and gave us Grace for one purpose to believe in Him and to learn how to really love the way He and the Father have loved.

Sadly, their are christians who commit this sin, they are christian in name only.

they believe Jesus, they just have no faith in him.

Honestly i just hope that Jesus takes me home. I try not to think about anything else just want to go home.

It is certain may have done the same, if you regret it, that is repentance, I believe.
As for knowing when having sinned, firsst of all you probably will but you are forgiven when yyou have come to our blessed Savior, however anything that proceeds from doubt may be considere4d a sin. Remember sinning is breaking the law. As we are freed from the condemnation of sin by Jesus on the Cross, we must try not to disobey what we truly know our Father wants us to do in action, thought and desires.

blasphemy or insulting the Holy Spirit

That is a no no. Its like biting the hands that feed you. Its even worse...more like beating up your own wife who you promised to love, when. she had done nothing but love and care for you.
